Idiomatic Structures in Chinese
固定结构
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Chinese often links ideas with paired expressions: 不但……而且…… adds a stronger second point, 与其……不如…… prefers one option over another, 无论……都…… says that every possible condition has the same result, and 除了……以外…… marks an exception or an addition. Learn each pair as a complete frame, because the position of the subject and words such as 都, 也, and 还 determine how the sentence is understood.
Overview
These expressions are often called 固定结构 (“fixed structures”) or 关联词语 (“correlative expressions”). A correlative expression is a pair of words that organizes two related parts of a sentence. The content inside each part can change, but the frame makes the relationship clear: addition, preference, an unrestricted condition, or exception.
At B2, knowing the English translation is not enough. The important skill is controlling scope—which part of the sentence an expression applies to—and placing shared or different subjects correctly. English can express the same ideas with “not only,” “rather than,” “no matter,” and “apart from,” but Chinese often signals the relationship at both ends of the construction.
These patterns are common in conversation, news, presentations, essays, and workplace Chinese. They build on basic conjunctions, but allow you to present an argument more precisely and to connect longer clauses naturally.
How It Works
不但……而且……: not only … but also …
Use 不但 A,而且 B when B adds information that is at least as important as A, and often more surprising or impressive.
| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject + 不但 + A,而且 + B | The same subject performs or has both parts | 他不但会唱歌,而且会写歌。 |
| 不但 + Subject 1 + A,而且 + Subject 2 + 也/还 + B | The two parts have different subjects | 不但老师同意,而且家长也支持。 |
With a shared subject, put that subject before 不但. With different subjects, place each subject after its corresponding linking word. In the second clause, 也 (“also”) and 还 (“in addition”) are very common. 而且 may be shortened to 还 or 也 in casual speech, but the full pair gives a clearer, more deliberate structure.
The second part should genuinely add to or strengthen the first. A logical progression such as “not only understands it, but can explain it” sounds more natural than two unrelated facts.
Other common variants include 不仅……而且…… and 不光……还……. 不仅 is neutral and frequent in writing; 不光 is more conversational. Their basic grammar is the same.
与其……不如……: rather than …, it is better to …
Use 与其 A,不如 B to compare two possible actions or states and present B as the better, more useful, or more realistic choice.
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| 与其 A | The less desirable option or situation |
| 不如 B | The preferred alternative |
For example, 与其担心,不如先做准备 means “Rather than worry, it would be better to prepare first.” The pattern itself expresses a judgment, so 不如 does more than simply contrast A and B.
When the subject is shared, it usually comes before 与其: 我们与其继续争论,不如冷静地谈一谈。 The subject can be omitted when it is clear from context: 与其等,不如走。 If the alternatives have different subjects, each clause can state its own subject, though such sentences are heavier: 与其我替你决定,不如你自己想清楚。
Do not reverse the logic: A is the rejected or less attractive option; B is the recommendation. Modal verbs such as 应该 (“should”) can appear, but they are often unnecessary because 不如 already conveys preference.
无论……都……: no matter …, in every case …
Use 无论 + open condition + 都/也 + result when the result remains true for every possibility. The “open condition” is commonly built with a question word. Here, the question word does not ask a real question; it represents all possible answers.
| Condition after 无论 | Meaning | Example frame |
|---|---|---|
| 谁 | no matter who / whoever | 无论谁……都…… |
| 什么 | no matter what / whatever | 无论什么……都…… |
| 哪儿 / 哪里 | no matter where / wherever | 无论去哪儿……都…… |
| 什么时候 | no matter when / whenever | 无论什么时候……都…… |
| 怎么 / 怎样 | no matter how | 无论怎么……都…… |
| 多 + adjective | no matter how + adjective | 无论多忙……都…… |
| A 还是 B | whether A or B | 无论坐车还是走路……都…… |
The result clause normally contains 都 (“in all cases”) or, less often, 也 (“even so”). English puts most of the burden on “no matter,” so English-speaking learners sometimes omit this second marker. In standard Chinese, keep it: 无论多晚,我都会等你。
不管……都/也…… has almost the same meaning and is especially common in speech. 无论 often sounds slightly more formal or carefully organized.
除了……以外……: except for or besides
除了 X 以外 identifies X as separate from a larger set. What follows tells you whether X is excluded from the statement or included as an additional member. 以外 is often optional in conversation, but it makes the boundary of the phrase explicit.
| Following marker | Typical reading | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 都 | except X; everyone/everything else | 除了小王以外,大家都到了。 |
| 还 / 也 | besides X; X plus something/someone else | 除了中文以外,她还学日语。 |
| 没有 | no one/nothing apart from X | 除了他以外,没有人知道。 |
The 都 sentence normally excludes X: everyone other than Xiao Wang arrived. The 还/也 sentence adds another item: she studies Japanese in addition to Chinese. Context matters, but these following words are strong interpretation cues.
之外 can replace 以外, especially in formal writing: 除了价格之外,我们还要考虑质量。 In many everyday sentences, speakers simply say 除了他,大家都来了.
Examples in Context
| Chinese | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 他不但会说中文,而且说得很好。 | He not only speaks Chinese, but speaks it well. | One shared subject before 不但 |
| 这家店不但价格合理,而且服务也很好。 | This shop not only has reasonable prices; its service is also excellent. | The second point is strengthened with 也 |
| 不但我没听懂,而且其他同事也有同样的问题。 | Not only did I not understand; the other colleagues had the same problem too. | Different subjects inside the two clauses |
| 与其等,不如走。 | Rather than wait, it is better to leave. | The subject is understood from context |
| 我们与其临时改变计划,不如现在把细节确认好。 | Rather than change the plan at the last minute, we should confirm the details now. | Shared subject before 与其 |
| 与其买一个便宜但不耐用的,不如多花一点儿钱。 | Rather than buy a cheap but short-lived one, it is better to spend a little more. | B is presented as the wiser choice |
| 无论多难,我都要试。 | No matter how hard it is, I will try. | 多 + adjective covers every degree |
| 无论你最后选择什么,我都支持你。 | Whatever you ultimately choose, I support you. | 什么 represents every possible choice |
| 无论坐地铁还是坐公交车,都要四十分钟左右。 | Whether you take the subway or the bus, it takes about forty minutes. | A 还是 B lists alternatives |
| 不管发生什么事,也别忘了给我打电话。 | Whatever happens, do not forget to call me. | Conversational 不管 with 也 |
| 除了他以外,都来了。 | Everyone came except him. | 都 gives the exclusion reading |
| 除了周末以外,我每天都去健身房。 | Except on weekends, I go to the gym every day. | A time period is excluded |
| 除了中文以外,她还会说韩语。 | Besides Chinese, she can also speak Korean. | 还 gives the addition reading |
| 除了经理以外,没有人能批准这笔费用。 | No one except the manager can approve this expense. | 没有人 marks a sole exception |
Common Mistakes
Putting a shared subject after 不但
- Wrong: 不但他会说中文,而且会说日语。
- Right: 他不但会说中文,而且会说日语。
- Why: Both abilities belong to 他, so the shared subject normally comes before 不但. The wrong order prepares the listener for a different subject in the second clause.
Leaving out the matching word after 无论
- Wrong: 无论天气多冷,我去跑步。
- Right: 无论天气多冷,我都去跑步。
- Why: 无论 opens an unrestricted condition, and 都 marks that the result applies in every case. English “no matter” does not have this two-part requirement, which makes the omission tempting.
Treating 与其……不如…… as a neutral choice
- Wrong: 与其坐火车,不如坐飞机,都可以。
- Right: 坐火车或者坐飞机都可以。
- Why: 与其……不如…… recommends B over A. If both choices are equally acceptable, use A 或者 B 都可以 instead.
Reversing the preferred option
- Wrong: 与其早点儿出发,不如迟到。 (when your advice is to avoid being late)
- Right: 与其迟到,不如早点儿出发。
- Why: The undesirable option goes after 与其; the preferred option goes after 不如.
Misreading 除了……以外 as always meaning “except”
- Wrong interpretation: 除了咖啡以外,他还点了茶。 = “He ordered tea instead of coffee.”
- Right interpretation: “Besides coffee, he also ordered tea.”
- Why: 还 makes this additive: coffee is included, and tea is added. With 都 or 没有, the same frame often marks an exception instead.
Joining unrelated facts with 不但……而且……
- Awkward: 他不但住在北京,而且我喜欢咖啡。
- Better: 他不但住在北京,而且还在北京工作。
- Why: The two parts need a clear shared topic and a meaningful progression. Grammatical linking words cannot create a logical relationship by themselves.
Usage Notes
In conversation, these pairs are flexible. Speakers often use 不光……还…… instead of 不但……而且……, 不管 instead of 无论, and omit 以外 after 除了. Full forms remain useful when the sentence is long, formal, or potentially ambiguous.
Punctuation reflects clause length rather than a rigid rule. A comma is normal between substantial paired clauses: 无论遇到什么困难,我们都不会放弃。 With short phrases, a comma may be unnecessary: 除了他以外都到了。 In polished writing, a comma often improves readability after the first half of 与其……不如…… and before the main result of 无论……都…….
Be careful with negation. In 不但没生气,而且还笑了, 没 negates the first event only: “not only did [the person] not get angry, they even laughed.” In 无论你去不去,我都不去, the first 不 belongs to the alternative 去不去, while the final 不 negates the result.
These structures organize information as well as grammar. 不但……而且…… creates momentum toward the second point. 与其……不如…… presents advice or an argument. 无论……都…… emphasizes consistency. 除了……以外…… defines a set and then either removes from it or adds to it. Choosing the right pattern therefore changes the speaker’s stance, not merely the translation.
Beyond the Basics
Parallel structure and balance
Longer, formal sentences sound best when A and B have parallel shapes. Compare 不但提高了效率,而且降低了成本: both halves contain a verb plus an object. Parallel wording makes the contrast easy to process. A badly unbalanced sentence may be understandable but stylistically weak.
With 与其……不如……, writers may repeat the subject or use matched verb phrases for rhetorical force: 与其被动等待机会,不如主动创造机会。 This is common in advice, speeches, and persuasive writing. A related, more emphatic form is 与其说 A,不如说 B: “rather than say A, it would be more accurate to say B.” For example, 与其说他生气了,不如说他有点儿失望 means “Rather than saying he was angry, it would be more accurate to say he was a little disappointed.” Here the speaker corrects a description rather than choosing an action.
无论 with indefinite meaning
Question words under 无论 have an indefinite meaning: 谁 means “whoever,” not “who?” This differs from a direct question such as 谁来了? The same pattern appears in 无论哪一本都可以 (“Any of the books is fine”) and 无论怎么解释,他都不相信 (“No matter how [you] explain it, he does not believe it”).
Do not combine 无论 with a complete 如果……就…… frame as though both were needed. 如果下雨,我们就取消 describes one condition: “If it rains, we will cancel.” 无论下不下雨,我们都出发 says the result is unchanged across both possibilities: “Whether it rains or not, we will set out.”
The scope of 除了
The phrase after 除了 can be a person, thing, time, place, action, or entire proposition:
- 除了周二以外 — except Tuesday
- 除了在家工作以外 — besides working from home
- 除了路上有点儿堵以外,一切都很顺利 — apart from some traffic on the way, everything went smoothly
In the last example, the exception softens a broad claim. This use is valuable in reports and evaluations: state an overall assessment with 都/一切, while isolating one limitation.
Combining patterns
Advanced Chinese often nests these structures, but clarity matters: 无论工作多忙,他不但坚持锻炼,而且还抽时间陪家人。 Here 无论……都…… sets the condition, while 不但……而且…… organizes two results. The 都 is omitted because the following correlative structure already makes the main clause clear; adding it—他都不但……—would sound awkward. Learn to combine patterns only after each one feels natural on its own.
Practice Tips
- Build four sentence frames. Write the patterns with blanks—不但 A,而且 B, 与其 A,不如 B, 无论 X,都 Y, and 除了 X 以外,都/还 Y—then complete each with details from your own life. Personal examples make the logical relationship easier to remember.
- Change one cue word at a time. Start with 除了小李以外,大家都来了, then replace 都 with 还 and adjust the rest of the sentence. Explain aloud why the meaning changes from exclusion to addition.
- Listen for both halves. When watching Chinese interviews or dramas, pause at 不但, 与其, 无论, or 除了 and predict the matching word. Check whether the speaker uses the full formal pair or a conversational variant such as 不光……还…… or 不管……都…….
