Present Perfect (Perfet d'Indicatiu) in Catalan
Perfet d'Indicatiu
Overview
The present perfect in Catalan is formed with the auxiliary verb haver plus the past participle. It expresses actions that have happened recently or that have relevance to the present moment: He acabat la feina (I have finished the work). This tense is common at the A2 level and complements the periphrastic past.
The present perfect in Catalan functions similarly to the English present perfect ("I have done") but is used more in specific contexts: recent past, today's events, and situations where the result matters now. For more distant completed events, Catalan prefers the periphrastic past.
The past participle is formed differently for each conjugation class: -at for -ar verbs, -ut for -er/-re verbs, and -it for -ir verbs. Some common verbs have irregular past participles that must be memorized.

Common Mistakes
Using the wrong participle ending
- Wrong: He cantit. or He dormut.
- Right: He cantat. (cantar → cantat) / He dormit. (dormir → dormit)
- Why: Each conjugation class has its own participle ending: -at, -ut, -it. Don't mix them.
Confusing present perfect with periphrastic past
- Recent/relevant: Avui he comprat pa. (Today I bought bread — present perfect)
- Distant/narrative: Ahir vaig comprar pa. (Yesterday I bought bread — periphrastic past)
- Why: The present perfect is preferred for recent events or ongoing relevance. The periphrastic past is for completed past events, especially distant ones.
Forgetting irregular participles
- Wrong: He ferit or He feit (trying to say "I have done")
- Right: He fet.
- Why: Common verbs like fer, dir, veure, escriure have irregular participles that must be memorized.
Usage Notes
In Central Catalan (Barcelona area), the distinction between present perfect and periphrastic past is maintained: the present perfect for recent/relevant events, the periphrastic past for completed narrative events. However, in some dialects (especially Valencian), usage patterns may differ, with the simple past or periphrastic past covering more contexts.
Practice Tips
- Describe what you have done today using the present perfect: "Avui he esmorzat, he treballat, he parlat amb un amic..."
- Memorize the irregular past participles as a set: fet, dit, vist, escrit, obert, mort. Test yourself regularly.
- Practice the contrast: use the present perfect for "today" events and the periphrastic past for "yesterday" events.
