News and Media Register in Persian

زبان رسانه و خبر

This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Persian journalism uses a recognizable set of reporting formulas, formal compound verbs, compact noun phrases, and impersonal or passive constructions. Headlines often omit words that a full sentence would require, while the body of a report carefully marks who supplied a claim: به گزارش... “according to the report of...,” اعلام کرد “announced,” or گفته می‌شود “it is said.” Learning these patterns helps you separate the journalist’s voice from quoted information.

Overview

The Persian news and media register, زبان رسانه و خبر, is the style used in news reports, broadcasts, press releases, interviews, and much online journalism. It is neither everyday conversation nor literary prose. It builds on formal written Persian but has its own priorities: identifying sources, condensing information, presenting events as current, and maintaining an appearance of distance from disputed claims.

At C1, the challenge is not usually understanding individual verb forms. It is recognizing how familiar grammar is packaged differently. A report may place a long source phrase before the main statement, choose a formal compound verb where conversation would use a simpler one, or suppress the agent (the person or organization carrying out an action). Headlines compress this style even further.

English-language news offers some useful parallels—“according to,” “officials said,” and agentless passives—but the correspondence is not exact. Persian relies heavily on compound verbs such as اعلام کردن and تأکید کردن, and it frequently places the reporting verb after a long quotation or که clause. Do not translate every English news formula word for word; learn the Persian expression as a reusable unit.

How It Works

1. Attribution: showing where information comes from

An attribution identifies the source of a statement. This matters because reporting a claim is not the same as endorsing it.

Pattern Literal structure Typical function
به گزارشِ + source by/according to the report of Introduces a report or news source
بر اساسِ + noun on the basis of Cites data, documents, or findings
بنا به + noun according to Formal attribution, often before statements or evidence
به گفتهٔ + person/group according to what ... said Attributes a claim to a speaker
به نقل از + source quoting/from the account of Marks an intermediate quoted source
طبقِ + noun according to/in accordance with Refers to a report, rule, statistics, or announcement

The small linking sound called ezafe (the unstressed -e that connects Persian nouns and modifiers) is essential in phrases such as به گزارشِ خبرنگار and به گفتهٔ وزیر. It may not be visibly marked in ordinary Persian script, but it must be pronounced.

A source phrase can open the sentence:

به گزارش خبرگزاری مهر، مذاکرات فردا ادامه می‌یابد.
“According to Mehr News Agency, the negotiations will continue tomorrow.”

Persian normally places a comma after a long opening attribution. In speech, a newsreader signals the same boundary with a short pause.

2. Reporting verbs and the که clause

News reports frequently combine a named speaker with a formal reporting verb and a clause introduced by که “that.” A clause is simply a group of words containing its own statement.

وزیر اعلام کرد که محدودیت‌ها کاهش خواهد یافت.
“The minister announced that the restrictions would be reduced.”

Common reporting verbs are usually compound verbs: a noun or adjective plus a light verb such as کردن “to do” or شدن “to become.”

Persian verb Normal news meaning Typical nuance
اعلام کردن to announce Publicly makes information known
اظهار کردن / اظهار داشتن to state Formal, neutral reporting
تأکید کردن to emphasize Highlights insistence or importance
افزودن to add Introduces the speaker’s next point
خاطرنشان کردن to point out Formal emphasis or reminder
تکذیب کردن to deny Says a report or claim is untrue
تأیید کردن to confirm Says information is correct
هشدار دادن to warn Signals danger or an adverse outcome
گزارش دادن to report Supplies an account of an event

The verbs گفت “said” and افزود “added” are not informal; they are standard journalistic verbs. Good news prose often alternates them with more specific verbs rather than repeating a heavy formal expression in every sentence.

Persian does not require the systematic backshift found in some accounts of English reported speech. After a past reporting verb, the tense inside the که clause is chosen for the actual time and viewpoint intended:

  • او گفت که آماده است. — “He/She said that he/she is ready.”
  • او گفت که آماده بود. — “He/She said that he/she was ready.”
  • او گفت که فردا خواهد آمد. — “He/She said that he/she would come tomorrow.”

3. Passive and agentless reporting

The passive voice presents the affected thing as the subject rather than naming the doer. In Persian it is commonly built with a past participle (a verb form such as اجراشده “implemented”) and شدن:

طرح اجرا شد. — “The plan was implemented.”

In media writing, the passive may keep attention on the event, avoid an obvious or unknown agent, or create institutional distance:

  • نتایج منتشر شد. — “The results were published.”
  • دو نفر بازداشت شدند. — “Two people were arrested.”
  • اعلام شده است که... — “It has been announced that...”

Not every English passive should become a Persian passive. Persian often prefers an active sentence with an institutional subject, or an impersonal third-person-plural verb when the agent is understood:

  • وزارت بهداشت نتایج را منتشر کرد. — “The Ministry of Health published the results.”
  • می‌گویند جاده بسته است. — “They say the road is closed.”

The formula گفته می‌شود که... “it is said/reported that...” is especially useful when the source is unspecified. Because it weakens source transparency, careful readers should notice what evidence is—and is not—being supplied.

4. Planned and expected events

قرار است + subjunctive is a standard way to report an arrangement or expected plan. The subjunctive is a verb form used here for a projected, not-yet-realized event.

قرار است نشست ساعت ده آغاز شود.
“The meeting is scheduled to begin at ten.”

With a passive, the same frame focuses on what is due to happen to something:

قرار است این طرح اجرا شود.
“This plan is to be implemented.”

Compare طرح اجرا خواهد شد, which makes a straightforward future prediction (“the plan will be implemented”), with قرار است طرح اجرا شود, which points to a schedule, intention, or reported arrangement. Neither wording guarantees that the event will actually happen.

Other common frames include انتظار می‌رود که... “it is expected that...” and پیش‌بینی می‌شود که... “it is predicted that....” Both normally take a following clause and let the writer avoid naming a particular predictor.

5. Headline compression

Persian headlines are not always complete sentences. They commonly remove the linking verb است “is,” articles that English would need, predictable reporting material, or other recoverable words. This is ellipsis: leaving out material the reader can reconstruct.

Headline pattern Expanded reading Effect
افزایش قیمت نفت قیمت نفت افزایش یافت Event packaged as a noun phrase: “rise in oil prices”
آغاز مذاکرات در تهران مذاکرات در تهران آغاز شد Omits the finite verb: “talks begin in Tehran”
وزیر اقتصاد: تورم کاهش می‌یابد وزیر اقتصاد گفت که تورم کاهش می‌یابد Colon replaces a reporting frame
تصویب طرح جدید مجلس طرح جدید مجلس تصویب شد Dense noun phrase; context resolves relations

Headlines may use a present-tense verb for a recent or developing event, but practices vary by outlet and format. Do not treat every headline as a model for full prose. Restore omitted verbs and relationships before trying to imitate the construction.

A colon after a name or institution commonly means “X said/announced:” rather than possession. For example, سخنگوی دولت: تصمیم نهایی نشده است means “Government spokesperson: No final decision has been made.”

6. Formal vocabulary and dense noun phrases

News Persian favors formal items such as در پیِ “following/as a result of,” در خصوصِ “regarding,” همزمان با “at the same time as,” and با اشاره به “referring to.” It also packs information into ezafe chains:

سخنگوی وزارت امور خارجه
“the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”

Read a long chain from its first main noun, then attach each following element. Here سخنگوی is the head: a spokesperson; وزارت امور خارجه specifies the institution. English often rearranges the same information with “of,” possessives, or noun modifiers.

Formal does not automatically mean better. Expressions such as در رابطه با and در خصوص may be common, but a shorter دربارهٔ can be clearer. Reliable journalism balances institutional convention with readability.

Common Mistakes

Translating “according to” with one fixed phrase

  • Wrong: به گزارش قانون، ورود ممنوع است.
  • Right: طبق قانون، ورود ممنوع است.
  • Why: به گزارش normally introduces a report or reporting source. A law is a basis or authority, so طبق قانون “according to the law” fits better.

Using a headline fragment as an ordinary sentence

  • Wrong in body prose: آغاز مذاکرات در تهران.
  • Right: مذاکرات در تهران آغاز شد.
  • Why: The fragment is acceptable as a headline, but normal report prose needs a finite verb (a verb marked for tense/person).

Treating قرار است as a certainty

  • Wrong interpretation: قرار است طرح اجرا شود = “The plan definitely will be implemented.”
  • Right interpretation: “The plan is scheduled/intended to be implemented.”
  • Why: The expression reports an arrangement or expectation, not a guaranteed outcome.

Overusing the passive

  • Awkward: توسط وزارت بهداشت نتایج منتشر شد.
  • Better: وزارت بهداشت نتایج را منتشر کرد.
  • Also natural when the agent is irrelevant: نتایج منتشر شد.
  • Why: A Persian passive with توسط “by” is possible, but an active institutional subject is often clearer when the agent matters.

Confusing گفت and اعلام کرد

  • Poor choice: او در گفت‌وگوی خصوصی اعلام کرد که خسته است.
  • Better: او در گفت‌وگوی خصوصی گفت که خسته است.
  • Why: اعلام کردن suggests making information public or official. Ordinary گفتن is more natural for a private remark.

Omitting the source while sounding certain

  • Weak: گفته می‌شود که این دارو مؤثر است.
  • Better when known: پژوهشگران این دانشگاه گزارش داده‌اند که این دارو مؤثر است.
  • Why: گفته می‌شود is grammatically correct, but it hides the source. In factual reporting, name the evidence provider when available.

Usage Notes

Written reports commonly use وی for “he/she,” especially after a person has already been named. In ordinary speech, او is much more natural. Many contemporary outlets also prefer او, so وی is a register marker, not a grammatical requirement. Both pronouns are gender-neutral.

Broadcast language sits between written and spoken styles. A presenter may read carefully structured formal sentences, while an interviewee answers in conversational Persian. Listen for switches such as formal می‌خواهد versus colloquial می‌خواد, or را versus spoken رو. Quoted speech may preserve conversational forms, but the reporter’s framing usually remains standard.

News texts frequently use the Persian calendar, local institutional titles, and outlet-specific punctuation. They also differ editorially: state media, international Persian-language services, newspapers, and social media channels may choose different labels for the same people or events. Vocabulary can frame a story. At C1, ask not only “What does this word mean?” but also “Who chose this label, and what stance does it imply?”

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Attribution creates degrees of commitment

Compare these versions:

  1. این حادثه رخ داده است. — “This incident has occurred.”
  2. پلیس اعلام کرد که این حادثه رخ داده است. — “Police announced that the incident occurred.”
  3. گفته می‌شود که این حادثه رخ داده است. — “It is said that the incident occurred.”
  4. منابع تأییدنشده مدعی‌اند که این حادثه رخ داده است. — “Unconfirmed sources claim that the incident occurred.”

The event clause is similar, but the writer’s commitment changes. اعلام کرد attributes the statement; گفته می‌شود leaves the source vague; مدعی است “claims” can signal distance or doubt. These choices are part of pragmatics—the way wording conveys attitude and context—not merely vocabulary.

Participles compress background information

News prose often uses participial modifiers, forms derived from verbs that describe nouns:

  • گزارش منتشرشده — “the published report”
  • افراد بازداشت‌شده — “the detained people”
  • خسارت‌های واردشده — “the damage caused”

They condense what could be a relative clause: گزارشی که منتشر شده است “a report that has been published.” This compression is efficient, but too many stacked modifiers make a sentence hard to process. When reading, expand them mentally into full clauses.

Nominal style versus verbal style

A nominal style packages actions as nouns: بررسی موضوع “the examination of the issue,” اجرای طرح “implementation of the plan,” افزایش قیمت‌ها “the increase in prices.” Headlines and official statements use this heavily. In full prose, a verbal sentence—موضوع بررسی شد “the issue was examined”—often makes time and participants clearer.

Quotation is not neutral copying

Direct quotation reproduces words inside quotation marks, while indirect quotation integrates the statement after که. Editors may shorten a quote, select one clause for a headline, or paraphrase it. Check whether a striking headline phrase is a direct quotation, an indirect report, or the outlet’s own wording. This distinction is essential for advanced reading comprehension.

Practice Tips

  1. Annotate one short report. Underline source phrases once, reporting verbs twice, and passive verbs with a dotted line. Then identify which claims belong to the reporter and which belong to a source.
  2. Expand five headlines. Add omitted verbs, subjects, and reporting frames to turn each headline into a complete sentence. Then compare your version with the opening paragraph.
  3. Build formula cards, not isolated-word cards. Learn به گزارشِ...، تأکید کرد که... and قرار است... شود as frames. Replace the nouns and clauses with material from current reports.
