Il congiuntivo in inglese

Subjunctive

In breve

Il congiuntivo inglese usa soprattutto la forma base del verbo dopo proposte, richieste, ordini e giudizi di necessità: They insisted that he leave e It is essential that she be informed. Inoltre, were può riferirsi a qualunque persona nelle ipotesi irreali: If I were you.

Compare dopo verbi come suggest e demand, dopo espressioni come it is essential that... e in frasi quali come what may. Un secondo nucleo è were ipotetico, tradizionalmente chiamato congiuntivo passato: If she were here, she would know what to do.

I think it be true. Al contrario, dopo una richiesta formale l’inglese può usare una forma senza desinenza: Chiedo che lui vengaI request that he come.

Come funziona

Il congiuntivo prescrittivo: that + forma base

Elemento introduttivo Struttura Esempio
verbo di proposta o richiesta verbo + that + soggetto + forma base We recommend that she apply.
nome che esprime proposta o richiesta nome + that + soggetto + forma base Their request is that he remain silent.
giudizio di necessità o importanza It is + aggettivo + that + soggetto + forma base It is vital that everyone be ready.

Non si aggiunge la -s della terza persona singolare e il verbo be rimane be:

Soggetto Indicativo presente Congiuntivo prescrittivo
I / you / we / they attend attend
he / she / it attends attend
qualunque persona con be am / is / are be

La differenza si vede quindi soprattutto con he, she, it e con be: The doctor recommends that he rest; It is crucial that the data be accurate. Con altri soggetti, They demanded that we leave potrebbe sembrare un normale presente, ma la struttura e il significato mostrano che si tratta del congiuntivo.

Tra gli introduttori più comuni ci sono:

  • verbi: advise, ask, demand, insist, propose, recommend, request, require, suggest, urge;
  • nomi: advice, demand, proposal, recommendation, request, requirement, suggestion;
  • aggettivi: advisable, crucial, essential, important, necessary, urgent, vital.

  • She insisted that he apologize = pretese che si scusasse: azione richiesta, quindi congiuntivo;
  • She insisted that he was innocent = sostenne con forza che era innocente: affermazione su un fatto, quindi indicativo.

Negazione, passivo e forma compiuta

La negazione si mette prima della forma base, senza do: They requested that he not enter. Nel passivo si usa be + participio passato (la forma usata, per esempio, in written o informed): It is essential that the report be signed today.

Significato Struttura Esempio
affermativo that + soggetto + forma base I suggest that she wait.
negativo that + soggetto + not + forma base I suggest that she not wait.
passivo that + soggetto + be + participio passato They require that it be tested.
anteriore/compiuto that + soggetto + have + participio passato It is essential that she have completed the course.

Were nelle ipotesi irreali

Nelle situazioni immaginarie o contrarie ai fatti, were può essere usato con tutte le persone: I were, he were, she were. Si incontra soprattutto nelle proposizioni con if, dopo wish e dopo as if / as though.

Contesto Esempio Valore
ipotesi If I were you, I would wait. consiglio basato su una situazione impossibile
desiderio irreale I wish she were here. non è qui
apparenza non reale He acts as though he were the owner. non è il proprietario

Questo uso continua il periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo: if + forma passata, poi di solito would + forma base. Nel parlato informale si sente anche If I was you o I wish she was here. Were resta la scelta più sorvegliata e, nell’espressione If I were you, è nettamente preferibile.

Attenzione a non sostituire ogni was con were. Se la frase parla di un fatto passato considerato possibile o reale, si usa l’indicativo: If she was at the meeting, she heard the announcement significa “Se era alla riunione, ha sentito l’annuncio”. If she were at the meeting, she would object immagina invece una situazione non reale o improbabile.

Formule fisse

Vanno imparate come unità:

  • Long live... — “Lunga vita a...”;
  • God save... — “Dio salvi...”;
  • so be it — “e così sia”;
  • if need be — “se necessario”;
  • be that as it may — “comunque sia”;
  • come what may — “accada quel che accada”;
  • Heaven forbid! — “Non sia mai!”;
  • suffice it to say... — “basti dire...”.

Errori comuni

Aggiungere la -s della terza persona

  • Errato nel modello formale: It is essential that she attends.
  • Corretto: It is essential that she attend.

Coniugare be come all’indicativo

  • Errato: They requested that he is present at nine.
  • Corretto: They requested that he be present at nine.

Usare to dopo il soggetto

  • Errato: The doctor recommended that he to rest.
  • Corretto: The doctor recommended that he rest.

Costruire suggest come tell

  • Errato: She suggested me to call later.
  • Corretto: She suggested that I call later oppure She suggested calling later.

Usare would nella proposizione con if

  • Errato: If I would be you, I would refuse.
  • Corretto: If I were you, I would refuse.
  • Perché: nel normale periodo ipotetico irreale, would va nella conseguenza; la proposizione con if usa were o un’altra forma passata.

Mettere not con do

  • Errato: They insisted that he didn't leave the building. se si intende un ordine.
  • Corretto: They insisted that he not leave the building.

Note d’uso

We recommend that the applicant submit two references. Nell’inglese britannico è molto comune anche la costruzione con should: We recommend that the applicant should submit two references. Qui should non significa propriamente “dovrebbe” come consiglio debole; fa parte della proposizione prescrittiva. Entrambe le versioni sono standard.

Si può incontrare anche l’indicativo, per esempio It is important that everyone is ready, soprattutto quando si sottolinea uno stato reale più che un risultato desiderato. La scelta cambia quindi talvolta la prospettiva: It is important that everyone be ready presenta la prontezza come requisito; It is important that everyone is ready può affermare che il fatto di essere pronti è importante.

In inglese questi contesti richiedono spesso l’indicativo: I don't think he knows, I'm glad you're here, I doubt that it is true.

Nel parlato quotidiano, strutture alternative possono risultare più naturali: You should leave now invece di I suggest that you leave now; We need everyone to be ready invece di It is essential that everyone be ready.

Inversione senza if

In uno stile formale, were può precedere il soggetto e sostituire if:

  • Were I to refuse, what would happen? = If I were to refuse...
  • Were she here, she would support us. = If she were here...

La struttura were + soggetto + to + verbo presenta un’eventualità remota o puramente ipotetica.

Congiuntivo concessivo

Costruzioni come whether it be true or not e be it large or small significano rispettivamente “che sia vero o no” e “grande o piccolo che sia”.

  • Every application will be reviewed, be it complete or incomplete.
  • Whether it be luck or skill, the result is impressive.

Oggi queste forme hanno un registro elevato. Le alternative quotidiane sono whether it is true or not e whether it is large or small.

Formule, retorica e lingua giuridica

Espressioni come so be it restano comuni perché funzionano come blocchi lessicali. Altre, per esempio Be it known that..., appartengono a proclamazioni o documenti dal tono giuridico e conducono verso l’inglese arcaico e giuridico.

Alcuni riservano subjunctive alla forma base prescrittiva e chiamano were irrealis were, cioè were dell’irrealtà.

  1. Trasforma frasi comuni in stile formale. Parti da Everyone must sign the form e riscrivi They require that everyone sign the form. Alterna affermativo, negativo e passivo.
  2. Crea coppie realtà/ipotesi. Confronta If she was there, she saw it con If she were there, she would help.
  3. Ascolta la variante geografica. In notiziari, riunioni o podcast annota se senti forma base, should oppure indicativo dopo recommend, insist e essential.
