Academic and Scholarly Persian

فارسی دانشگاهی و پژوهشی

This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Academic Persian presents claims as parts of a reasoned argument: it states a research question, relates evidence to earlier work, and marks how strongly a conclusion is supported. Typical signals include بر اساس “based on,” از این رو “therefore,” به عبارت دیگر “in other words,” and cautious impersonal patterns such as می‌توان گفت که “one can say that.”

Overview

Academic and scholarly Persian (فارسی دانشگاهی و پژوهشی) is the register used in journal articles, theses, dissertations, research reports, and much university teaching. At C1, the challenge is not merely knowing formal vocabulary. You need to show the relationship between ideas: whether one sentence supplies evidence, gives a reason, introduces a contrast, reformulates a claim, or limits its certainty.

This register builds on Formal Written Register. It generally favors written forms such as می‌شود over conversational میشه, complete clause structure, precise technical terms, and carefully organized paragraphs. It also uses nominalization (expressing an action as a noun, such as “analysis” instead of “analyze”) more often than everyday speech: بررسی داده‌ها “the examination of the data,” افزایش نرخ “the increase in the rate.”

For an English-speaking learner, many discourse functions are familiar, but word-for-word translation is risky. English “according to,” “therefore,” and “it seems” each have several Persian equivalents whose grammar and strength differ. Good Persian academic prose is not simply English syntax filled with Persian words; it relies on established Persian combinations, especially noun phrases joined by ezafe (the linking sound -e/-ye) and light verbs such as انجام دادن “to carry out.”

How It Works

Build a research text by function

A Persian research text commonly moves through recognizable functions rather than one fixed template:

  1. Define the subject or problem: پژوهش حاضر به بررسیِ ... می‌پردازد “The present study examines ...”
  2. State an aim or question: هدف این پژوهش، تعیینِ ... است “The aim of this study is to determine ...”
  3. Describe method or material: داده‌ها با استفاده از ... گردآوری شدند “The data were collected using ...”
  4. Report findings: یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهند که ... “The findings show that ...”
  5. Interpret the result: این نتیجه را می‌توان ناشی از ... دانست “This result can be attributed to ...”
  6. Qualify and conclude: با توجه به محدودیت‌ها، به نظر می‌رسد که ... “Given the limitations, it appears that ...”

The verb پرداختن به means “to address/examine” and takes به: این مقاله به بررسی رابطهٔ میان دو متغیر می‌پردازد. In formal typography, both رابطهٔ and رابطۀ may represent rābete-ye; follow the publication’s house style consistently.

Organize the argument with connectors

A connector does more than make prose sound formal: it tells the reader how to interpret the next statement.

Persian form Typical meaning Function and caution
زیرا / چراکه because, since Introduces a reason; زیرا is especially common in formal prose.
بنابراین / از این رو therefore, thus Introduces a conclusion or consequence supported by what precedes it.
در نتیجه as a result, consequently Often emphasizes an outcome; it can be logical or empirical.
با این حال nevertheless, however Concedes the previous point, then contrasts with it.
در مقابل by contrast Sets two cases, views, or results against each other.
به عبارت دیگر in other words Reformulates the same idea; it should not introduce unrelated evidence.
افزون بر این / علاوه بر این furthermore, in addition Adds a supporting point.
از یک سو ... از سوی دیگر ... on the one hand ... on the other ... Balances two aspects of an issue.
در حالی که whereas; while Introduces contrast or simultaneity, according to context.
در مجموع overall Summarizes several observations without necessarily claiming proof.

Persian permits a connector before a full sentence, often followed by a comma: با این حال، نتایج قطعی نیستند. Do not scatter connectors merely for decoration. The logical relation must really be present.

Attribute sources and evidence

Citation language separates the author’s own claim from information attributed to another source. بر اساس means “on the basis of” and suits evidence, findings, documents, or criteria. به باورِ and از نظرِ attribute a view. به گفتهٔ introduces what a person or source has said. مطابق با means “in accordance with,” often for a model, rule, or result.

Persian pattern English use What follows
بر اساس یافته‌های پژوهش، ... Based on the research findings, ... Evidence or a basis
مطابق با الگوی پیشنهادیِ ...، ... In accordance with the model proposed by ..., ... A framework or model
به باورِ نویسنده، ... In the author’s view, ... A person or author
به گفتهٔ رضایی (۱۴۰۲)، ... According to Rezaei (1402), ... Reported wording or position
چنان‌که احمدی نشان می‌دهد، ... As Ahmadi demonstrates, ... A clause summarizing a source’s contribution
برای نمونه، حسینی (۱۳۹۹) ... For example, Hosseini (1399) ... An illustrative study

Exact citation punctuation and whether dates appear in the Solar Hijri or Gregorian calendar depend on the journal or institution. For a direct quotation, give the page in the format required by that style guide; do not invent one universal Persian citation format.

Control the strength of a claim

Academic hedging means deliberately limiting a claim so that it matches the evidence. Persian often does this with impersonal modal constructions: no individual researcher is foregrounded, and the statement remains open to evaluation.

Pattern Approximate force Example use
ممکن است ... may; it is possible that Marks possibility
احتمالاً ... probably Signals a probable interpretation
به نظر می‌رسد که ... it appears that ... Cautious inference from evidence
می‌توان گفت که ... one can say that ... Presents a defensible interpretation
می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که ... one can conclude that ... Stronger: presents an inference as supported
تا حدی ... to some extent Limits scope or degree
لزوماً ... نیست is not necessarily ... Rejects an automatic inference

The construction می‌توان + past stem is an impersonal modal pattern: می‌توان گفت، بررسی کرد، نتیجه گرفت. The verb after می‌توان does not receive میـ or a personal ending. Compare پژوهشگران می‌توانند نتیجه بگیرند “researchers can conclude,” where the named plural subject requires می‌توانند.

Hedging is not vagueness. شاید “perhaps” can be appropriate, but repeated unsupported شاید sounds speculative. Tie caution to its reason: با توجه به حجم محدود نمونه، نمی‌توان این نتیجه را به کل جامعه تعمیم داد “Given the limited sample size, this result cannot be generalized to the entire population.”

Package information formally

Academic Persian frequently uses long noun phrases linked by ezafe:

نتایجِ تحلیلِ آماریِ داده‌هایِ گردآوری‌شده
“the results of the statistical analysis of the collected data”

The head—the main noun—is نتایج; each following element narrows it. Such chains are useful, but excessive chains burden the reader. A clause can be clearer:

  • Dense: بررسیِ امکانِ اجرایِ طرحِ پیشنهادیِ پژوهشگران
  • Clearer in context: بررسی اینکه آیا می‌توان طرح پیشنهادی پژوهشگران را اجرا کرد

Formal prose also uses passive and result-focused forms when the procedure matters more than the agent: داده‌ها گردآوری و تحلیل شدند “The data were collected and analyzed.” Persian does not require passive voice everywhere. If the actor matters, an active sentence is often clearer: پژوهشگران داده‌ها را تحلیل کردند.

Make reference links explicit

Words such as این “this” and آن “that” can refer back to a result, claim, process, or entire sentence. Add a summarizing noun to remove ambiguity:

  • Vague: این نشان می‌دهد که ... “This shows that ...”
  • Clearer: این یافته نشان می‌دهد که ... “This finding shows that ...”
  • Clearer: این تفاوت را می‌توان ناشی از ... دانست “This difference can be attributed to ...”

This pattern is especially valuable after a long paragraph, where bare English “this” might translate naturally but leave the Persian reader unsure of the referent.

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
پژوهش حاضر به بررسی تأثیر آموزش مجازی بر مشارکت دانشجویان می‌پردازد. The present study examines the effect of online education on student participation. Introduces the topic.
هدف اصلی این پژوهش، مقایسهٔ دو روش آموزشی است. The main aim of this study is to compare two teaching methods. A compact aim statement.
داده‌ها از طریق مصاحبه‌های نیمه‌ساختاریافته گردآوری شدند. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Procedure-focused passive.
بر اساس یافته‌های پژوهش، میان دو متغیر رابطه‌ای معنادار وجود دارد. Based on the research findings, there is a significant relationship between the two variables. Grounds a claim in evidence.
نتایج نشان می‌دهند که این روش در کوتاه‌مدت مؤثرتر است. The results show that this method is more effective in the short term. Reports a finding.
با این حال، تفاوت مشاهده‌شده از نظر آماری معنادار نبود. However, the observed difference was not statistically significant. Limits the preceding result.
از این رو می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که بافت اجتماعی نیز نقش مهمی دارد. Therefore, one can conclude that social context also plays an important role. Draws an inference.
به عبارت دیگر، افزایش دسترسی لزوماً به افزایش مشارکت نمی‌انجامد. In other words, greater access does not necessarily lead to greater participation. Reformulates and qualifies.
به نظر می‌رسد که این تغییر ناشی از تفاوت در شیوهٔ نمونه‌گیری باشد. It appears that this change may result from a difference in sampling method. Cautious interpretation.
چنان‌که کریمی (۱۴۰۱) نشان داده است، این مسئله به یک گروه خاص محدود نیست. As Karimi (1401) has shown, this issue is not limited to one particular group. Integrates a source into the sentence.
برخلاف پژوهش‌های پیشین، مطالعهٔ حاضر اثر معناداری گزارش نکرد. Unlike previous studies, the present study did not report a significant effect. Positions a result against earlier work.
یکی از محدودیت‌های این پژوهش، حجم نسبتاً کم نمونه است. One limitation of this study is the relatively small sample size. States a limitation directly.
با توجه به این محدودیت، در تعمیم نتایج باید احتیاط کرد. In view of this limitation, caution is needed when generalizing the results. Connects limitation to implication.
در مجموع، شواهد موجود از فرضیهٔ نخست حمایت می‌کنند. Overall, the available evidence supports the first hypothesis. Gives a measured summary.

Common Mistakes

Using a conclusion marker without a logical basis

  • Wrong: نمونه کوچک بود. بنابراین، روش پژوهش کیفی بود.
  • Right: نمونه کوچک بود. با این حال، داده‌های گردآوری‌شده اطلاعات ارزشمندی فراهم کردند.
  • Why: بنابراین claims that the second statement follows from the first. Choose a connector that states the real relationship; here it is concession, not consequence.

Conjugating the verb after impersonal می‌توان

  • Wrong: می‌توانیم نتیجه گرفت که این فرضیه درست است.
  • Right: می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که این فرضیه تأیید می‌شود.
  • Why: Impersonal می‌توان is followed by the bare past stem گرفت. If you mean “we can conclude,” use می‌توانیم نتیجه بگیریم; both verbs then belong to a personal construction.

Translating “according to” with one formula everywhere

  • Wrong: به گفتهٔ یافته‌های پژوهش، ...
  • Right: بر اساس یافته‌های پژوهش، ...
  • Why: Findings are the basis for an inference, so بر اساس fits. به گفتهٔ normally attributes a statement to a speaker, author, report, or source capable of “saying” something.

Making every claim absolute

  • Wrong: این مطالعه ثابت می‌کند که این روش همیشه مؤثر است.
  • Right: یافته‌های این مطالعه نشان می‌دهند که این روش در شرایط بررسی‌شده مؤثر است.
  • Why: ثابت می‌کند “proves” and همیشه “always” exceed what one limited study normally establishes. State the population, conditions, and degree of certainty supported by the evidence.

Copying English noun order

  • Wrong: پژوهش نتایج تحلیل
  • Right: تحلیلِ نتایجِ پژوهش
  • Why: Persian normally links a head noun to its modifiers with ezafe: “analysis of the research results.” Identify the main noun first, then build the chain in Persian order.

Mixing spoken and scholarly forms

  • Wrong: نتایج نشون می‌ده که این روش بهتره.
  • Right: نتایج نشان می‌دهند که این روش مؤثرتر است.
  • Why: نشون and بهتره are conversational reductions. Academic writing normally uses نشان and است, with agreement appropriate to the sentence and a precise comparison such as مؤثرتر when effectiveness is intended.

Usage Notes

Register and author presence

Persian academic traditions and individual disciplines differ in how visibly the writer appears. در این مقاله نشان می‌دهیم که ... “In this article, we show that ...” is possible, including for a single author in some conventions, while impersonal در این مقاله نشان داده می‌شود که ... shifts attention to the argument. Neither is universally superior. Follow recent publications in your field and the institution’s style guide.

Formulaic expressions can provide useful structure, but heavy bureaucratic language is not automatically scholarly. Phrases such as لازم به ذکر است که “it is necessary to mention that” are common, yet a direct statement is often shorter and stronger. Use technical Arabic-origin vocabulary when it is the established term, not merely to make the prose sound elevated.

Typography and cohesion

Use the Persian comma ،, question mark ؟, and semicolon ؛ in Persian prose. Standard digital writing also distinguishes joined prefixes and suffixes with a zero-width non-joiner where appropriate: می‌توان, پژوهش‌های, گردآوری‌شده. Practices vary somewhat among publishers, so consistency with an editorial guide matters.

A coherent paragraph usually has one controlling point. Repetition of a key technical noun can be clearer than replacing it with several vague pronouns. Persian permits elegant lexical repetition; avoiding every repeated word, as English style advice sometimes encourages, may reduce precision.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Advanced scholarly writing calibrates not only certainty but also the source of knowledge. Compare:

Persian English Evidential effect
نتایج نشان می‌دهند که ... The results show that ... Attributes the claim to data.
می‌توان استدلال کرد که ... It can be argued that ... Presents a reasoned position.
به نظر می‌رسد که ... It appears that ... Marks an inference cautiously.
پژوهش‌های پیشین حاکی از آن‌اند که ... Previous studies indicate that ... Locates support in prior research.
نمی‌توان با قطعیت گفت که ... It cannot be said with certainty that ... Explicitly withholds a firm conclusion.

Writers also manage concession: they acknowledge a fact and then explain why the main position still stands. A productive frame is اگرچه ...، ... “although ..., ...”:

اگرچه حجم نمونه محدود است، هم‌سویی نتایج با مطالعات پیشین اهمیت این یافته را افزایش می‌دهد.
“Although the sample size is limited, the agreement of the results with previous studies increases the importance of this finding.”

Be careful not to hide weak reasoning beneath complex syntax. Long sentences are acceptable only when their internal relations remain clear. When a sentence contains evidence, limitation, contrast, and conclusion all at once, splitting it into two or three sentences often produces more authoritative Persian.

Finally, distinguish a finding from an interpretation. دوازده نفر از بیست شرکت‌کننده پاسخ مثبت دادند reports an observation. این پاسخ‌ها نشان‌دهندهٔ اعتماد بیشتر است interprets it. Marking that transition with این یافته ممکن است نشان‌دهندهٔ ... باشد helps the reader see where the data end and your analysis begins.

Practice Tips

  1. Build a connector map, not a translation list. Sort expressions under cause, result, contrast, addition, reformulation, and limitation. For each one, write two connected Persian sentences so that the logic is visible.
  2. Reverse-outline a real abstract. Take a Persian journal abstract and label each sentence “aim,” “method,” “finding,” “interpretation,” or “limitation.” Then underline the phrases that signal each move. This trains genre awareness without copying whole passages.
  3. Rewrite claims at three strengths. Start with این روش مؤثر است. Make it cautious with به نظر می‌رسد, then restrict its scope with در نمونهٔ بررسی‌شده. Check that each version says exactly as much as its imagined evidence permits.
