Academic and Scholarly Persian

فارسی دانشگاهی و پژوهشی

This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

Academic Persian is a specialized register used in theses, research papers, university lectures, and scholarly discourse. At the C1 level, understanding this register is necessary for anyone engaging with Persian-language scholarship. It features hedging strategies, argument connectors, citation formulas, and a high density of Arabic-origin technical vocabulary.

Academic writing in Persian follows conventions similar to Western academic writing but with culturally specific features: greater use of passive voice, more elaborate politeness in acknowledging other scholars, and specific connectors that signal logical relationships.

Common Mistakes

Using conversational hedging in academic writing

  • Wrong: یه جورایی فکر می‌کنم... (I kinda think...)
  • Right: به نظر می‌رسد که... (It appears that...)
  • Why: Academic hedging uses formal expressions, not colloquial vagueness.

Neglecting logical connectors

  • Wrong: Writing arguments without explicit connectors
  • Right: Using بنابراین, از این رو, در نتیجه to signal logical flow
  • Why: Academic writing requires explicit signaling of logical relationships.

Practice Tips

  1. Read Persian academic abstracts from journals (many available through SID and Magiran databases) and highlight connectors and hedging expressions.
  2. Practice writing short paragraphs using academic connectors: state a claim, support it, and draw a conclusion using بر اساس..., از این رو..., در نتیجه...
  3. Build an academic phrase bank organized by function: introducing, comparing, concluding, hedging.
