Genitive Case

Родительный падеж

Genitive Case in Russian

Overview

The genitive case (родительный падеж) is one of the most versatile and frequently used cases in Russian. At the A2 level, mastering the genitive is a major milestone because it serves numerous functions: expressing possession, absence, quantity, and origin, as well as following many common prepositions. You have already encountered it in the У + genitive construction and with numbers -- now it is time to learn the full system.

The genitive answers the questions кого? (of whom?), чего? (of what?), and откуда? (from where?). It appears after negation (нет + genitive), with quantity words (много, мало, сколько), in partitive constructions (стакан воды = a glass of water), and after numerous prepositions including из, от, до, без, для, у, около, and после.

Given its high frequency, the genitive case requires solid memorization of its endings for all three genders and both numbers. The genitive plural, in particular, has several patterns and many irregularities that require dedicated practice.

Common Mistakes

Using nominative after нет

  • Wrong: Нет время.
  • Right: Нет времени.
  • Why: Absence with нет always requires the genitive case.

Wrong genitive ending for feminine nouns

  • Wrong: книгы (using -ы after г)
  • Right: книги (using -и after г, к, х, ж, ш, щ, ч -- spelling rule)
  • Why: The spelling rule prohibits ы after these consonants; use и instead.

Confusing genitive with other cases after prepositions

  • Wrong: из Москва (nominative after из)
  • Right: из Москвы (genitive after из)
  • Why: Each preposition requires a specific case. Из, от, до, без, для all require genitive.

Forgetting fleeting vowels in masculine genitive

  • Wrong: отеца (from отец)
  • Right: отца (the е drops out)
  • Why: Some masculine nouns lose a vowel (е or о) in all cases except nominative: отец → отца, конец → конца.

Practice Tips

  • Practice possessive constructions daily: книга студента, дом друга, телефон мамы. This builds automatic genitive formation.
  • Drill the нет + genitive pattern by negating possession sentences: У меня есть... → У меня нет + genitive.
