Weather and Seasons in Urdu
موسم اور قدرت
Overview
Weather and season vocabulary is practical CEFR A1 knowledge for daily conversation, travel planning, and understanding the cultural rhythm of South Asian life. Pakistan and North India experience distinct seasons that deeply influence daily life, festivals, and social patterns.
Weather expressions in Urdu often use impersonal constructions: بارش ہو رہی ہے (rain is happening = it is raining), گرمی ہے (heat is = it is hot). There is no equivalent of English "it" as a weather subject — the weather phenomenon itself is the subject.

Common Mistakes
Adding an "It" Subject
- Wrong: Looking for an Urdu equivalent of "it rains"
- Right: بارش ہوتی ہے (rain happens) — the weather phenomenon is the subject
- Why: Urdu weather expressions are subjectless or use the phenomenon as subject.
Confusing گرمی/سردی (Temperature vs Season)
- Wrong: Not recognizing dual meaning
- Right: گرمی = heat (sensation) AND summer (season); سردی = cold AND winter
- Why: Context determines whether the word refers to temperature or season.
Usage Notes
Weather is a universal conversation starter in Urdu, just as in English. Comments about the heat, rain, or pleasant weather are standard small talk. The monsoon season (برسات) has special cultural significance in South Asian literature, music, and social life.
