Discourse Markers in Chinese
话语标记
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
Discourse markers (话语标记, huàyǔ biāojì) are connectors that organize complex speech and writing. They signal logical relationships between ideas: 首先 (first), 其次 (second), 另外 (in addition), 总之 (in short), 反正 (anyway), 既然...就 (since...then). These move your Chinese beyond simple sentence pairs into structured, coherent discourse.
At the CEFR B2 level, discourse markers are essential for presentations, essays, debates, and extended conversation. They signal to the listener how the next statement relates to the previous one, making your speech easier to follow and more sophisticated.
Many discourse markers have both formal and informal variants. Knowing when to use 反正 (casual "anyway") versus 总之 (formal "in summary") is part of register awareness.

Summarizing and concluding

Common Mistakes
Using 反正 in formal contexts
- Wrong: In a presentation: 反正这个问题很重要。
- Right: 总之/总的来说,这个问题很重要。
- Why: 反正 is casual and implies a "whatever" attitude; use 总之 for formal summaries.
Overusing 然后
- Wrong: 然后...然后...然后... (chaining everything with "then")
- Right: Use 首先, 其次, 另外, 最后 for variety
- Why: While 然后 is correct, overuse makes speech monotonous. Discourse markers add structure.
Misusing 既然
- Wrong: 既然明天下雨 (predicting future)
- Right: 既然 implies an established fact: 既然你已经决定了 (since you've already decided)
- Why: 既然 refers to a situation that is already true, not a hypothetical.
Practice Tips
- Practice giving structured opinions: 首先... 其次... 最后... This framework works for any topic.
- Use 反正 in casual conversation to express determination or indifference, and 总之 in formal settings.
- When telling stories, replace some 然后 with 于是, 后来, 接着 for better narrative flow.
