Simple Present Tense in Persian

Overview

The simple present tense in Persian expresses habitual actions, general truths, and states. It is one of the first tenses you need to master at the A1 level, and it will immediately expand what you can say — from describing your daily routine to talking about what people do for a living.

The formation follows a clear pattern: the prefix می (mi-) plus the present stem plus personal endings. The challenge lies in the present stems, which are often irregular and must be learned alongside each verb. For example, the verb رفتن (raftan, to go) has the present stem رو (rav), giving you می‌روم (miravam, I go).

Persian is an SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) language, so the verb comes at the end of the sentence. Combine this with the simple present, and you get natural sentences like من هر روز کار می‌کنم (man har ruz kār mikonam, I work every day).

How It Works

Formula: می (mi-) + present stem + personal ending

Person Ending Example with رفتن (to go, stem: رو)
من -م -am می‌روم miravam
تو -ی -i می‌روی miravi
او -د -ad می‌رود miravad
ما -یم -im می‌رویم miravim
شما -ید -id می‌روید miravid
آن‌ها -ند -and می‌روند miravand

Common verbs and their present stems:

Infinitive Meaning Present Stem
رفتن raftan to go رو rav
آمدن āmadan to come آ ā
خوردن khordan to eat خور khor
خواندن khāndan to read خوان khān
نوشتن neveshtan to write نویس nevis
گفتن goftan to say گو gu
دیدن didan to see بین bin
کردن kardan to do کن kon
دانستن dānestan to know دان dān
زدن zadan to hit زن zan

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the می prefix

  • Wrong: من روم (I go)
  • Right: من می‌روم
  • Why: The می prefix is required for the simple present tense. Without it, you get a subjunctive form (which has a different meaning).

Using the infinitive stem instead of the present stem

  • Wrong: من می‌رفتم (using past stem رفت for present)
  • Right: من می‌روم (using present stem رو)
  • Why: می + past stem = past imperfect (a different tense). The simple present requires the present stem.

Applying English word order

  • Wrong: من می‌خورم غذا (I eat food — SVO)
  • Right: من غذا می‌خورم (I food eat — SOV)
  • Why: Persian uses SOV word order. The verb always goes at the end.

Practice Tips

  1. Memorize the present stems of the 20 most common verbs. The stems are unpredictable, so flashcards are your best friend here.
  2. Describe your daily routine using the simple present: صبح بلند می‌شوم (I get up in the morning), صبحانه می‌خورم (I eat breakfast), به کار می‌روم (I go to work). This gives you a practical script to practice.
  3. Practice conjugating one new verb per day through all six persons. Write them out and say them aloud.
