Formal Written Register in Persian

In Brief

Formal written Persian is not a separate language, but it differs noticeably from everyday speech in its verb forms, vocabulary, sentence structure, and linking expressions. It preserves forms such as است, می‌شود, and را, favors carefully organized noun phrases and compound verbs, and avoids conversational contractions such as ـه, می‌شه, and رو. The most effective formal prose is precise and appropriately formal—not simply packed with difficult Arabic-derived words.

Overview

At C1, reading Persian means moving comfortably between conversation, journalism, essays, institutional websites, academic writing, and official correspondence. All use the same basic grammar, but they make different stylistic choices. A friend might say این موضوع خیلی مهمه (“this issue is very important”), while a report is more likely to state این موضوع از اهمیت بسیاری برخوردار است (“this issue is of considerable importance”). The second version uses an explicit copula, a formal compound verb, and a more abstract noun phrase.

“Formal written Persian” covers a range rather than one fixed style. A clear newspaper report, a research article, and a government letter are all formal, but only the last may use highly bureaucratic formulas such as جهت استحضار (“for your information”). Learning the register therefore involves two skills: recognizing formal forms and choosing a level of formality that suits the text.

The contrast with English is partly familiar: English also distinguishes “kids” from “children,” or “find out” from “determine.” Persian, however, marks the contrast more consistently in common verb forms and grammatical words. A sentence can sound conversational even when every word is technically correct, simply because it contains می‌خواد, واسه, or رو instead of their written counterparts.

How It Works

Preserve written grammatical forms

The clearest differences appear in high-frequency words. In careful writing, use the full written form rather than spelling pronunciation.

Function Formal written Persian Conversational form Meaning
copula, third-person singular است ـه is
“becomes/is done” می‌شود می‌شه becomes; is done
“can” می‌تواند می‌تونه can
“wants” می‌خواهد می‌خواد wants
object marker را رو marks a specific direct object
“for” برای واسه for
“if” اگر اگه if

The copula (a linking verb meaning “be”) is often attached as ـه in speech: هوا سرده. Formal prose writes هوا سرد است. Likewise, the present prefix می‌ـ is written with a half-space: می‌شود, not میشود. A half-space joins the parts visually without using a normal full space.

Formal Persian commonly omits personal pronouns when the verb ending already identifies the subject, just as neutral Persian does. بررسی خواهیم کرد means “we will examine”; adding ما is useful only when “we” is being contrasted or emphasized.

Build precise noun phrases with ezafe

Ezafe is the unstressed linking sound -e (after most consonants) or -ye (after vowels) that connects a noun to a following modifier or possessor. It is usually not shown in ordinary Persian script, but it must be supplied while reading:

  • نتایجِ پژوهشnatāyej-e pazhuhesh — the results of the research
  • نتایجِ نهاییِ پژوهشnatāyej-e nahāyi-ye pazhuhesh — the final results of the research
  • نتایجِ نهاییِ پژوهشِ دانشگاه — the final results of the university’s research

Formal prose often contains several ezafe links because it compresses information into a noun phrase (a noun together with the words that describe or identify it). Read such a chain from its head noun, usually the first item, and add one modifier at a time:

بررسیِ دقیقِ پیامدهایِ اقتصادیِ اجرایِ طرح
“the careful examination of the economic consequences of implementing the plan”

The phrase is grammatical, but length alone is not a virtue. If readers must hold too many relationships in mind, divide the phrase or turn part of it into a clause. Clear formal Persian is better than an overloaded chain.

Prefer established formal vocabulary and compound verbs

Persian formal vocabulary includes many Arabic-derived nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. These are fully integrated Persian words, not pieces of Arabic grammar. Common examples include نتیجه (result), اقدام (action), شرایط (conditions), مربوط (related), and ضروری (necessary).

Many combine with a Persian light verb—a common verb such as کردن, شدن, دادن, or یافتن—to form a compound verb:

More everyday wording Formal alternative Meaning
نگاه کردن به مورد بررسی قرار دادن / بررسی کردن to examine
گفتن بیان کردن / اظهار داشتن to state
شروع شدن آغاز شدن to begin
بیشتر شدن افزایش یافتن to increase
انجام دادن اجرا کردن to carry out, implement
خبر دادن اطلاع دادن to inform

These alternatives are not always interchangeable. اظهار داشتن suits statements and views, while اعلام کردن often means making something public or official. Learn the whole combination, not just the abstract noun.

Organize relations with formal connectors

Formal writing makes the relation between sentences explicit. Connectors help the reader follow cause, contrast, addition, inference, or reformulation.

Relation Persian connector Natural English equivalent
basis/source بر اساس، بنا بر based on; according to
cause از آنجا که، با توجه به اینکه since; given that
result بنابراین، از این رو، در نتیجه therefore; as a result
contrast با این حال، در حالی که however; whereas
addition افزون بر این، همچنین moreover; also
reformulation به عبارت دیگر in other words
example برای مثال، از جمله for example; including
conclusion در مجموع، در پایان overall; in conclusion

English writers sometimes insert “however” almost anywhere. Persian connectors also have syntactic preferences. در حالی که introduces a clause with a verb, whereas با وجودِ normally introduces a noun phrase: با وجودِ محدودیت‌ها (“despite the limitations”).

Use impersonal and passive forms selectively

Formal Persian often reduces the visibility of the writer or actor:

  • می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که… — One can conclude that…
  • انتظار می‌رود که… — It is expected that…
  • گزارش منتشر شد. — The report was published.
  • این موضوع بررسی خواهد شد. — This matter will be examined.

A passive construction presents the receiver of an action as the grammatical subject: in گزارش منتشر شد, the report receives the action. Persian commonly forms passives with a past participle (a verb form such as منتشرشده, “published”) plus شدن. Yet Persian often prefers an active sentence when the actor is known: وزارت گزارش را منتشر کرد is usually clearer than گزارش توسط وزارت منتشر شد. Do not reproduce every English “by” passive with توسط.

Use participial modifiers to compress information

A past participle can modify a noun, often with ezafe:

  • گزارش‌هایِ منتشرشده — the published reports
  • تصمیمِ اتخاذشده — the decision taken
  • اطلاعاتِ ارائه‌شده در جدول — the information presented in the table

The participle is built from the past stem plus ـه, and in compounds it is commonly written joined or with the appropriate half-space: منتشرشده, ارائه‌شده. Such modifiers are efficient, but several in one sentence can make prose heavy.

Recognize formal sentence frames

A few frames occur frequently enough to learn as units:

  • لازم به ذکر است که… — It is worth mentioning that…
  • شایان توجه است که… — It is noteworthy that…
  • با توجه به …، … — Given/In view of …, …
  • هدف از این گزارش، بررسیِ … است. — The aim of this report is to examine…
  • این امر نشان می‌دهد که… — This indicates that…
  • بدین منظور، … — For this purpose, …

These frames can guide a text, but repeated formulas weaken it. Often a direct statement is stronger than announcing that something is “worth mentioning.”

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
بر اساس گزارش‌های منتشرشده، میزان مصرف کاهش یافته است. Based on published reports, consumption has decreased. Source phrase plus a formal perfect form
لازم به ذکر است که این آمار هنوز نهایی نیست. It is worth mentioning that these figures are not yet final. Common framing expression
نتایج نهایی پژوهش در ماه آینده منتشر خواهد شد. The final results of the study will be published next month. Ezafe chain and future passive
با توجه به محدودیت‌های موجود، اجرای طرح به تعویق افتاد. Given the existing limitations, implementation of the plan was postponed. Cause/background before the main clause
این یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد که سیاست مذکور مؤثر بوده است. These findings indicate that the aforementioned policy has been effective. مذکور is formal and document-like
از این رو می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که اصلاح روش ضروری است. Therefore, one can conclude that revising the method is necessary. Impersonal academic conclusion
وزارت مربوطه اقدامات لازم را انجام خواهد داد. The relevant ministry will take the necessary measures. Institutional collocation
با وجود افزایش هزینه‌ها، کیفیت خدمات حفظ شده است. Despite the rise in costs, service quality has been maintained. با وجود takes a noun phrase
پیشنهادهای ارائه‌شده در جلسه مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. The proposals presented at the meeting were reviewed. Participial modifier and formal compound passive
در حالی که مرحله نخست پایان یافته است، مرحله دوم همچنان ادامه دارد. While the first phase has ended, the second phase is still continuing. Contrast between two clauses
مراتب فوق جهت استحضار ایفاد می‌گردد. The above is submitted for your information. Highly bureaucratic correspondence, not general formal prose
با عنایت به مراتب فوق‌الذکر، دستور مقتضی صادر فرمایید. In consideration of the above, please issue the appropriate instruction. Very deferential administrative formula

Common Mistakes

Writing spoken forms in a formal text

  • Wrong: این گزارش نشون می‌ده که هزینه‌ها زیاد شده.
  • Right: این گزارش نشان می‌دهد که هزینه‌ها افزایش یافته است.
  • Why: نشون می‌ده and the reduced ending in شده reflect speech. The correction uses written forms and formal vocabulary. In a personal message, the original may be perfectly natural.

Assuming “formal” means “as Arabic-derived as possible”

  • Wrong: مبادرت به انجام بررسی در خصوص موضوع نمودیم.
  • Better: موضوع را بررسی کردیم.
  • Why: The first sentence is grammatically possible but inflated: several abstract expressions replace one clear verb. Formal writing should match its setting and remain readable.

Copying an English passive

  • Awkward: تصمیم توسط کمیته گرفته شد.
  • Better: کمیته تصمیم گرفت.
  • Why: When the actor matters and is known, Persian often favors the active. Use a passive when the result or affected item deserves focus, not merely because English uses one.

Losing track of ezafe in a long chain

  • Problematic reading: treating بررسی نتایج نهایی پژوهش as separate, unconnected words
  • Correct reading: بررسیِ نتایجِ نهاییِ پژوهش
  • Why: Ezafe is mostly invisible in the script. Identify the first noun, then attach each following modifier. When writing, restructure chains that could be understood in more than one way.

Mixing levels of register without a purpose

  • Awkward: با عنایت به موارد بالا، یه تصمیم خوب می‌گیریم.
  • Better formal version: با توجه به موارد فوق، تصمیم مناسبی اتخاذ خواهد شد.
  • Why: Bureaucratic با عنایت به clashes with conversational یه. Intentional mixing can be humorous, but accidental mixing sounds uncontrolled.

Treating every connector as interchangeable

  • Wrong: با وجود اینکه محدودیت‌ها، طرح اجرا شد.
  • Right: با وجود محدودیت‌ها، طرح اجرا شد. / با وجود اینکه محدودیت‌هایی وجود داشت، طرح اجرا شد.
  • Why: با وجود takes a noun phrase; با وجود اینکه introduces a full clause containing a verb.

Usage Notes

Neutral formal prose and bureaucratic prose should not be confused. بر اساس, با توجه به, and بررسی کردن are normal across educated writing. By contrast, مراتب فوق, جهت استحضار, ایفاد می‌گردد, and دستور مقتضی صادر فرمایید belong especially to administrative correspondence. They are valuable for comprehension, but can sound pompous in an essay, email, or news report.

نمودن sometimes replaces کردن in institutional language: اعلام نمود beside اعلام کرد. The کردن version is fully formal and often plainer. Similarly, می‌باشد is common in bureaucratic texts as an alternative to است, but many editors prefer است unless there is a specific reason for the heavier form. Do not assume that a longer verb is more correct.

Punctuation helps formal Persian remain readable. Modern Persian uses the Persian comma ، and question mark ؟. A comma often follows an opening frame such as با توجه به شواهد، but punctuation does not replace grammatical linking. Also preserve standard spacing and half-spacing in forms such as می‌تواند, گزارش‌ها, and ارائه‌شده.

The register varies across genres and institutions, and usage is not identical everywhere in the Persian-speaking world. Iranian official formulas may not be the preferred institutional wording in Afghanistan or Tajikistan. When producing a real document, follow strong models from the relevant country and organization rather than treating one bureaucratic style as universal Persian.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Strong formal writing controls information flow: it starts from what the reader already knows and ends with the important new point. Persian demonstrative expressions such as این موضوع, این امر, این رویکرد, and موارد یادشده can refer back to an earlier sentence. Used carefully, they create cohesion; used too often, they make it unclear what “this matter” means.

Writers also manage certainty through hedging—language that makes a claim appropriately cautious rather than absolute:

Strength Persian English
cautious به نظر می‌رسد که… It appears that…
evidence-based possibility می‌توان گفت که… It can be said that…
inference احتمالاً… / ظاهراً… probably / apparently
stronger conclusion شواهد نشان می‌دهد که… The evidence indicates that…
firm assertion بدون تردید… undoubtedly…

Hedging is not vagueness when it reflects the evidence. Academic and policy writing often needs به نظر می‌رسد or می‌توان نتیجه گرفت, while a regulation may require direct obligations such as متقاضی موظف است… (“the applicant is required to…”).

Nominalization—expressing an action through a noun—also raises formality: بررسیِ داده‌ها (“the examination of the data”) beside داده‌ها را بررسی کردن (“to examine the data”). It is useful in headings and dense argument, but too many abstract nouns hide who did what. Alternate noun phrases with clear finite verbs (verbs marked for tense and person) to keep the text moving.

Finally, translation requires restraint. English phrases such as “with regard to,” “in accordance with,” and “it should be noted that” have Persian counterparts, but a polished Persian sentence may be shorter than its English source. Translate the function of the sentence, not each formal-looking word.

Practice Tips

  1. Rewrite one message at three levels. Express the same content as a text to a friend, a neutral professional email, and an official notice. Check است/ـه, را/رو, connectors, and vocabulary.
  2. Mark ezafe while reading. Copy a sentence from a reliable newspaper or university site and add a small kasra mentally or on paper after every linked noun. Then paraphrase long chains as clauses.
  3. Build a collocation notebook. Record complete combinations such as اقدام کردن, مورد بررسی قرار گرفتن, نتیجه گرفتن, and اطلاع دادن, each with its typical subject and object. Learning isolated “formal words” is less useful than learning the patterns they enter.
