Discourse Connectors in Vietnamese

Từ Nối Văn Bản

This article is part of the Vietnamese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Vietnamese discourse connectors tell readers how a new point relates to what came before. Use thứ nhất to order points, ngoài ra to add one, mặt khác to present another side, nói cách khác to restate an idea, and tóm lại to summarize. They usually introduce a clause or sentence and are commonly followed by a comma in careful writing.

Overview

A discourse connector is a word or phrase that guides someone through a connected argument, explanation, or narrative. Rather than simply joining two words, it labels the purpose of a larger unit: “this is my first point,” “here is an additional fact,” “now consider another side,” or “this is the conclusion.” In Vietnamese, these expressions are often called từ nối văn bản or từ nối.

At B2, connectors become especially useful in essays, reports, formal email, presentations, and structured discussion. They make the relationship between sentences explicit, so a reader does not have to guess whether the next statement supports, qualifies, or summarizes the previous one. They build on basic conjunctions such as (“and”), nhưng (“but”), (“because”), and nên (“so”).

English-speaking learners should avoid matching each Vietnamese connector to one English word. English “besides,” for example, can sound dismissive in some contexts, while Vietnamese ngoài ra is often simply neutral addition. Choose a connector by its logical function, not by a memorized one-word translation.

How It Works

A clause (a group of words built around a statement or action) may be introduced by a connector. The most common written pattern is:

connector + comma + clause

For example: Ngoài ra, công ty cần đào tạo nhân viên. (“In addition, the company needs to train its staff.”) The connector is not normally required by the sentence grammar; it is a signpost that shows how the sentence fits into the larger text.

Core functions

Function Connector Core meaning What follows
Order thứ nhất, thứ hai, thứ ba firstly, secondly, thirdly numbered points in an argument
Add ngoài ra in addition, besides another relevant point
Contrast or another perspective mặt khác on the other hand a different side of the issue
Reformulate nói cách khác in other words a clearer or equivalent restatement
Summarize tóm lại in summary, to sum up a condensed conclusion

Ordering points with thứ nhất

Use thứ nhất, thứ hai, and thứ ba when presenting reasons, criteria, advantages, or stages as an ordered list. The sequence should be consistent: if a paragraph begins with thứ nhất, readers generally expect thứ hai later. These forms organize arguments rather than merely marking time.

Đầu tiên also means “first,” but it often introduces the first step or event in a process: Đầu tiên, mở tệp này. (“First, open this file.”) By contrast, Thứ nhất, phương án này tiết kiệm chi phí. presents the first point supporting an argument.

Adding information with ngoài ra

Ngoài ra introduces information that is separate but relevant to the same topic. It is neutral and common in informative writing. It may add an advantage, a problem, a requirement, or supporting evidence:

Kế hoạch này khả thi. Ngoài ra, chi phí tương đối thấp. “The plan is feasible. In addition, the cost is relatively low.”

Do not confuse this sentence connector with ngoài + noun, meaning “apart from/besides” something: Ngoài tiếng Việt, cô ấy còn học tiếng Nhật. (“Besides Vietnamese, she also studies Japanese.”) The meanings are related, but the structures differ.

Presenting another side with mặt khác

Mặt khác literally evokes “another side.” It can introduce a contrasting consideration, but the opposition is often less direct than with nhưng (“but”) or tuy nhiên (“however”). It is especially useful when weighing advantages and disadvantages:

Làm việc ở nhà giúp tiết kiệm thời gian. Mặt khác, nhân viên có thể cảm thấy cô lập. “Working from home saves time. On the other hand, employees may feel isolated.”

A preceding một mặt (“on the one hand”) can create the balanced pair một mặt ... mặt khác ..., though mặt khác can also stand alone when the first perspective is already clear.

Restating with nói cách khác

Use nói cách khác when the next wording explains essentially the same idea from a clearer angle. It should not introduce unrelated evidence or a new reason:

Dự án không đủ nhân lực. Nói cách khác, chúng ta không thể hoàn thành đúng hạn nếu không tuyển thêm người. “The project does not have enough staff. In other words, we cannot finish on time unless we hire more people.”

Because nói means “say/speak,” the phrase is natural in both prepared speech and writing. In a formal document, it remains acceptable as a conventional linking expression.

Summarizing with tóm lại

Tóm lại signals that the writer or speaker is compressing the main points into a conclusion. It belongs near the end of a section or argument, not before a completely new topic:

Tóm lại, phương án này rẻ hơn, nhanh hơn và ít rủi ro hơn. “To sum up, this option is cheaper, faster, and less risky.”

A summary does not have to repeat every detail. It should state the result, overall judgment, or central message supported by what came before.

Position and punctuation

These connectors most often occur initially, where their guiding function is easiest to recognize. A comma after an initial connector is conventional in edited prose, particularly when the connector frames the entire sentence. Punctuation practice can vary with sentence length and house style, so the comma is not a grammatical ending attached to the expression itself. For learners, consistently writing Thứ nhất, ... and Tóm lại, ... is a safe, readable pattern.

A connector can also appear after a topic phrase or within a sentence, but forcing it into English-style medial positions often sounds less natural. When in doubt, place it at the start of the sentence it introduces.

Examples in Context

Vietnamese English Note
Thứ nhất, cần chuẩn bị. Firstly, preparation is necessary. Opens the first point.
Thứ hai, chúng ta phải xác định ngân sách. Secondly, we must determine the budget. Continues an ordered argument.
Ngoài ra, còn có vấn đề khác. Besides that, there are other issues. Adds a related concern.
Khóa học có nội dung thực tế. Ngoài ra, lịch học khá linh hoạt. The course has practical content. In addition, its schedule is quite flexible. Adds a second advantage.
Một mặt, công nghệ này giúp tăng năng suất. Mặt khác, chi phí đầu tư ban đầu khá cao. On the one hand, this technology increases productivity. On the other hand, the initial investment is quite high. Balanced two-sided structure.
Mặt khác, chi phí cũng cao. On the other hand, the cost is also high. Introduces a counterweight.
Số người tham gia giảm mạnh. Nói cách khác, chương trình không còn thu hút như trước. Participation fell sharply. In other words, the program is no longer as attractive as before. Interprets the first statement.
Chúng ta cần thay đổi cách làm; nói cách khác, chỉ sửa vài chi tiết là chưa đủ. We need to change our approach; in other words, adjusting a few details is not enough. Clarifies the practical implication.
Tóm lại, kết quả rất tốt. In summary, the results are very good. Gives an overall assessment.
Tóm lại, cả ba giải pháp đều có ưu điểm và hạn chế. To sum up, all three solutions have strengths and limitations. Closes a comparison.
Thứ nhất, dữ liệu chưa đầy đủ. Thứ hai, thời gian phân tích quá ngắn. Firstly, the data is incomplete. Secondly, the analysis period is too short. Parallel numbered reasons.
Khu vực này có giao thông thuận tiện. Mặt khác, giá thuê nhà lại tương đối cao. This area has convenient transport. On the other hand, rents are relatively high. Contrasts benefit and cost.

Common Mistakes

Using mặt khác for any sentence containing “but”

  • Wrong: Tôi muốn đi. Mặt khác, tôi phải làm việc.
  • Better: Tôi muốn đi, nhưng tôi phải làm việc.
  • Why: This is a direct contradiction inside one simple situation, so basic nhưng is more natural. Mặt khác usually shifts to another consideration in a developed discussion.

Adding a new idea after nói cách khác

  • Wrong: Sản phẩm này rẻ. Nói cách khác, cửa hàng đóng cửa lúc chín giờ.
  • Right: Sản phẩm này rẻ. Ngoài ra, cửa hàng đóng cửa lúc chín giờ.
  • Why: Nói cách khác promises a restatement or interpretation. The closing time is additional information, not another wording of “cheap.”

Beginning a list but not maintaining it

  • Weak: Thứ nhất, cần giảm chi phí. Ngoài ra, cần cải thiện chất lượng. Thứ ba, cần đào tạo nhân viên.
  • Clearer: Thứ nhất, cần giảm chi phí. Thứ hai, cần cải thiện chất lượng. Thứ ba, cần đào tạo nhân viên.
  • Why: Numbered signposts create an expectation of a complete, parallel sequence.

Treating ngoài ra as a direct replacement for và

  • Wrong: Tôi mua bánh ngoài ra sữa.
  • Right: Tôi mua bánh và sữa.
  • Why: Ngoài ra normally links larger statements or introduces an additional point. Use to join two nouns in a simple list.

Using tóm lại before unsupported new information

  • Wrong: Tóm lại, ngày mai công ty sẽ tuyển thêm mười người. (when this fact was not discussed)
  • Right: Ngoài ra, ngày mai công ty sẽ tuyển thêm mười người.
  • Why: Tóm lại condenses or concludes earlier material; it should not disguise a new fact as a summary.

Copying English punctuation mechanically

  • Awkward: Tuy nhiên chúng ta, cần xem xét thêm.
  • Better: Tuy nhiên, chúng ta cần xem xét thêm.
  • Why: When a connector frames the whole sentence, put the pause after the connector, not between the subject and its verb phrase.

Usage Notes

These expressions belong comfortably in neutral-to-formal Vietnamese. They are frequent in reports, opinion pieces, academic assignments, meeting remarks, and prepared presentations. In casual conversation, ngoài ra, mặt khác, and nói cách khác remain possible, but a dense chain of explicit signposts may sound rehearsed. Speakers often rely more on context, intonation, and simpler words such as nhưng, với lại (“besides/also,” conversational), or rồi (“then”).

Connector choice also conveys stance. Mặt khác invites the audience to consider an alternative side without necessarily rejecting the first one. Tóm lại claims that the speaker is drawing together what has already been established. Nói cách khác signals an effort to clarify, but can sound patronizing if used repeatedly to restate something the listener already understands.

Vietnamese allows subjects to be omitted when context makes them clear. This explains concise formal examples such as Thứ nhất, cần chuẩn bị. Literally there is no stated “we” or “one”; English usually supplies “we need to prepare” or uses an impersonal translation such as “preparation is necessary.” Do not add a Vietnamese pronoun solely because English needs an explicit subject.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

A polished text uses connectors selectively. Logical organization should also come from paragraph order, repeated key terms, and clear reference words. Putting a connector at the front of every sentence creates a mechanical rhythm and may overstate relationships that are already obvious.

Several nearby connectors are useful, but they are not interchangeable:

Connector Typical force Contrast to the core set
tuy nhiên however, nevertheless marks a clearer obstacle or contradiction than mặt khác
hơn nữa moreover, furthermore adds a point with stronger argumentative weight than neutral ngoài ra
ngược lại conversely, by contrast presents an opposite direction or result
nhìn chung overall, generally gives a broad assessment, not necessarily a final summary
cụ thể là specifically, namely narrows a general statement to details
do đó therefore marks a result or inference rather than a summary

Compare mặt khác and tuy nhiên. In Giải pháp này rẻ. Mặt khác, nó khó triển khai, the second point is another side in an evaluation. In Giải pháp này đã được phê duyệt. Tuy nhiên, chúng ta chưa thể triển khai, the approval creates an expectation that implementation can proceed, and tuy nhiên marks the obstacle that defeats that expectation.

Connectors can operate at different levels. One may link two sentences, while another organizes an entire section. For instance, a report can use thứ nhất to open a paragraph containing several supporting sentences, then use tóm lại to close the whole discussion. Advanced writing depends on this hierarchy rather than treating every connector as a decorative sentence opener.

The paired frame một mặt ... mặt khác ... is valuable for balanced analysis, but balance does not mean equal support. A writer may acknowledge a drawback after mặt khác and still argue strongly for the first option. The connector maps the structure; the surrounding language expresses the judgment.

Practice Tips

  1. Label the logical move. Take a short Vietnamese article and mark each paragraph as order, addition, contrast, reformulation, or summary. Then identify the connector—or note where the relationship is left implicit.
  2. Build five-sentence arguments. Write one topic sentence, two numbered reasons with thứ nhất/thứ hai, one counterpoint with mặt khác, and a conclusion with tóm lại. Check that every connector accurately describes what follows.
  3. Practice substitutions, not translations. Rewrite a paragraph once with ngoài ra, once with hơn nữa, and once with no connector. Notice how the strength and formality change instead of memorizing all three as “moreover.”
