Discourse Markers in Thai

คำเชื่อมความ

This article is part of the Thai grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Thai discourse markers show how ideas relate: และ adds, แต่ contrasts, หรือ offers a choice, เพราะ gives a reason, and ดังนั้น / เพราะฉะนั้น introduces a result. More developed Thai also uses paired frames such as เพราะ...จึง... “because...therefore...” and ถึงแม้ว่า...ก็... “even though...still...”. The best marker depends not only on meaning but also on whether you are speaking casually or writing carefully.

Overview

A discourse marker is a word or phrase that guides a listener or reader through connected ideas. It can add information, present an alternative, explain a cause, state a consequence, or signal that the next point contrasts with the previous one. These markers make Thai sound like a connected argument or story rather than a string of unrelated sentences.

At B2, the challenge is no longer simply knowing that แต่ means “but.” You need to distinguish a reason from a result, choose between conversational and formal expressions, and handle paired constructions across two clauses. A clause is a part of a sentence built around an action, state, or description. In เพราะฝนตก เราจึงกลับบ้าน, for example, เพราะฝนตก gives the cause and เราจึงกลับบ้าน gives the result.

English punctuation is not a reliable guide to Thai structure. Thai ordinarily has no spaces between individual words; spaces often divide larger thought groups, and punctuation practices vary by genre. Learn each connector with the relationship it expresses and with a complete sentence pattern—not as a word to insert wherever English uses a comma.

How It Works

The main logical relationships

Relationship Common Thai marker Core meaning Typical position and register
Addition และ and Between parallel words, phrases, or clauses; neutral to formal
Addition ยิ่งกว่านั้น moreover, what is more Usually opens an added point; careful or written style
Alternative หรือ or Between alternatives; also used in questions
Contrast แต่ but Before the contrasting word or clause; common in all registers
Cause เพราะ / เพราะว่า because Introduces the reason
Result ดังนั้น / เพราะฉะนั้น therefore, for that reason Often opens the result sentence or clause
Result จึง therefore, consequently Comes before the verb or predicate in the result clause; careful style
Concession ถึงแม้ว่า / แม้ว่า although, even though Introduces a fact that might lead you to expect another result
Concession/result ก็ / ก็ยัง still, nevertheless Appears in the main clause after a concessive clause
Sentence-level contrast อย่างไรก็ตาม however, nevertheless Often starts a new sentence or thought group; formal or careful

A predicate is the part that says what someone does or what something is like. In เราจึงยกเลิกการเดินทาง “we therefore cancelled the trip,” จึง stands immediately before the predicate ยกเลิกการเดินทาง.

Adding and choosing: และ, ยิ่งกว่านั้น, หรือ

Use และ to join items or ideas of equal status:

  • กาแฟและชา — coffee and tea
  • เขาอ่านหนังสือและจดบันทึก — He reads and takes notes.

In everyday speech, Thai often places connected actions next to each other without repeating และ: กลับบ้าน อาบน้ำ แล้วก็นอน “go home, shower, and then sleep.” Do not force และ between every verb just because English uses “and.”

ยิ่งกว่านั้น adds a stronger supporting point: “moreover” or “what is more.” It normally connects larger ideas, not two simple nouns. Because it has a deliberate, argumentative tone, it is more at home in presentations and writing than in relaxed chat.

Use หรือ between alternatives: จะกินข้าวหรือก๋วยเตี๋ยว “Will you eat rice or noodles?” At the end of a yes/no question, หรือ can also mean “or?” in a more formal pattern, but conversational Thai commonly uses question particles such as ไหม instead. Keep those two uses distinct.

Contrasting: แต่ and อย่างไรก็ตาม

แต่ directly joins a contrast and is natural in both conversation and writing:

อยากไป แต่ไม่มีเวลา
“I want to go, but I don’t have time.”

อย่างไรก็ตาม comments on a whole previous statement and then redirects the discussion. It is closer to sentence-level “however” or “nevertheless” and usually sounds more formal:

แผนนี้มีข้อดีหลายอย่าง อย่างไรก็ตาม ค่าใช้จ่ายค่อนข้างสูง
“This plan has several advantages. However, the cost is fairly high.”

Unlike English “however,” อย่างไรก็ตาม is not normally dropped into the middle of a clause merely to vary style. For a simple spoken contrast, แต่ is usually the safer choice.

Cause and result: เพราะ, ดังนั้น, เพราะฉะนั้น, จึง

Thai lets you present the cause first or the result first:

  • กลับบ้านเร็วเพราะไม่สบาย — “I went home early because I was unwell.”
  • เพราะไม่สบาย จึงกลับบ้านเร็ว — “Because I was unwell, I therefore went home early.”

The second pattern is a paired frame:

เพราะ + cause + จึง + result predicate

จึง belongs inside the result clause, before its verb or description. ดังนั้น and เพราะฉะนั้น are broader transitions that introduce the result:

รถติดมาก เพราะฉะนั้นเราจึงมาสาย
“Traffic was very heavy, so we arrived late.”

Using both เพราะฉะนั้น and จึง is possible and gives the reasoning an explicit, carefully structured feel. In casual speech, a speaker may instead use ก็เลย or เลย for “so/as a result”: รถติดมาก ก็เลยมาสาย. That conversational option is common, but จึง is more suitable in reports, explanations, and formal prose.

English speakers sometimes produce a sentence with both “because” and “so” and regard it as wrong. Thai does not follow that English classroom rule. The paired เพราะ...จึง... construction is grammatical because the two markers label the cause and result halves of one relationship.

Conceding a point: ถึงแม้ว่า...ก็...

A concession acknowledges a fact but says that the expected consequence did not follow. The common frame is:

ถึงแม้ว่า / แม้ว่า + conceded fact + ก็ / ก็ยัง + unexpected result

ถึงแม้ว่าฝนจะตก เราก็ยังออกไปวิ่ง
“Even though it was raining, we still went out for a run.”

จะ often appears after แม้ว่า or ถึงแม้ว่า, including when the meaning is not future. Here it helps frame a hypothetical or conceded situation; it should not automatically be translated as “will.” In natural speech, parts of the frame may be shortened, for example ถึงฝนจะตก ก็จะไป “Even if it rains, I’ll go.”

Do not confuse this relationship with an ordinary condition. ถ้าฝนตก ก็ไม่ไป means “If it rains, I won’t go”: rain determines the result. ถึงแม้ว่าฝนจะตก ก็ยังไป means “Even if/even though it rains, I’ll still go”: rain does not prevent the result.

Examples in Context

Thai English Note
ฉันซื้อผักและผลไม้ I bought vegetables and fruit. และ joins equal items.
เขาพูดภาษาไทยได้ และยังอ่านได้ด้วย He can speak Thai, and he can read it too. Addition across two ideas; ยัง...ด้วย reinforces “also.”
ร้านนี้เดินทางสะดวก ยิ่งกว่านั้น ราคาไม่แพง This shop is easy to reach; moreover, it is inexpensive. A stronger added argument.
คุณจะนั่งรถไฟหรือรถเมล์ Will you take the train or the bus? หรือ presents alternatives.
อยากไป แต่ไม่มีเวลา I want to go, but I don’t have time. Direct, everyday contrast.
วิธีนี้ทำได้เร็ว อย่างไรก็ตาม อาจมีข้อผิดพลาด This method is quick. However, there may be errors. Careful sentence-level contrast.
เขาไม่มาเพราะไม่สบาย He didn’t come because he was unwell. The reason follows the result.
เพราะฝนตก การแข่งขันจึงถูกยกเลิก Because it rained, the match was therefore cancelled. Formal เพราะ...จึง... frame.
รถเสีย ดังนั้นเราต้องเรียกแท็กซี่ The car broke down, so we had to call a taxi. ดังนั้น introduces a conclusion.
วันนี้เป็นวันหยุด เพราะฉะนั้นธนาคารจึงปิด Today is a holiday; therefore, the bank is closed. Explicit result with เพราะฉะนั้น...จึง.
ฉันเหนื่อย ก็เลยกลับก่อน I was tired, so I went home early. Natural conversational result.
ถึงแม้ว่าอาหารจะแพง แต่ก็อร่อยมาก Although the food is expensive, it is very tasty. Concession with แต่ก็ in the result.
แม้ว่าเขาจะมีประสบการณ์น้อย เขาก็ทำงานได้ดี Although he has little experience, he works well. The second ก็ marks the unexpected result.
โครงการมีปัญหาหลายอย่าง อย่างไรก็ตาม เรายังไม่ยอมแพ้ The project has many problems. Nevertheless, we have not given up. ยัง adds the sense of “still.”

Common Mistakes

Translating every English “and” as และ

  • Awkward: ฉันกลับบ้านและฉันอาบน้ำและฉันนอน
  • Better: ฉันกลับบ้าน อาบน้ำ แล้วก็นอน
  • Why: A sequence of everyday actions often flows by simple juxtaposition or with แล้วก็ “and then.” Repeated และ can sound stiff and written.

Putting จึง before the cause

  • Wrong: จึงฝนตก เรากลับบ้าน
  • Right: เพราะฝนตก เราจึงกลับบ้าน
  • Why: เพราะ introduces the cause. จึง belongs in the result clause, normally before its predicate.

Treating อย่างไรก็ตาม as a casual synonym for แต่ everywhere

  • Awkward: อยากกิน อย่างไรก็ตาม ไม่หิว
  • Natural: อยากกิน แต่ไม่หิว
  • Why: อย่างไรก็ตาม links larger statements in a careful or formal style. แต่ is natural for a direct, compact contrast.

Omitting the result marker in a concessive frame

  • Incomplete: ถึงแม้ว่าฝนจะตก เราไปวิ่ง
  • Clearer: ถึงแม้ว่าฝนจะตก เราก็ยังไปวิ่ง
  • Why: Thai can omit recoverable words, but learners should first master the balanced ถึงแม้ว่า...ก็ยัง... frame. It makes the unexpected result unmistakable.

Reading จะ only as future time

  • Misreading: แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย... = “Although he will be tired...” only
  • Correct reading in context: แม้ว่าเขาจะเหนื่อย เขาก็ยังทำงานต่อ = “Although he is tired, he keeps working.”
  • Why: Inside concessive and conditional structures, จะ can help frame the situation rather than locate it strictly in the future.

Mixing a formal connector with very casual phrasing unintentionally

  • Mismatched: รถติดโคตรหนัก ดังนั้นเลยมาช้าอะ
  • Casual: รถติดมาก ก็เลยมาช้า
  • Careful: การจราจรติดขัดมาก ดังนั้นจึงมาถึงล่าช้า
  • Why: Grammar can be correct while the register is uneven. Choose connectors that fit the surrounding vocabulary and situation.

Usage Notes

Spoken and written choices

Everyday Thai relies heavily on แต่, เพราะ, หรือ, แล้วก็, and ก็เลย. More formal explanations favour และ, เนื่องจาก “owing to,” จึง, ดังนั้น, and อย่างไรก็ตาม. This is a tendency, not a rigid ban: ดังนั้น can occur in speech when someone is presenting a reasoned conclusion, and แต่ remains perfectly acceptable in formal writing.

Thai speakers often leave out subjects and other information that is clear from context. A connector may therefore join very short units: อยากไป แต่ไปไม่ได้ “I want to go, but I can’t.” Do not add pronouns merely to make every clause resemble a complete English sentence.

Position and rhythm

Connectors such as ดังนั้น, เพราะฉะนั้น, and อย่างไรก็ตาม often stand at the beginning of a new thought group. A space may visually mark that boundary in Thai writing, but spacing is not identical to English word spacing. When speaking, a slight pause can perform the same organising function.

เพราะ can introduce a reason after the main statement or put the reason first. If both clauses are long, the cause-first เพราะ...จึง... pattern helps the reader keep track of the logic. With short conversational clauses, a lighter pattern is often more natural.

Similar translations, different jobs

แต่ and อย่างไรก็ตาม can both correspond to English “but/however,” but แต่ directly joins contrasting elements while อย่างไรก็ตาม reorients the discourse after a fuller statement. Likewise, เพราะ points backward to a cause, while ดังนั้น, เพราะฉะนั้น, จึง, and เลย point forward to its result.

Beyond the Basics: Managing Emphasis and Flow

Advanced use is less about collecting longer connectors and more about controlling how strongly each relationship is signalled. A Thai sentence may use one marker or a matched pair:

Lighter connection More explicitly structured connection Effect
ฝนตก เลยไม่ไป เพราะฝนตก จึงไม่ไป Conversational result versus careful cause-result structure
เหนื่อย แต่ยังทำต่อ ถึงแม้ว่าจะเหนื่อย แต่ก็ยังทำต่อ Simple contrast versus fully framed concession
โครงการดี และประหยัด โครงการนี้มีประโยชน์ ยิ่งกว่านั้น ยังช่วยประหยัดค่าใช้จ่าย Basic addition versus a developed supporting argument

Thai sometimes combines markers that English would reduce to one: ถึงแม้ว่า...แต่ก็... literally contains signals corresponding roughly to “although...but still...”. This is not automatically redundant in Thai. The opening prepares the concession; แต่ก็ highlights the contrary result. Variants with ก็, ก็ยัง, or แต่ก็ differ mainly in emphasis and sentence shape.

Be careful not to overconnect a paragraph. Repeating ดังนั้น, อย่างไรก็ตาม, and ยิ่งกว่านั้น in every sentence can make writing mechanical. Once the relationship is obvious, Thai can use a lighter connector or no explicit marker at all. Strong writing alternates clear signposting with natural continuity.

This topic overlaps with broader written organisation, where expressions such as ประการแรก “firstly,” นอกจากนี้ “in addition,” and กล่าวโดยสรุป “in summary” organise whole paragraphs. Those expressions are useful next steps, but the core skill here is recognising addition, choice, contrast, cause, result, and concession accurately.

Practice Tips

  1. Build relationship pairs. Take one situation and express it in both directions: ไม่ไปเพราะฝนตก and เพราะฝนตก จึงไม่ไป. This trains you to separate cause from result.
  2. Retell the same event in two registers. Say a casual version with แต่ and ก็เลย, then rewrite it with อย่างไรก็ตาม, ดังนั้น, or จึง. Compare the tone rather than only the dictionary meaning.
  3. Mark connectors while reading. Underline each marker in a Thai news item, post, or transcript and label it “addition,” “contrast,” “cause,” “result,” or “concession.” Then ask whether removing it would change the logic or only the style.
