Plural Case Endings in Russian
Overview
Once you know how to form nominative plurals and singular case endings, the next step at the A2 level is combining them: declining plural nouns through all six cases. Plural case endings are more uniform across genders than singular endings, which is good news, but the genitive plural is notoriously complex with multiple possible endings and many exceptions.
Plural case endings follow a more unified pattern than singular: the dative (-ам/-ям), instrumental (-ами/-ями), and prepositional (-ах/-ях) are consistent across all genders. The challenge lies primarily in the genitive plural, which has three main patterns (-ов/-ев, -ей, zero ending) with numerous special rules. The accusative plural follows the animate/inanimate distinction, equaling either the nominative (inanimate) or genitive (animate).
Mastering plural case endings is a significant achievement that enables full participation in complex Russian discourse. With all six cases in both singular and plural, you have the complete nominal declension system at your disposal.

Common Mistakes
Wrong genitive plural ending
- Wrong: книгов (masculine ending on feminine noun)
- Right: книг (zero ending for feminine -а nouns)
- Why: Feminine nouns ending in -а typically have a zero ending in genitive plural, not -ов.
Forgetting the inserted vowel
- Wrong: окн (missing inserted vowel)
- Right: окон
- Why: Some nouns insert о or е between final consonants in the genitive plural to make pronunciation possible.
Using nominative for animate accusative plural
- Wrong: Я вижу студенты. (nominative)
- Right: Я вижу студентов. (accusative = genitive for animate)
- Why: Animate plural nouns always take genitive endings in the accusative case.
Practice Tips
- Focus on the genitive plural first -- it is the most variable and most tested case form. Drill groups by pattern: -ов words, zero-ending words, -ей words.
- Practice with numbers, since they naturally require genitive plural: пять столов, шесть книг, семь окон, восемь дверей.
