Instrumental Case in Russian

Творительный падеж

Overview

The instrumental case (творительный падеж) is the fifth of six Russian cases and answers the questions кем? (by whom?) and чем? (by what/with what?). At the A2 level, learning the instrumental completes the core case system and enables you to express means, accompaniment, profession, and location -- all common in everyday speech.

The instrumental case gets its name from its primary function: indicating the instrument or means by which an action is performed (пишу ручкой = I write with a pen). But it extends well beyond this to express accompaniment with the preposition с (с другом = with a friend), profession after быть and работать (работает врачом = works as a doctor), and position with prepositions за, перед, над, под, and между.

The instrumental endings are distinctive and relatively easy to recognize: -ом/-ем for masculine/neuter and -ой/-ей for feminine. This makes it one of the more phonetically identifiable cases in connected speech.

How It Works

Instrumental Singular Endings

Gender/Type Nominative Instrumental Rule
Masculine (consonant) стол столом + ом
Masculine (-й) музей музеем -й → -ем
Masculine (-ь) словарь словарём -ь → -ём
Feminine (-а) книга книгой -а → -ой
Feminine (-я) неделя неделей -я → -ей
Feminine (-ь) дверь дверью -ь → -ью
Neuter (-о) окно окном -о → -ом
Neuter (-е) море морем -е → -ем

Common Mistakes

Forgetting instrumental for professions

  • Wrong: Он работает врач.
  • Right: Он работает врачом.
  • Why: After работать and быть (in past/future), professions go into the instrumental case.

Using с + nominative instead of instrumental

  • Wrong: Я иду с друг.
  • Right: Я иду с другом.
  • Why: The preposition с (with) requires the instrumental case.

Confusing -ом and -ой endings

  • Wrong: ручком (masculine ending on feminine noun)
  • Right: ручкой (feminine instrumental ending)
  • Why: Masculine/neuter use -ом/-ем; feminine uses -ой/-ей.

Practice Tips

  • Describe what tools you use daily: Я ем вилкой, пишу ручкой, режу ножом. This builds instrument vocabulary naturally.
  • Practice с + instrumental for people: с мамой, с другом, с учителем, с коллегами.
