Eerste Conditionale in het Engels

Overzicht

De eerste conditionale (first conditional) gebruik je voor situaties die realistisch en mogelijk zijn in de toekomst. Je beschrijft een situatie waarbij iets waarschijnlijk zal gebeuren als een bepaalde voorwaarde wordt vervuld.

De structuur is: If + present simple, will + basisvorm. Let op: in de "if-zin" gebruik je de tegenwoordige tijd (present simple), niet "will" — ook al praat je over de toekomst. Dit is een veelgemaakte fout.

De "if-zin" en de hoofdzin kunnen van volgorde wisselen: If it rains, I'll stay home. = I'll stay home if it rains. Als de if-zin eerst komt, gebruik je een komma.

Variaties in de hoofdzin

Na "if + present simple" kun je ook andere modale werkwoorden gebruiken:

• If you're tired, you can go home.
• If it rains, we might cancel the event.
• If you finish early, you should let me know.

Veelgemaakte fouten

"Will" in de if-zin

• Fout: If it will rain, I'll stay home.
• Correct: If it rains, I'll stay home.
• Waarom: In de if-zin gebruik je de present simple, niet "will". De toekomstige betekenis zit al in de "if".

"Would" gebruiken in plaats van "will"

• Fout: If she calls, I would answer. (als je een realistische situatie bedoelt)
• Correct: If she calls, I will answer.
• Waarom: "Would" gebruik je in de tweede conditionale voor hypothetische situaties. De eerste conditionale gebruikt "will".

Komma vergeten

• Fout: If it rains we'll stay home.
• Correct: If it rains, we'll stay home.
• Waarom: Wanneer de if-zin vooraan staat, gebruik je een komma.

Oefentips

• Plannen voor de toekomst: Schrijf vijf zinnen over wat je zult doen onder bepaalde omstandigheden: "If the weather is good on Saturday, I'll go cycling."
• Waarschuwingen en adviezen: Schrijf waarschuwingen: "If you don't sleep enough, you'll be tired. If you eat too much sugar, you'll feel sick."
• Unless oefenen: Herschrijf "if not" zinnen met "unless": "If you don't hurry..." → "Unless you hurry..."
