Object Pronouns and Enclitic Forms in Persian

ضمایر مفعولی

Overview

When you want to say "he saw me" or "I told her" in Persian, you need object pronouns. Persian has two systems for this: the full pronoun forms used with the direct object marker را, and the short enclitic forms that attach to verbs or prepositions. At the A2 level, understanding both systems will make your Persian sound much more natural.

The full forms are straightforward — they use the regular personal pronouns with را: من را (me), تو را (you), او را (him/her). But in everyday speech, Persians overwhelmingly prefer the enclitic (attached) forms: -م (-am, me), -ت (-at, you), -ش (-ash, him/her). These tiny suffixes clip onto verbs and prepositions, creating fluid, compact speech.

Colloquial Persian goes even further, merging the full pronoun + را into contracted forms: من را becomes منو (mano), تو را becomes تورو (toro). These are essential for understanding spoken Persian, even if you start by using the more formal forms.

How It Works

Full object pronoun forms (with را):

Person Full Form Merged Form (colloquial)
me من را mara / مرا منو mano
you (inf.) تو را torā تورو toro
him/her او را urā اونو uno
us ما را mārā مارو māro
you (formal) شما را shomārā شمارو shomāro
them آن‌ها را ānhārā اوناروunāro

Enclitic object forms (attached to verbs/prepositions):

Person Suffix Example
me -م -am دیدم didam → not this! بهم گفت (he told me)
you (inf.) -ت -at دیدت didat / بهت گفتم (I told you)
him/her -ش -ash دیدش didash / بهش گفتم (I told him/her)
us -مان -emān / -مون -emun بهمان/بهمون گفت (he told us)
you (formal) -تان -etān / -تون -etun بهتان/بهتون گفتم (I told you)
them -شان -eshān / -شون -eshun بهشان/بهشون گفتم (I told them)

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
او من را دید. / او مرا دید. He/She saw me. Full form, formal
دیدمش. I saw him/her. Enclitic on verb
بهش گفتم. I told him/her. Enclitic on preposition
کتابت را آوردم. I brought your book. Possessive + را
دوستت دارم. I love you. Idiomatic enclitic
منو ببخش. Forgive me. Colloquial merged form
بهم زنگ بزن. Call me. Enclitic on به
صدات می‌کنم. I'll call you. Enclitic on noun
ولش کن! Leave him/her alone! Enclitic on verb stem
باهاش رفتم. I went with him/her. Enclitic on با

Common Mistakes

Mixing formal and colloquial in the same sentence

  • Wrong: او منو دید. (formal subject + colloquial object)
  • Right: Either او مرا دید (formal) or اون منو دید (colloquial)
  • Why: Maintain register consistency. Formal subject with colloquial object sounds mismatched.

Attaching enclitics to the wrong word

  • Wrong: من به گفتمش (putting enclitic randomly)
  • Right: من بهش گفتم (enclitic on the preposition)
  • Why: Object enclitics attach to the verb or to the preposition that governs the indirect object. Learn the natural attachment points.

Forgetting that enclitics replace را + pronoun

  • Wrong: او من رام دید (doubling the object marking)
  • Right: Either او مرا دید OR دیدم (enclitic)
  • Why: You use either the full form (pronoun + را) or the enclitic — never both at the same time.

Usage Notes

In spoken Tehran Persian, the enclitic forms are overwhelmingly preferred. The full pronoun + را construction is reserved for formal writing or when emphasis is needed. The merged colloquial forms (منو، تورو، etc.) are universal in everyday speech and are not considered sloppy — they are the standard spoken forms.

The enclitic -ش (ash) is particularly versatile, attaching to verbs (دیدمش), prepositions (بهش، باهاش، ازش), and nouns (اسمش). Learning to use -ش fluently is a major step toward natural-sounding Persian.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice converting formal to colloquial: من او را دیدم → دیدمش, من به او گفتم → بهش گفتم. This trains your ability to move between registers.
  2. Master the preposition + enclitic combinations: بهم, بهت, بهش (to me, to you, to him/her), ازم, ازت, ازش (from me, from you, from him/her), باهام, باهات, باهاش (with me, with you, with him/her).
  3. Use enclitics in everyday sentences: صداش کن (call him/her), ولش کن (leave it), ببینمش (let me see him/her). These short phrases appear constantly in Persian conversation.
