Dative Case

Давальний Відмінок

Dative Case in Ukrainian

Overview

The dative case (давальний відмінок) marks the indirect object -- the recipient or beneficiary of an action. At the CEFR A2 level, the dative is essential for expressing to whom something is given, said, or shown. It also plays a central role in impersonal constructions that describe physical and emotional states.

The dative answers the questions "кому?" (to whom?) and "чому?" (to what?). Beyond indirect objects, it appears with specific verbs (допомагати, дякувати, заважати) and in impersonal expressions (мені холодно, їй сумно) that are extremely common in everyday Ukrainian.

Ukrainian has a distinctive feature in its dative system: masculine nouns offer two parallel endings (-ові/-еві and -у/-ю), with the -ові form traditionally preferred for people and the -у form for things.

How It Works

Dative Singular Endings

Gender/Type Ending Example
Masculine (people) -ові / -еві братові, учителеві
Masculine (things) -у / -ю столу, дощу
Feminine -а жінці, мамі
Feminine -я землі
Neuter -у / -ю місту, полю

Dative Plural: -ам / -ям for all genders

Key Uses

  1. Indirect object: Даю книгу братові. (I give the book to brother.)
  2. Verbs requiring dative: допомагати (help), дякувати (thank), заважати (bother)
  3. Impersonal states: Мені холодно. (I am cold.) Їй сумно. (She is sad.)
  4. Age expressions: Йому двадцять років. (He is twenty years old.)
  5. Modal impersonals: Мені треба йти. (I need to go.)

Common Mistakes

Using accusative instead of dative for indirect objects

  • Wrong: Даю книгу брата. (genitive/accusative)
  • Right: Даю книгу братові.
  • Why: The recipient of "give" is an indirect object requiring dative.

Forgetting consonant changes in feminine dative

  • Wrong: мамаі or книгаі
  • Right: мамі, книзі (г→з before -і)
  • Why: Before the dative -і ending, consonant alternations occur: к→ц, г→з, х→с.

Using nominative pronouns with impersonal expressions

  • Wrong: Я холодно. or Я треба.
  • Right: Мені холодно. Мені треба.
  • Why: Impersonal constructions require the dative pronoun form.

Usage Notes

The -ові/-еві endings for masculine dative are considered distinctly Ukrainian (Russian uses only -у). Using -ові for people is a good habit that marks your Ukrainian as natural and standard: братові, Іванові, вчителеві.

Impersonal dative constructions are extremely productive in Ukrainian. They express physical states (мені жарко -- I'm hot), emotional states (мені сумно -- I'm sad), and necessity (мені треба -- I need to). This pattern extends to many verbs: мені подобається (I like), мені здається (it seems to me).

Practice Tips

  1. Giving exercises: Practice "giving" different objects to different people, using correct dative forms.

  2. State descriptions: Describe how you and others feel using impersonal dative: мені весело, йому нудно, їй цікаво.

  3. Dative verb list: Memorize the common verbs that require dative and practice them in sentences.
