Cleft and Emphatic Constructions in Persian

جمله‌های تأکیدی و شکافته

Overview

Cleft and emphatic constructions highlight a specific element in a sentence for focus or contrast. At the B2 level, these structures let you add rhetorical force to your Persian — emphasizing who did something, what was done, or contrasting alternatives. They are common in argumentation, storytelling, and formal discourse.

The main patterns include این...است که (it is...that), contrastive نه...بلکه (not...but rather), emphatic همین/همان (this very/that very), and emphatic خود (self). These constructions draw the listener's attention to the focused element and are powerful tools for persuasion and clarity.

How It Works

Construction Pattern Example
Cleft این X بود که + clause این من بودم که زنگ زدم (It was I who called)
Contrastive نه X بلکه Y نه پول بلکه عشق (not money but love)
Emphatic demonstrative همین/همان + noun همین کتاب را می‌خواهم (this very book)
Emphatic self خودِ + noun/pronoun خودِ او این کار را کرد (he himself did it)
Focus fronting Focused element first فارسی یاد می‌گیرم، نه عربی (Persian I'm learning, not Arabic)

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
این من بودم که زنگ زدم. It was I who called. Cleft for subject
نه پول بلکه عشق مهم است. Not money but love is important. Contrastive
همین کتاب را می‌خواهم. It's this very book I want. Emphatic demonstrative
خودِ او این کار را کرد. He himself did this. Self emphasis
فقط همین را بگو. Just say this (very thing). Emphasis
نه تنها رفت، بلکه برنگشت. Not only did he go, but he didn't return. Escalation
این‌ها بود که من گفتم. These were the things I said. Cleft plural
مشکل همین‌جاست. The problem is right here. Emphatic location
خودم می‌کنم، لازم نیست. I'll do it myself, no need. Self emphasis
همون که گفتم. Exactly what I said. Colloquial emphasis

Common Mistakes

Overusing cleft constructions

  • Wrong: Making every sentence a cleft (sounds dramatic)
  • Right: Reserve clefts for genuine emphasis or contrast
  • Why: Cleft constructions are marked — they signal special focus. Overuse dilutes their effect.

Confusing نه...بلکه with نه...نه

  • Wrong: Using نه...بلکه when meaning "neither...nor"
  • Right: نه...بلکه = "not X but Y" (replacement); نه...نه = "neither X nor Y" (both excluded)
  • Why: These are different logical operations. بلکه introduces what IS true; double نه excludes both.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice cleft sentences for emphasis: این من بودم که... (it was I who...), این کتاب بود که... (it was this book that...).
  2. Use نه...بلکه for arguments: نه سرعت بلکه دقت مهم‌تره (not speed but accuracy is more important).
  3. Practice همین/همان for precision: همین یکی (this exact one), همان روز (that very day).
