Modal Verbs in Persian
Overview
Modal verbs express ability, desire, necessity, and possibility. In Persian, the three key modals are توانستن (tavānestan, can/to be able), خواستن (khāstan, to want), and باید (bāyad, must). These are essential at the A2 level because they allow you to express what you can do, what you want to do, and what you must do.
A crucial feature of Persian modals is that they are followed by the subjunctive form of the main verb — not the infinitive. So "I can go" is میتوانم بروم (mitavānam beravam), where بروم is the subjunctive of رفتن. This modal + subjunctive pattern is central to Persian grammar and will accompany you through every level.
باید is unique among these three because it is invariable — it does not conjugate for person. Whether "I must" or "they must," the word is always just باید. The subject is indicated by the subjunctive verb that follows: باید بروم (I must go) vs باید بروند (they must go).
How It Works
توانستن (can/to be able) — present tense:
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| من | میتوانم | میتوانم بیایم (I can come) |
| تو | میتوانی | میتوانی بروی (you can go) |
| او | میتواند | میتواند بخواند (he/she can read) |
| ما | میتوانیم | میتوانیم ببینیم (we can see) |
| شما | میتوانید | میتوانید بنشینید (you can sit) |
| آنها | میتوانند | میتوانند بروند (they can go) |
خواستن (to want) — present tense:
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| من | میخواهم | میخواهم بروم (I want to go) |
| تو | میخواهی | میخواهی بیایی (you want to come) |
| او | میخواهد | میخواهد بخوابد (he/she wants to sleep) |
باید (must) — invariable:
- باید بروم (I must go)
- باید بروی (you must go)
- باید برود (he/she must go)
- نباید بروم (I must not go)

Common Mistakes
Using infinitive instead of subjunctive after modals
- Wrong: میخواهم رفتن (I want to go-infinitive)
- Right: میخواهم بروم (I want to go-subjunctive)
- Why: Persian modals require the subjunctive (ب + present stem), not the infinitive. This is different from English.
Conjugating باید
- Wrong: بایدم بروم (adding person to باید)
- Right: باید بروم
- Why: باید is invariable. It never changes. The person is shown by the subjunctive verb that follows.
Mismatching person between modal and subjunctive
- Wrong: میخواهم بروی (I want you-go)
- Right: میخواهم بروم (I want I-go = I want to go)
- Why: When the subject of wanting and going is the same person, both verbs must match. For different subjects, use که: میخواهم که بروی (I want you to go).
Usage Notes
In colloquial Persian, these modals contract significantly: میتوانم → میتونم (mitunam), میخواهم → میخوام (mikhām). The colloquial forms are what you will hear in everyday conversation. باید stays the same in both registers.
The modal شاید (shāyad, maybe/perhaps) is also invariable like باید and takes the subjunctive: شاید بیاید (maybe he/she will come). It expresses possibility rather than obligation.
Practice Tips
- Practice all three modals with the same verb: میتوانم بروم (I can go), میخواهم بروم (I want to go), باید بروم (I must go). This trains the modal + subjunctive pattern.
- Learn the colloquial contractions alongside the formal forms: میتونم/میتوانم, میخوام/میخواهم. Practice switching between them.
- Make sentences about your daily needs and abilities: باید کار کنم (I must work), میتونم فارسی حرف بزنم (I can speak Persian), میخوام غذا بخورم (I want to eat food).
