Discourse Markers in Mandarin Chinese
话语标记
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Mandarin discourse markers show how one idea relates to the larger message: 首先 introduces a first point, 其次 a second point, 另外 an addition, and 总之 a summary. 反正 signals that the speaker's conclusion will not change, while 既然…就… presents a fact as already established and draws a natural conclusion from it.
Overview
Discourse markers are words and patterns that guide a listener or reader through a conversation, explanation, or argument. They do not usually describe the event itself. Instead, they tell us whether a point comes first, adds information, summarizes what came before, or follows from an accepted fact. At B2, these signals help you move beyond a series of short sentences and build a coherent stretch of Mandarin.
English often relies on connectors such as “first,” “in addition,” “in short,” and “anyway.” Mandarin has close counterparts, but they are not interchangeable word for word. 首先、其次、另外 mainly organize information; 总之 closes or condenses it; 反正 expresses the speaker's attitude toward the options; and 既然…就… links a known reason to a conclusion. Choosing the marker that matches your purpose matters more than translating an English connector mechanically.
These forms occur in presentations, essays, meetings, explanations, and ordinary conversation. Some are flexible across speech and writing, while others carry a noticeable tone. In particular, 反正 can sound casual, resigned, impatient, or dismissive, so it deserves more care than the neutral organizing markers.
How It Works
Organizing a sequence: 首先 and 其次
Use 首先 (first of all; to begin with) to open the first point in an ordered explanation. It can appear at the start of a sentence or immediately after the topic or subject.
- 首先,我们需要了解问题。 — First, we need to understand the problem.
- 我们首先需要了解问题。 — We first need to understand the problem.
Use 其次 (second; next; secondly) for the next important point. It often pairs with 首先, but it can also mean “next” or “second in importance” without an explicit 首先 nearby.
A common planning frame is:
首先,A;其次,B;最后,C。
First, A; second, B; finally, C.
For a clearly numbered list, Mandarin also uses 第一、第二、第三. The difference is one of presentation: 第一/第二 label numbered items directly, while 首先/其次 create a smoother argumentative sequence. Do not keep repeating 其次 for every later point; after it, use 再次、第三、最后, or switch to explicit numbering.
Adding another point: 另外
另外 means in addition, besides, or another. As a discourse marker, it introduces information that is separate but relevant:
我们要考虑价格。另外,时间也很重要。
We need to consider the price. In addition, timing is also important.
It may also modify a noun-like expression:
另外一个问题 — another problem
另外两个人 — two other people
This article focuses on its connecting use. Unlike 其次, 另外 does not tell the reader that the new point is second in a planned order. It simply adds something. In careful prose, 此外 also means “in addition” and is usually more formal and written than 另外.
Drawing a summary: 总之
Use 总之 (in short; all in all; in any case) before a conclusion that condenses several earlier facts or arguments:
路很远,天气也不好。总之,今天不适合出发。
The journey is long, and the weather is bad too. All in all, today is not a good day to leave.
The summary should be supported by what came before. 总之 is not merely a decorative way to start a final sentence. It tells the audience, “Here is the overall point.” It works in both speech and writing, though a long formal argument may also use expressions such as 综上所述 (“in view of the above”), which belongs to a more formal register.
Signaling a fixed conclusion: 反正
反正 is often translated as anyway, but its central meaning is more specific: despite different circumstances or alternatives, the speaker's conclusion remains the same.
不管别人怎么说,我反正要试一试。
Whatever other people say, I'm going to give it a try anyway.
It commonly appears before the subject's decision or judgment, or after the subject:
- 反正我不去。 — Anyway, I'm not going.
- 我反正不去。 — As for me, I'm not going anyway.
Because 反正 foregrounds the speaker's settled position, it can imply “there is no point discussing the alternatives.” That may sound relaxed among friends but blunt in a workplace or delicate disagreement. It does not normally mean “returning to the previous topic”; conversational English anyway can do that, but Mandarin often uses 话说回来 (“coming back to the point”) or simply changes topic without 反正.
Reason and consequence: 既然…就…
既然…就… means since/given that …, then …. The 既然 clause presents a reason as known, accepted, or now established. The 就 clause gives the decision, advice, command, or conclusion that follows.
既然 + established situation,(subject) + 就 + consequence
既然你来了,就坐一会儿吧。
Since you're here, stay for a while.
The subjects may be the same or different:
- 既然你同意了,我们就开始吧。 — Since you have agreed, let's begin.
- 既然大家都到了,会议就可以开始了。 — Since everyone is here, the meeting can begin.
When the subject of the consequence is stated, it normally comes before 就: 我们就开始, not 就我们开始 for the intended neutral meaning. In conversation, 就 may sometimes be omitted when the relationship is obvious, but the full pair is the clearest model and makes the logic explicit.
Choosing the right marker
| Communicative job | Main form | Typical English meaning | Key question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open an ordered explanation | 首先 | first; first of all | What is point one? |
| Continue an ordered explanation | 其次 | second; next | What is the next point? |
| Add a separate relevant fact | 另外 | in addition; besides | What else should be considered? |
| Condense earlier discussion | 总之 | in short; all in all | What is the overall conclusion? |
| Keep the same conclusion despite alternatives | 反正 | anyway; in any case | What will not change? |
| Infer from an accepted fact | 既然…就… | since…then… | Given this fact, what follows? |
Examples in Context

Common Mistakes
Using 其次 for every added idea
- Awkward: 首先要检查设备,其次要联系客户,其次要安排车辆。
- Better: 首先要检查设备,其次要联系客户,最后要安排车辆。
- Why: 其次 normally marks the second point or the next major point. Use 第三、再次 or 最后 as the sequence continues, or use 另外 if you are simply adding information.
Treating 另外 and 其次 as exact synonyms
- Awkward: 我有两个理由。另外,价格太高;另外,质量也不稳定。
- Better: 我有两个理由。首先,价格太高;其次,质量也不稳定。
- Why: An explicitly ordered pair calls for sequence markers. 另外 adds a point but does not number it.
Using 总之 before giving any basis for a summary
- Awkward: 总之,我先介绍一下我们的公司。
- Better: 首先,我先介绍一下我们的公司。
- Why: 总之 looks backward and summarizes. To open the first stage of a talk, use 首先 or a simple phrase such as 先….
Translating every English “anyway” as 反正
- Awkward: 反正,我们刚才说到哪儿了? when you mean “Anyway, where were we?”
- Better: 对了,我们刚才说到哪儿了?
- Why: 反正 expresses an unchanged conclusion, not merely a return to the topic. 对了 can reorient the conversation; 话说回来 can return to a previous point.
Putting 就 before the subject in the consequence
- Wrong: 既然你没时间,就我们明天再谈。
- Right: 既然你没时间,我们就明天再谈。
- Why: In the neutral pattern, the subject 我们 comes before the linking adverb 就.
Using 既然 for an uncertain possibility
- Awkward: 既然明天可能下雨,我们就取消活动吧。
- Better: 如果明天下雨,我们就取消活动。
- Why: 既然 treats its reason as established or accepted. 如果 introduces a condition that may or may not happen. If the forecast is being accepted as sufficient evidence, 既然天气预报说明天有雨… is natural.
Usage Notes
首先、其次、另外 are common in both prepared speech and writing. In spontaneous conversation, speakers often prefer the shorter 先…,再…,最后… for a sequence of actions. Compare 首先分析原因,其次提出办法 in a structured report with 先看看问题,再想办法 in everyday speech.
另外 is neutral and versatile. 此外 is more characteristic of formal written exposition, while 还有 is especially natural in conversation. All can add information, but their register differs: 另外 sits comfortably in the middle.
总之 may summarize facts, arguments, or a speaker's overall assessment. In casual speech it can also close down a long explanation: 总之,你来就知道了 (“Anyway, you'll understand when you come”). Tone matters; said sharply, it may imply that further discussion is unnecessary.
反正 is strongly conversational and stance-heavy. It works naturally when alternatives genuinely do not change the outcome: 早去晚去都一样,反正今天能到. In formal analysis, a more explicit logical connector is usually better. Avoid 反正 when speaking to a client or disagreeing with a superior unless the informal, uncompromising tone is intentional.
Punctuation is not part of the grammar, but commas make these relationships easy to read. Sentence-initial markers such as 首先、另外、总之 are commonly followed by a comma. In 既然…就…, a comma usually separates the two clauses.
Beyond the Basics: Combining and Refining Markers
A strong paragraph uses markers selectively rather than placing one at the start of every sentence. The marker should reveal real structure. For example:
首先,我们需要确认用户的需求。其次,要评估开发时间。另外,预算也可能影响方案。总之,在决定之前还需要更多信息。
First, we need to confirm the users' needs. Second, we must assess the development time. In addition, the budget may also affect the plan. In short, we need more information before making a decision.
Here 首先/其次 create the main sequence, 另外 adds a point outside that sequence, and 总之 draws the conclusion. This is more precise than using the same connector repeatedly.
Several nearby forms deserve comparison:
| Form | Main function | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 先…再… | Sequence actions | Common in speech and instructions |
| 首先…其次… | Structure points or reasons | Common in explanations and arguments |
| 另外 | Add a separate point | Neutral across speech and writing |
| 此外 | Add a point | More formal and written |
| 总之 | Summarize into an overall conclusion | Neutral; can also close discussion in speech |
| 综上所述 | Conclude from the material above | Formal reports and academic writing |
| 不管…都… | State that all alternatives give the same result | Explicit “no matter…” construction |
| 反正 | Present a conclusion as unchanged | Subjective, often conversational |
反正 often appears alongside an explicit “no matter” pattern: 不管结果怎么样,反正我已经尽力了. The first part lays out the range of possibilities; 反正 highlights the speaker's settled conclusion. This combination is emphatic, not required.
With 既然…就…, the conclusion may be a statement, suggestion, command, or rhetorical question:
- 既然知道错了,就应该改。 — Since you know it was wrong, you should correct it.
- 既然来了,为什么不进去看看呢? — Since you're here, why not go in and have a look?
The second example does not contain 就, yet the inferential relationship remains natural. At an advanced level, treat 既然…就… as a strong default pairing rather than an inseparable fixed formula. Context, rhythm, and the type of conclusion can make 就 unnecessary. What remains essential is the meaning: the first clause is taken as given, and the second follows from it.
Practice Tips
- Build one four-sentence argument. Choose a familiar topic and use 首先, 其次, 另外, and 总之 once each. Then check whether each marker has a distinct job rather than merely decorating the sentence.
- Sort examples by logic, not translation. When you hear English anyway, ask whether it means “my conclusion will not change” (反正), “to return to the topic” (话说回来), or simply a transition. This prevents overusing 反正.
- Make paired prompts with 既然. Write an established fact on one side—既然已经答应了—and complete it with a natural consequence—就别反悔. Vary the consequence between decisions, advice, and questions.
