Advanced Causative Constructions in Thai

In Brief
Thai commonly links an influencing verb to a second action with ให้: สั่งให้เขาส่งรายงาน means “order him to submit the report.” The verb before ให้ shows the kind of influence: แนะนำให้ advises, เรียกร้องให้ formally demands, สั่งให้ orders, and บังคับให้ forces. For a result rather than an instruction, use ทำให้, as in เรื่องนั้นทำให้ผมเศร้า “That made me sad.”
Overview
A causative construction describes one person, thing, or event bringing about an action or result. The person or thing that causes it is the causer; the person who is influenced is sometimes called the causee (simply, the person made or encouraged to act). English spreads this meaning across expressions such as “make someone do,” “cause something to happen,” “have someone do,” “force,” “order,” and “recommend.” Thai makes many of these relationships especially clear with ให้.
At B2, the main task is not memorizing one formula. It is choosing a verb that accurately represents intention, authority, and pressure. A doctor may แนะนำให้ “recommend,” a manager may สั่งให้ “order,” a campaign group may เรียกร้องให้ “call on,” and a threat may บังคับให้ “force.” These are not interchangeable just because all can precede ให้.
Thai verbs do not change form for person, tense, or a special “subjunctive” form after requests and demands. Instead, word order and context identify who influences whom and what action is expected. This is simpler than the English contrast between “make him go,” “order him to go,” and “recommend that he go,” but omitted participants can make a Thai sentence ambiguous unless the surrounding context is clear.
How It Works
Two major patterns
Advanced causatives fall into two broad groups.
| Meaning | Basic pattern | Example | English sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Produce a state or consequence | cause + ทำให้ + affected person/thing + result | ข่าวนี้ทำให้ทุกคนกังวล | This news makes everyone worried. |
| Influence an action | person/institution + directive verb + ให้ + actor + action | หัวหน้าสั่งให้ทีมประชุม | The manager ordered the team to meet. |
The affected person or actor can be left out when it is known:
- แนะนำให้เปลี่ยนแผน — “recommend changing the plan” or “recommend that the plan be changed”
- บังคับให้ส่ง — “force [someone] to submit [it]”
- สั่งให้หยุดทันที — “order [someone] to stop immediately”
Omission is natural, but it is not always precise. In a formal report, naming the relevant person or institution often avoids doubt.
ทำให้: bringing about a result
ทำให้ introduces a result caused by an action, event, fact, or person. What follows may be a feeling, a state, an action, or a whole result clause (a group of words expressing what happened as a consequence).
| Pattern | Thai example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| X + ทำให้ + person + state | คำพูดนั้นทำให้เธอโกรธ | Those words made her angry. |
| X + ทำให้ + thing/person + action | ฝนทำให้รถติด | The rain caused traffic congestion. |
| X + ทำให้ + เกิด + noun | พายุทำให้เกิดความเสียหาย | The storm caused damage. |
| X + ทำให้ + clause | การเปลี่ยนเวลาอาจทำให้เราไปไม่ทัน | Changing the time may cause us to arrive too late. |
In เรื่องนั้นทำให้ผมเศร้า, เรื่องนั้น is the cause, ผม is the affected person, and เศร้า is the resulting state. Do not insert another ให้ before the result: ทำให้ already contains it.
Thai can sometimes use ทำ + object + result, especially in compact or conversational phrases such as อย่าทำฉันตกใจ “Don’t scare me.” For a neutral, explicit cause-and-effect statement, however, ทำให้ is the dependable choice.
แนะนำให้: recommending an action
แนะนำให้ presents an action as advisable. The listener normally retains a choice.
ผู้แนะนำ + แนะนำให้ + ผู้ปฏิบัติ + การกระทำ
- หมอแนะนำให้ผมพักผ่อนมากขึ้น — The doctor recommended that I rest more.
- เราแนะนำให้ลูกค้าจองล่วงหน้า — We recommend that customers book in advance.
When the person receiving the advice is obvious, Thai readily omits that person: แนะนำให้เปลี่ยนแผน “I/they suggest changing the plan.” Add ควร when the recommendation itself is being reported as “should”: เขาแนะนำว่าเราควรเปลี่ยนแผน “He suggested that we should change the plan.” Both structures are possible, but avoid piling them up unnecessarily as แนะนำให้...ควร... in a simple sentence.
เรียกร้องให้: calling for action
เรียกร้องให้ is stronger and more public or formal than a personal suggestion. It is common in news, public statements, workplace disputes, policy discussions, and campaigns. The person or institution after ให้ is the party expected to act.
- ประชาชนเรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลเปิดเผยข้อมูล — Citizens called on the government to disclose the information.
- คณะกรรมการเรียกร้องให้ทุกคนเงียบ — The committee demanded that everyone be quiet.
The verb reports a demand; it does not prove that the demanded action happened. เรียกร้องให้บริษัทชดใช้ค่าเสียหาย says that compensation was demanded, not that the company paid it.
สั่งให้: ordering through authority
สั่งให้ indicates an instruction backed by authority or control. It can occur in families and everyday life, but it is especially clear in institutional, military, administrative, and workplace settings.
- หัวหน้าสั่งให้พนักงานส่งรายงานภายในวันศุกร์ — The manager ordered the employees to submit the report by Friday.
- ศาลสั่งให้บริษัทหยุดดำเนินการชั่วคราว — The court ordered the company to suspend operations temporarily.
The shorter สั่ง + object is used when the object is a thing being ordered, such as สั่งอาหาร “order food.” When one person is ordered to perform an action, สั่งให้ + person + verb makes the structure clear.
For an order not to do something, use สั่งไม่ให้ + person + action or a prohibition with สั่งห้าม:
- ครูสั่งไม่ให้นักเรียนออกจากห้อง — The teacher ordered the students not to leave the room.
- ผู้จัดการสั่งห้ามใช้โทรศัพท์ระหว่างประชุม — The manager prohibited phone use during the meeting.
บังคับให้: removing or sharply limiting choice
บังคับให้ means that someone is compelled by a person, rule, threat, or circumstance. It is stronger than สั่งให้ because it focuses on the lack of a real alternative, not merely on authority.
- ไม่มีใครบังคับให้คุณเซ็นเอกสารนี้ — No one is forcing you to sign this document.
- กฎใหม่บังคับให้ผู้สมัครยืนยันตัวตน — The new rule requires applicants to verify their identity.
With rules and requirements, กำหนดให้ “stipulate/require” is often more neutral than บังคับให้. Compare กฎหมายกำหนดให้บริษัทเก็บข้อมูล “the law stipulates that companies retain data” with กฎหมายบังคับให้บริษัทเก็บข้อมูล “the law compels/requires companies to retain data.” The second highlights obligation more strongly.
A practical force scale
There is no rigid hierarchy that works in every situation, but this scale is a useful first guide:
| Expression | Typical force | Main idea |
|---|---|---|
| แนะนำให้ | low | advice; the person can decide |
| ขอให้ | low to medium | request, wish, or polite appeal |
| เรียกร้องให้ | medium to strong | explicit, often public demand |
| สั่งให้ | strong | order backed by authority |
| บังคับให้ | very strong | compulsion; little or no choice |
Tone, relationship, institutional power, and consequences can change the effect. A formally worded ขอให้ may function as a firm instruction, while an order among close friends may be playful.
Examples in Context

| ความผิดพลาดนี้อาจทำให้โครงการล่าช้า | This mistake may delay the project. | A possible consequence. |
| หมอแนะนำให้เธอลดน้ำตาล | The doctor recommended that she reduce sugar. | Advice; she remains free to choose. |
| ที่ปรึกษาแนะนำให้เปลี่ยนแผน | The adviser suggested changing the plan. | The actor is understood from context. |
| ชาวบ้านเรียกร้องให้โรงงานลดมลพิษ | Local residents called on the factory to reduce pollution. | A public demand. |
| ประธานเรียกร้องให้ทุกคนเงียบ | The chair demanded that everyone be quiet. | The group expected to act is explicit. |
| ผู้อำนวยการสั่งให้เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจสอบเอกสารอีกครั้ง | The director ordered the staff to check the documents again. | Institutional authority. |
| ศาลสั่งให้จำเลยชำระหนี้ | The court ordered the defendant to pay the debt. | Formal legal order. |
| เขาถูกบังคับให้ลาออก | He was forced to resign. | Passive viewpoint: the affected person comes first. |
| บริษัทบังคับให้พนักงานทำงานล่วงเวลา | The company forced its employees to work overtime. | Lack of choice is emphasized. |
| ไม่มีใครบังคับให้ฉันส่งข้อมูลส่วนตัว | No one is forcing me to submit personal information. | Negation applies to the forcing. |
| ครูสั่งไม่ให้นักเรียนส่งงานช้า | The teacher instructed the students not to submit work late. | ไม่ negates the required action. |
| กฎระเบียบกำหนดให้ผู้มาเยือนแสดงบัตรประจำตัว | The regulations require visitors to show identification. | Neutral formal requirement with กำหนดให้. |
Common Mistakes
Using ทำให้ for every English “make”
- Unnatural: หัวหน้าทำให้พนักงานส่งรายงาน when the intended meaning is a direct order
- Better: หัวหน้าสั่งให้พนักงานส่งรายงาน
- Why: ทำให้ says that the manager caused the submission, but it does not identify the method. สั่งให้ specifically says that an order was given.
Omitting the actor when the sentence becomes unclear
- Unclear: ผู้จัดการแนะนำให้เปลี่ยนเวลา
- Clearer when needed: ผู้จัดการแนะนำให้ทีมเปลี่ยนเวลา
- Why: The short version may mean that the manager recommends changing the time generally. Name ทีม if it matters that the team must act.
Confusing an order with force
- Overstated: หมอบังคับให้ผมพักผ่อน for ordinary medical advice
- Better: หมอแนะนำให้ผมพักผ่อน
- Why: บังคับให้ implies compulsion. Use it only if the patient genuinely had little choice; routine advice takes แนะนำให้.
Putting ไม่ in the wrong scope
- Different meaning: ครูไม่สั่งให้นักเรียนออกไป — The teacher did not order the students to leave.
- Intended correction: ครูสั่งไม่ให้นักเรียนออกไป — The teacher ordered the students not to leave.
- Why: Before สั่ง, ไม่ negates the act of ordering. After สั่ง, it negates the action that was ordered.
Treating a demand as a completed result
- Unsupported conclusion: translating ประชาชนเรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลลาออก as “The public made the government resign.”
- Right: “The public called on/demanded that the government resign.”
- Why: เรียกร้องให้ reports what people want. It does not say whether the other party complied.
Adding English-style verb marking
- Wrong approach: looking for a special infinitive or subjunctive form after ให้
- Right: สั่งให้เขาไป, แนะนำให้เขาพัก, เรียกร้องให้บริษัทชดใช้
- Why: Thai places the unchanged verb directly after the actor. Time is supplied by context or words such as แล้ว, จะ, and ภายในวันศุกร์.
Usage Notes
แนะนำให้ works well in personal advice, professional recommendations, instructions, and customer information. To sound more considerate, Thai often adds polite language around it: ขอแนะนำให้คุณสำรองข้อมูลก่อนนะครับ/คะ “I’d recommend that you back up your data first.” The sentence-final particles ครับ and ค่ะ/คะ express politeness but do not change the causative structure.
เรียกร้องให้ is frequent in journalism and public communication. In everyday one-to-one requests, ขอให้ is usually more natural: ขอให้คุณส่งเอกสารพรุ่งนี้ “Please send the documents tomorrow.” Choosing เรียกร้องให้ for a small favor can sound grand, confrontational, or deliberately dramatic.
สั่งให้ openly names an order. Thai speakers may instead use a bare verb, ให้, บอกให้, or polite request wording when social harmony matters. That softer wording does not always mean the instruction is optional. A manager’s รบกวนส่งรายงานภายในบ่ายนี้นะครับ “Could you please send the report by this afternoon?” may function pragmatically as a firm workplace instruction.
Subjects are frequently omitted in Thai. Thus แนะนำให้พักก่อน can mean “I recommend that you rest first,” “They recommend resting first,” or simply “It is advisable to rest first.” English normally forces a clearer choice of subject, so translate according to context rather than mechanically adding “I.”
Beyond the Basics: Viewpoint, Passives, and Embedded Clauses
Presenting the affected person first
Thai can shift attention from the causer to the person affected. With an unpleasant imposed action, ถูก + causative verb + ให้ + action is common:
- เขาถูกบังคับให้ยอมรับเงื่อนไข — He was forced to accept the conditions.
- พนักงานถูกสั่งให้กลับไปทำงาน — The employees were ordered to return to work.
For formal orders, ได้รับคำสั่งให้ literally means “receive an order to” and is often more neutral than ถูกสั่งให้:
- เจ้าหน้าที่ได้รับคำสั่งให้อพยพประชาชน — The officials were instructed to evacuate residents.
Do not use ถูก automatically for every English passive. It commonly carries an adverse or imposed flavor. ได้รับคำแนะนำให้ “received advice to” is appropriate for a neutral or beneficial recommendation.
ให้ versus ว่า
A directive followed by ให้ leads directly into the expected actor and action:
- คณะกรรมการแนะนำให้บริษัทแก้ไขนโยบาย — The committee recommends that the company revise the policy.
A reporting structure with ว่า introduces the content of what was said or thought:
- คณะกรรมการแนะนำว่าบริษัทควรแก้ไขนโยบาย — The committee recommends/suggests that the company should revise the policy.
The first is compact and action-focused. The second makes room for a fuller proposition, often with ควร “should.” With เรียกร้อง and สั่ง, ให้ is normally the clearest connector when an action is demanded or ordered.
Causing an action versus arranging one
English “have someone do something” can express arrangement rather than coercion. Thai often uses plain ให้ in this service or delegation meaning:
- ฉันให้ช่างตรวจแอร์ — I had the technician inspect the air conditioner.
- หัวหน้าให้ฉันติดต่อฝ่ายกฎหมาย — The manager had/asked me to contact the legal department.
This does not automatically mean บังคับให้. Add a more specific verb only when the social meaning matters: ขอให้ for a request, สั่งให้ for an order, or บังคับให้ for compulsion.
Multiple layers of cause
Formal writing may contain one causative inside another:
- มาตรการนี้ทำให้บริษัทต้องบังคับให้ผู้ใช้ยืนยันตัวตน — This measure has caused the company to require users to verify their identity.
Such sentences are grammatical, but repeated causal layers become hard to process. In clear writing, split them when possible: มาตรการนี้กำหนดให้มีการยืนยันตัวตน ดังนั้นบริษัทจึงขอให้ผู้ใช้ยืนยันข้อมูล “The measure requires identity verification, so the company asks users to verify their information.”
Practice Tips
- Build a force ladder. Take one action, such as ส่งรายงาน “submit the report,” and rewrite it with แนะนำให้, ขอให้, เรียกร้องให้, สั่งให้, and บังคับให้. For each sentence, name the relationship and decide whether refusal is realistic.
- Mark the roles. In news headlines or workplace messages, underline the causer, circle the person expected to act, and box the final action. This prevents confusion in long sentences with omitted pronouns.
- Practice negation and viewpoint in pairs. Contrast ไม่สั่งให้ทำ “did not order [someone] to do it” with สั่งไม่ให้ทำ “ordered [someone] not to do it,” then change active บริษัทบังคับให้เขา... into affected-person-first เขาถูกบริษัทบังคับให้....
