In Brief
Formal Thai organizes longer texts with connectors such as ประการแรก (“firstly”), นอกจากนี้ (“in addition”), ในทางกลับกัน (“conversely/on the other hand”), and กล่าวโดยสรุป (“in summary”). These expressions usually introduce a new point or show its relationship to the preceding text; the main challenge is choosing the right logical relationship and keeping the surrounding register consistently formal.
Overview
A discourse connector is an expression that tells the reader how one idea relates to another. It can open the first point, add evidence, introduce an opposing perspective, or announce a conclusion. Basic Thai connectors such as และ (“and”), แต่ (“but”), and เพราะ (“because”) connect words and short clauses. Written discourse connectors work at a larger scale: they guide the reader through paragraphs and complete arguments.
At B2, these expressions become especially useful in reports, opinion essays, formal correspondence, academic assignments, news analysis, and prepared presentations. Thai verbs do not change form after a connector, so there is no new conjugation to learn. The difficulty lies instead in logic, placement, and register (the level of formality appropriate to a situation).
English-speaking learners should resist replacing every English linking phrase word for word. English “on the other hand,” for example, can simply introduce a second consideration. Thai ในทางกลับกัน more strongly suggests a reverse or contrasting direction. Likewise, กล่าวโดยสรุป announces a genuine summary; it is heavier and more formal than a conversational “so, basically.”
How It Works
Position in the sentence
The core connectors most often stand at the beginning of a sentence or clause (a group of words expressing one main idea). They have scope over the statement that follows:
- ประการแรก ผู้วิจัยต้องกำหนดคำถามให้ชัดเจน — Firstly, researchers must define the question clearly.
- นอกจากนี้ ข้อมูลดังกล่าวยังช่วยลดความเสี่ยงได้ — In addition, that information can also reduce risk.
A comma may be used after a sentence-opening connector, especially when it helps the reader see the structure. Thai punctuation is less rigidly tied to clause boundaries than English punctuation, however. A space, sentence break, or no punctuation may appear instead. Do not insert English-style commas mechanically after every connector; prioritize clarity and follow the style of the document.
Thai can omit a subject when the reader can recover it from context. Consequently, the material after a connector may begin directly with a verb phrase:
- ประการแรก ต้องเตรียมเอกสารให้ครบถ้วน — Firstly, the documents must be prepared in full.
This is natural in instructions and general statements. If omission could make the actor unclear, state the subject explicitly.
Four core functions
| Function | Connector | Close English equivalent | What it signals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open an ordered point | ประการแรก | firstly; first of all | The first item in a formal sequence |
| Add information | นอกจากนี้ | in addition; furthermore | A further, related point |
| Reverse the perspective | ในทางกลับกัน | conversely; on the other hand | A genuinely contrasting or reverse relationship |
| Summarize | กล่าวโดยสรุป | in summary; to summarize | A condensed conclusion based on what came before |
These phrases do not themselves prove the relationship between two statements. The content must support the signal. If the second sentence merely gives another example, นอกจากนี้ may fit; if it presents an opposing tendency, ในทางกลับกัน may fit.
Building an ordered argument with ประการ
ประการ means a point, respect, aspect, or matter in formal usage. It creates a clear series:
| Place in sequence | Thai form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| First | ประการแรก | firstly; the first point |
| Second | ประการที่สอง | secondly; the second point |
| Third | ประการที่สาม | thirdly; the third point |
| Final | ประการสุดท้าย | lastly; the final point |
Notice the pattern: the first point normally uses แรก, while numbered later points use ที่ + number. Once ประการแรก has promised an ordered list, continue the structure consistently. A paragraph does not need a connector before every sentence; use the numbered forms for the major points and develop each point normally.
ประการแรก differs from ก่อนอื่น. Both can be translated as “first,” but ก่อนอื่น commonly introduces the first action in a procedure or sequence: ก่อนอื่น ให้เปิดเอกสาร (“First, open the document”). ประการแรก presents the first reason, consideration, or argument: ประการแรก วิธีนี้ประหยัดเวลา (“Firstly, this method saves time”). There is overlap, but the distinction is useful when writing carefully.
Adding a supporting point with นอกจากนี้
นอกจากนี้ means “in addition to this” or “furthermore.” It refers back to an existing point and adds information in the same general direction:
- โครงการนี้ช่วยลดค่าใช้จ่าย นอกจากนี้ ยังทำให้การทำงานรวดเร็วขึ้น — This project reduces costs. In addition, it makes the work faster.
The combination นอกจากนี้ ... ยัง... is common because ยัง reinforces the sense of “also/further.” It is not obligatory:
- นอกจากนี้ โครงการจะสร้างงานในชุมชน — In addition, the project will create jobs in the community.
Do not confuse นอกจากนี้ with simple และ. และ joins items or clauses locally, while นอกจากนี้ can organize a whole new sentence or paragraph as an additional argument. It gives the new material more rhetorical weight.
Presenting a reverse perspective with ในทางกลับกัน
The parts of ในทางกลับกัน literally evoke movement “in the reverse direction.” Use it when the second idea is the converse, opposite tendency, or sharply contrasting side of the first:
- เทคโนโลยีช่วยให้เข้าถึงข้อมูลได้ง่าย ในทางกลับกัน ผู้ใช้อาจได้รับข้อมูลที่ไม่น่าเชื่อถือมากขึ้น — Technology makes information easy to access. On the other hand, users may encounter more unreliable information.
It can connect separate sentences or begin a new paragraph. For a simple contradiction, แต่ (“but”) is often enough. For a concession such as “the plan is useful; however, it is expensive,” อย่างไรก็ตาม (“however/nevertheless”) may be more exact. ในทางกลับกัน asks the reader to turn to the reverse side of a comparison, not merely to notice any limitation.
Closing with กล่าวโดยสรุป
กล่าวโดยสรุป formally announces that the writer will condense the preceding discussion. The following statement should capture the main finding or overall judgment rather than introduce a completely new reason:
- กล่าวโดยสรุป นโยบายนี้มีประโยชน์ แต่ต้องปรับให้เหมาะกับแต่ละพื้นที่ — In summary, this policy is beneficial, but it must be adapted to each area.
Related forms differ in tone. โดยสรุป is a compact written “in summary.” สรุปได้ว่า (“it can be concluded that”) often introduces an inference or finding. สรุปคือ (“the bottom line is...”) is common in less formal explanation and conversation. Choose according to the document and audience.
A model paragraph structure
A short formal argument can follow this plan:
- State the topic or position.
- Introduce the first major reason with ประการแรก.
- Add a supporting reason with ประการที่สอง or นอกจากนี้.
- acknowledge a reverse perspective with ในทางกลับกัน if the argument requires it.
- Restate the overall conclusion with กล่าวโดยสรุป.
This is a planning tool, not a template that every paragraph must follow. Strong writing uses connectors only where the relationship might otherwise be unclear.
Examples in Context
| Thai | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ประการแรก ต้องเตรียมข้อมูลให้ครบถ้วน | Firstly, the information must be prepared in full. | The actor is omitted because the statement is general. |
| ประการแรก องค์กรควรกำหนดเป้าหมายที่ชัดเจน | First of all, the organization should set clear goals. | Opens the first formal recommendation. |
| ประการที่สอง ควรเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนแสดงความคิดเห็น | Secondly, the public should be given an opportunity to express their views. | Continues an ordered series. |
| ประการสุดท้าย ต้องมีการประเมินผลอย่างสม่ำเสมอ | Lastly, there must be regular evaluation. | Marks the final item. |
| โครงการนี้ใช้งบประมาณไม่มาก นอกจากนี้ ยังดำเนินการได้รวดเร็ว | This project does not require a large budget. In addition, it can be implemented quickly. | Adds a benefit in the same direction. |
| นอกจากนี้ ยังมีปัญหาอื่นที่ต้องพิจารณา | Besides this, there are other issues that must be considered. | ยัง reinforces the added point. |
| การทำงานที่บ้านช่วยลดเวลาเดินทาง ในทางกลับกัน พนักงานบางคนอาจรู้สึกโดดเดี่ยว | Working from home reduces commuting time. On the other hand, some employees may feel isolated. | Changes to a contrasting consequence. |
| เมืองใหญ่มีโอกาสในการทำงานมากกว่า ในทางกลับกัน ค่าครองชีพก็มักสูงกว่า | Large cities offer more employment opportunities. Conversely, the cost of living is often higher. | Balances an advantage against a disadvantage. |
| กล่าวโดยสรุป ผลการทดลองเป็นที่น่าพอใจ | In summary, the experimental results are satisfactory. | Condenses the overall finding. |
| กล่าวโดยสรุป มาตรการดังกล่าวมีข้อดีหลายประการ แต่ยังต้องศึกษาผลกระทบระยะยาว | In summary, the measure has several advantages, but its long-term effects still require study. | A balanced conclusion. |
| โดยสรุป ทั้งสองแนวทางมีจุดแข็งต่างกัน | In summary, the two approaches have different strengths. | A shorter alternative to กล่าวโดยสรุป. |
| สรุปได้ว่า คุณภาพการบริการขึ้นอยู่กับทั้งบุคลากรและระบบบริหาร | It can be concluded that service quality depends on both personnel and the management system. | Presents a conclusion derived from evidence. |
Common Mistakes
Using a summary connector to add new evidence
- Wrong: กล่าวโดยสรุป งานวิจัยอีกชิ้นหนึ่งพบผลที่ต่างกัน — “In summary, another study found different results.”
- Right: นอกจากนี้ งานวิจัยอีกชิ้นหนึ่งพบผลที่ต่างกัน — “In addition, another study found different results.”
- Why: A new study is additional evidence, not a summary of the preceding material. Use กล่าวโดยสรุป only when condensing or concluding.
Promising a list but not completing its structure
- Awkward: ประการแรก วิธีนี้ประหยัดเวลา นอกจากนี้ วิธีนี้มีต้นทุนต่ำ when the writer intends two explicitly numbered reasons.
- Better: ประการแรก วิธีนี้ประหยัดเวลา ประการที่สอง วิธีนี้มีต้นทุนต่ำ — “Firstly, this method saves time. Secondly, it has a low cost.”
- Why: After announcing a numbered series, parallel labels make the structure easier to follow. นอกจากนี้ is not grammatically wrong, but it weakens the promised enumeration.
Using ในทางกลับกัน for any second point
- Wrong: ระบบนี้ใช้งานง่าย ในทางกลับกัน มีคู่มือที่ชัดเจน — “The system is easy to use. Conversely, it has a clear manual.”
- Right: ระบบนี้ใช้งานง่าย นอกจากนี้ ยังมีคู่มือที่ชัดเจน — “The system is easy to use. In addition, it has a clear manual.”
- Why: Ease of use and a clear manual support each other; they do not point in reverse directions.
Translating English “first” without considering its job
- Awkward for an instruction: ประการแรก เปิดโปรแกรม — “Firstly, open the program.”
- Better: ก่อนอื่น ให้เปิดโปรแกรม — “First, open the program.”
- Why: ก่อนอื่น naturally begins a procedure. ประการแรก is better for the first reason, feature, or consideration in a formal discussion.
Mixing formal connectors with strongly casual prose
- Mismatched: ประการแรก เรื่องนี้แบบว่ายากมาก — roughly, “Firstly, this is, like, really difficult.”
- Better: ประการแรก ประเด็นนี้มีความซับซ้อนมาก — “Firstly, this issue is highly complex.”
- Why: ประการแรก sets a formal tone, while แบบว่า is conversational. Keep the register of the sentence reasonably consistent.
Repeating connectors too often
- Heavy: ประการแรก... นอกจากนี้... นอกจากนี้... ในทางกลับกัน... กล่าวโดยสรุป... in a very short paragraph.
- Better: Mark only the major transitions and let sentence order, pronouns, and repeated key terms maintain continuity.
- Why: Connectors are signposts. Too many signposts make prose mechanical and can obscure rather than clarify its structure.
Usage Notes
These connectors are strongly associated with planned, structured language, but “written” does not mean “written only.” They are also natural in formal presentations, lectures, meetings, debates, and prepared announcements. Conversely, a personal chat usually favors lighter forms such as แล้วก็ (“and then/also”), แต่ (“but”), or สรุปคือ (“basically/the bottom line is”).
Thai academic prose often combines connectors with formal vocabulary and nominal expressions (phrases that name ideas rather than narrating actions), such as ประเด็น, “issue,” ปัจจัย, “factor,” and ผลกระทบ, “impact.” You do not need to make every sentence abstract, however. Clear formal Thai is better than inflated Thai.
The expression นอกจากนี้ can begin a sentence, but it can also connect material within a longer sentence. At paragraph level, it tells the reader that the whole next point supplements the preceding discussion. If the added information is merely another noun in a list, และ will usually be simpler.
ในทางกลับกัน and อย่างไรก็ตาม overlap, but they are not interchangeable in every context. อย่างไรก็ตาม means “however/nevertheless” and often introduces a qualification despite what came before. ในทางกลับกัน presents the reverse side or a contrasting tendency. Compare:
- วิธีนี้มีประสิทธิภาพ อย่างไรก็ตาม มีค่าใช้จ่ายสูง — This method is effective; however, it is expensive.
- ผู้ส่งออกได้ประโยชน์จากค่าเงินที่อ่อนลง ในทางกลับกัน ผู้นำเข้าต้องจ่ายมากขึ้น — Exporters benefit from a weaker currency; conversely, importers must pay more.
Formal Thai does not require an overt subject in every sentence, but a chain of subjectless statements can become ambiguous. Reintroduce the topic when the reader might otherwise wonder who acts or what is being evaluated.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
Skilled writers vary the strength and precision of their transitions. Instead of treating all addition or contrast markers as synonyms, choose the expression that describes the argument:
| Relationship | Useful Thai form | Typical sense |
|---|---|---|
| Additional point | นอกจากนี้ | in addition; furthermore |
| Stronger reinforcement | ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น | moreover; what is more |
| Concession or limitation | อย่างไรก็ตาม | however; nevertheless |
| Reverse perspective | ในทางกลับกัน | conversely; on the other hand |
| Condensed summary | โดยสรุป | in summary |
| Evidence-based inference | สรุปได้ว่า | it can be concluded that |
A mature argument also distinguishes contrast from concession. Contrast places two differing facts side by side. Concession admits a fact that might appear to weaken the main claim, then maintains or qualifies that claim. English often uses “however” for both, but Thai gives you several more precise options.
Parallel structure makes numbered points persuasive and easy to scan. If ประการแรก begins with a recommendation, later points should preferably use comparable grammatical shapes:
- ประการแรก ควรลดขั้นตอนที่ไม่จำเป็น — Firstly, unnecessary steps should be reduced.
- ประการที่สอง ควรเพิ่มช่องทางการติดต่อ — Secondly, more contact channels should be added.
Switching unpredictably between a recommendation, a fragment, and a long narrative makes the list harder to process even if each connector is correct.
Finally, do not confuse visible organization with good reasoning. A paragraph can contain flawless connectors but still make an unsupported claim. Before inserting ดังนั้น (“therefore”), ในทางกลับกัน, or กล่าวโดยสรุป, ask whether the logical relation is genuinely present. Advanced control means that the connector reveals the structure already built into your ideas.
Practice Tips
- Label the relationship before choosing the Thai. Take a short article and mark each transition as sequence, addition, reverse perspective, concession, or summary. Then select the connector. This prevents translation based only on a loose English equivalent.
- Build four-sentence mini-arguments. Write one sentence with ประการแรก, one with นอกจากนี้ or ประการที่สอง, one contrasting sentence with ในทางกลับกัน, and a real conclusion with กล่าวโดยสรุป. Check that the final sentence summarizes rather than adds evidence.
- Read formal Thai for placement and frequency. In reports or analytical news articles, underline the connectors but also notice paragraphs with no explicit connector. Imitate the restraint: use a marker at a major turn, not automatically at every sentence.
