Dative Case in Russian

Дательный падеж

This article is part of the Russian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The dative case (дательный падеж) is used for indirect objects, age expressions, impersonal constructions, and several important prepositions. At the A2 level, mastering the dative expands your ability to describe giving and receiving, express needs and feelings, state ages, and use key constructions like нужно (need), можно (may), and нравится (like).

The dative answers the questions кому? (to whom?) and чему? (to what?). Its most intuitive use is the indirect object -- the recipient of an action: Я дал книгу другу (I gave the book to a friend). But Russian also uses the dative in many constructions where English uses different patterns, making it one of the cases with the most "surprising" uses for English speakers.

Impersonal constructions with the dative are particularly important: Мне холодно (I'm cold), Ему нужно работать (He needs to work), Нам весело (We're having fun). In these sentences, there is no nominative subject -- the person experiencing the state is in the dative case.

Common Mistakes

Using nominative for age

  • Wrong: Я двадцать лет.
  • Right: Мне двадцать лет.
  • Why: Age expressions require the dative for the person and follow the number + genitive pattern for the age.

Confusing dative and prepositional endings for feminine nouns

  • Wrong: The dative and prepositional often have the same endings for feminine nouns (-е), causing confusion about which case is being used
  • Right: Context and the governing verb/preposition determine the case: книге (dative after дать) vs. о книге (prepositional after о)
  • Why: While the forms may look identical, understanding which case each construction requires prevents errors.

Forgetting dative in impersonal constructions

  • Wrong: Я холодно. (nominative)
  • Right: Мне холодно. (dative)
  • Why: Russian impersonal constructions expressing states use the dative for the experiencer.

Practice Tips

  • Practice age expressions for everyone you know: Мне ... лет, маме ... лет, другу ... лет.
  • Drill impersonal constructions with different adjectives: Мне холодно/жарко/весело/грустно/интересно.
