Complex Subordinating Conjunctions in Persian
حروف ربط وابستهساز
This article is part of the Persian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
At the B2 level, you need conjunctions that express more nuanced logical relationships: concession ("although"), condition ("provided that"), exception ("unless"), manner ("in such a way that"), and simultaneous action ("while"). Persian has a rich set of multi-word subordinating conjunctions that serve these purposes.
These conjunctions are typically compound phrases built around که (ke) or اینکه (inke). Many follow the pattern: preposition + اینکه — such as با اینکه (although), به شرطی که (provided that), and مگر اینکه (unless). Once you recognize this pattern, learning new conjunctions becomes predictable.
Mastering these conjunctions is essential for academic reading, formal writing, and sophisticated conversation. They allow you to build the complex, multi-clause sentences that characterize educated Persian discourse.
How It Works
| Conjunction | Pronunciation | Meaning | Mood of Clause |
|---|---|---|---|
| با اینکه | bā inke | although | Indicative |
| در حالی که | dar hāli ke | while | Indicative |
| به طوری که | be tori ke | in such a way that | Indicative |
| مگر اینکه | magar inke | unless | Subjunctive |
| به شرطی که | be sharti ke | provided that | Subjunctive |
| از آنجا که | az ānjā ke | since/given that | Indicative |
| به جای اینکه | be jā-ye inke | instead of | Subjunctive |
| علیرغم اینکه | alaraghm-e inke | despite the fact that | Indicative |
| تا زمانی که | tā zamāni ke | as long as | Indicative |

Common Mistakes
Using the wrong mood after the conjunction
- Wrong: مگر اینکه زودتر میآیی (indicative after مگر اینکه)
- Right: مگر اینکه زودتر بیایی (subjunctive)
- Why: Some conjunctions require the subjunctive (مگر اینکه, به شرطی که, به جای اینکه). Others take the indicative. Learning which mood each requires is essential.
Confusing با اینکه and چون
- Wrong: با اینکه باران آمد، در خانه ماندم (although = because?)
- Right: چون باران آمد، در خانه ماندم (because it rained, I stayed home)
- Why: با اینکه means "although" (concession — the result is unexpected). چون means "because" (reason — the result is expected).
Overcomplicating sentences
- Wrong: Stacking multiple complex conjunctions in one sentence
- Right: Use one per clause and build gradually
- Why: Even in formal Persian, clarity matters. One complex conjunction per sentence is usually enough.
Usage Notes
These conjunctions are markers of formal and educated Persian. In casual speech, simpler alternatives are preferred: ولی (but) instead of با اینکه (although), اگر نه (otherwise) instead of مگر اینکه (unless). Knowing both levels allows you to read formal texts while speaking naturally.
Practice Tips
- Learn the conjunctions in functional groups: concession (با اینکه, علیرغم اینکه), condition (به شرطی که, مگر اینکه), time (در حالی که, تا زمانی که). This makes them easier to recall.
- Read Persian newspaper editorials and highlight all subordinating conjunctions. Notice how they build arguments.
- Practice converting simple sentence pairs into complex ones: خسته بود. کار کرد. → با اینکه خسته بود، کار کرد.
