Discourse Markers and Connectors in Urdu

This article is part of the Urdu grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Advanced Urdu discourse markers tell the reader how one statement relates to another. البتہ introduces a qualification or contrast, بہرحال returns to the main point regardless of what came before, چنانچہ presents a result, and علاوہ ازیں and مزید برآں add supporting information. They are especially useful in essays, reports, formal discussion, and carefully structured speech.
Overview
A discourse marker is a word or phrase that guides the listener or reader through an argument. It may signal “this partly contrasts with the last point,” “this follows as a result,” or “here is one more relevant fact.” Unlike a basic conjunction such as اور “and” or لیکن “but,” a discourse marker often connects whole statements or stretches of discussion rather than merely joining two words.
At C1, choosing the logically precise connector matters as much as knowing its dictionary meaning. English “however,” “anyway,” “therefore,” “moreover,” and “furthermore” overlap, but they do different jobs. Urdu makes similar distinctions. For example, البتہ does not normally present a consequence, while چنانچہ does not merely add another point.
These forms are common in formal writing, news analysis, lectures, presentations, and polite, deliberate speech. Some also occur naturally in everyday conversation, particularly البتہ and بہرحال. The two addition markers علاوہ ازیں and مزید برآں usually sound more formal than everyday اور “and” or اس کے علاوہ “besides/in addition.”
How It Works
The five core markers organize three broad relationships: contrast or qualification, return to the main line, result, and addition.
| Marker | Transliteration | Core function | Typical English equivalent | Usual register |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| البتہ | albattā | qualifies or contrasts with the previous statement | however, though, admittedly | neutral to formal |
| بہرحال | baharhāl | sets earlier complications aside and resumes the main point | in any case, anyway, nevertheless | neutral; speech and writing |
| چنانچہ | chunānche | introduces an outcome or logical consequence | consequently, therefore, and so | formal or narrative |
| علاوہ ازیں | alāvā azīṅ | adds a separate relevant point | moreover, in addition | formal |
| مزید برآں | mazīd barāṅ | adds another supporting point, often in an argument | furthermore, moreover | distinctly formal |
Qualification and contrast with البتہ
البتہ often acknowledges a point and then narrows, balances, or qualifies it. A qualification is a detail that limits how broadly a statement should be understood.
Pattern: statement + البتہ + qualification or contrasting statement
منصوبہ اچھا ہے، البتہ اس پر خرچ زیادہ آئے گا۔
The plan is good; however, it will cost more.
This is softer and more measured than simply opposing the first statement with لیکن “but.” Compare:
- لیکن directly joins contrasting clauses: “but.”
- البتہ often sounds like “however,” “though,” or “admittedly,” and may present a reservation after first accepting something.
It can appear at the beginning of the second sentence or clause. It may also occur later in the clause, especially in speech, but learners will usually produce the clearest prose by placing it near the start of the contrasting point.
Returning to the main point with بہرحال
بہرحال means that the following point remains relevant despite uncertainty, disagreement, or the complications just mentioned.
Pattern: complication or digression + بہرحال + point that still holds
شاید وہ آج نہ آئے۔ بہرحال، ہمیں اجلاس شروع کرنا چاہیے۔
Perhaps he will not come today. In any case, we should start the meeting.
English “anyway” can dismiss someone rudely or abruptly change the subject. Urdu بہرحال can also close a digression, but in careful use it often means “whatever the exact situation may be” rather than expressing impatience. Context and tone decide how forceful it sounds.
Although both بہرحال and البتہ may be translated with “nevertheless” in some contexts, their logic differs. البتہ introduces a contrast or reservation; بہرحال says that the next conclusion or action stands regardless.
Showing a result with چنانچہ
چنانچہ points forward to what happened or what follows from the preceding facts. The first statement supplies the cause, reason, or circumstances; the چنانچہ clause supplies the result.
Pattern: reason or situation + چنانچہ + result
بارش مسلسل ہوتی رہی، چنانچہ میچ ملتوی کر دیا گیا۔
It kept raining, so the match was postponed.
Do not confuse a logical relation with chronology. Two events occurring one after another are not enough: the second should be presented as a consequence of the first. چنانچہ is often more literary or formal than conversational اس لیے “therefore/for that reason.” It is also frequent in narrative prose, where it can be rendered naturally as “and so.”
Adding information with علاوہ ازیں and مزید برآں
Both markers introduce an additional point, but they do more than place one item beside another. They tell the reader that the new information contributes to the same discussion or supports the same conclusion.
یہ طریقہ سستا ہے۔ علاوہ ازیں، اس پر عمل کرنا بھی آسان ہے۔
This method is inexpensive. In addition, it is easy to implement.
نئی پالیسی سے وقت بچے گا۔ مزید برآں، اخراجات بھی کم ہوں گے۔
The new policy will save time. Furthermore, costs will also decrease.
علاوہ ازیں is a formal “in addition” or “moreover.” مزید برآں is strongly associated with structured argument, official prose, and presentations. In ordinary conversation, اس کے علاوہ is usually the more natural choice. There is no absolute semantic wall between علاوہ ازیں and مزید برآں; the difference is often one of style and rhetorical emphasis rather than factual meaning.
Position and punctuation
These markers do not change the internal grammar of the clause that follows. Urdu normally keeps its usual subject–object–verb tendency; the connector simply frames the relationship to the preceding discourse.
They commonly stand at the beginning of a sentence or after a clause boundary. Modern Urdu writing may place a comma after a sentence-initial marker, especially where a pause is intended, but punctuation practice varies. The logical relationship must remain clear even without the comma. Avoid inserting a comma mechanically after every occurrence.

Common Mistakes
Using چنانچہ for a simple sequence
- Wrong: میں دفتر پہنچا، چنانچہ میں نے دروازہ کھولا۔ — if opening the door is merely the next event
- Better: میں دفتر پہنچا اور پھر میں نے دروازہ کھولا۔ — “I arrived at the office and then opened the door.”
- Why: چنانچہ presents the second clause as a consequence, not just as something that happened next. Use اور پھر “and then” for plain sequence.
Treating البتہ as a universal replacement for لیکن
- Awkward: میں نے اسے بلایا، البتہ وہ نہیں آیا۔
- Natural: میں نے اسے بلایا، لیکن وہ نہیں آیا۔ — “I invited/called him, but he did not come.”
- Why: A direct contrast often calls for لیکن. Use البتہ when you are adding a considered reservation, concession, or limitation.
Translating every English “anyway” as بہرحال
- Awkward: وہ بہرحال کون ہے؟ — as a word-for-word version of “Who is he, anyway?”
- Natural: آخر وہ کون ہے؟ — “Who is he, after all?”
- Why: English “anyway” has several conversational functions. بہرحال is best when earlier details are being set aside or when a point remains valid despite them.
Overloading one sentence with formal additions
- Heavy: علاوہ ازیں یہ مفید ہے، مزید برآں یہ سستا ہے، مزید برآں یہ آسان بھی ہے۔
- Better: یہ مفید اور سستا ہے۔ علاوہ ازیں، اسے استعمال کرنا بھی آسان ہے۔
- Why: Connectors create structure only when used selectively. Ordinary coordination with اور is clearer for closely related items.
Using a result marker where only addition is intended
- Wrong: رپورٹ مختصر ہے، چنانچہ اس میں نئی مثالیں بھی شامل ہیں۔ — unless the examples are a consequence of its being short
- Right: رپورٹ مختصر ہے۔ علاوہ ازیں، اس میں نئی مثالیں بھی شامل ہیں۔
- Why: چنانچہ means “as a result”; علاوہ ازیں means “here is another point.”
Usage Notes
Match the marker to the setting
In conversation, بہرحال and البتہ can sound natural without making the speaker sound unusually formal. چنانچہ is possible in polished speech but may sound bookish in casual chat; اس لیے is often more conversational. علاوہ ازیں and especially مزید برآں belong readily in essays, reports, formal correspondence, and speeches. In relaxed conversation, اس کے علاوہ usually carries the same additive function more naturally.
Do not rely on one-word English equivalents
Translation is a useful starting point, not a complete rule. Depending on context, البتہ may become “however,” “though,” or “admittedly”; بہرحال may become “in any case,” “anyway,” or “nevertheless”; and چنانچہ may be “therefore,” “consequently,” or simply “so.” First identify the relationship between the statements, then choose the English wording—or, when writing Urdu, the Urdu marker—that expresses it.
Watch agreement elsewhere in the sentence
The markers themselves do not inflect: their form does not change for gender, number, or tense. Any agreement still belongs to the ordinary sentence grammar. For example, کوشش کرنی چاہیے uses feminine کرنی because کوشش is feminine; بہرحال has no effect on that form.
Beyond the Basics: Building an Argument
At advanced level, connectors do not merely decorate individual sentences; they reveal the architecture of an argument. A well-organized paragraph may establish a position, concede a limitation with البتہ, add evidence with علاوہ ازیں, and then state a consequence with چنانچہ. Each marker should perform a distinct job.
یہ تجویز طویل مدت میں مفید ثابت ہو سکتی ہے۔ البتہ ابتدائی اخراجات زیادہ ہوں گے۔ علاوہ ازیں، عملے کو نئی تربیت درکار ہوگی۔ چنانچہ اس پر مرحلہ وار عمل کرنا زیادہ مناسب ہوگا۔
This proposal may prove useful in the long term. However, the initial costs will be high. In addition, the staff will need new training. Consequently, implementing it in stages would be more appropriate.
Notice that the final sentence follows from the two practical constraints. Replacing چنانچہ with مزید برآں would destroy that cause-and-result structure.
Skilled writers also vary explicit and implicit linking. If the relationship is already obvious, no marker may be needed. Too many formal connectors can make Urdu prose bureaucratic or mechanically translated. Conversely, a long paragraph with no signals can force the reader to infer every turn in the reasoning. The goal is not maximum frequency but maximum clarity.
Two nearby forms are useful for contrast. اس کے باوجود means “despite that/nevertheless” and emphasizes that the following situation holds contrary to expectation. بلکہ often corrects or strengthens what precedes it: “rather” or “in fact.” They cannot simply replace the five core markers, but recognizing them helps prevent forcing البتہ or بہرحال into every contrastive context.
Practice Tips
- Label the logical relationship first. Take a short Urdu article and mark each transition as qualification, return to the main point, result, or addition. Only then identify the connector. This builds meaning-based choice rather than word-for-word translation.
- Rewrite one paragraph in two registers. Use اس لیے and اس کے علاوہ in a conversational version, then چنانچہ, علاوہ ازیں, or مزید برآں in a formal version. Read both aloud and notice the change in tone.
- Build connector pairs. Write two sentences that genuinely support one another, then join them with one marker. Check the logic by replacing the marker with its full meaning: “despite the complication,” “as a consequence,” or “here is another supporting point.”
