Present Continuous Tense in Urdu
Overview
The present continuous tense in Urdu expresses actions that are happening right now, at the moment of speaking. At the CEFR A1 level, this tense allows learners to describe ongoing activities and ask about what someone is currently doing.
The structure uses the verb stem followed by رہا/رہی/رہے (a progressive marker that agrees in gender and number) plus the present tense of ہونا as an auxiliary. For example, میں پڑھ رہا ہوں maiṅ paṛh rahā hūṅ means "I am reading" (male speaker).
This tense contrasts with the present habitual, which describes routine actions. Saying وہ پڑھتا ہے (he reads/studies regularly) is fundamentally different from وہ پڑھ رہا ہے (he is reading right now).

Common Mistakes
Using Habitual Instead of Continuous
- Wrong: میں ابھی کھاتا ہوں۔ (for "I am eating now")
- Right: میں ابھی کھا رہا ہوں۔
- Why: The habitual (تا) is for regular actions; the continuous (رہا) is for actions happening now.
Wrong Gender on رہا/رہی/رہے
- Wrong: وہ (لڑکی) پڑھ رہا ہے۔
- Right: وہ پڑھ رہی ہے۔
- Why: رہا must agree in gender with the subject: رہی for feminine.
Forgetting the Auxiliary
- Wrong: وہ کھا رہا۔ (no auxiliary)
- Right: وہ کھا رہا ہے۔
- Why: The present continuous requires the ہونا auxiliary to be complete (unlike negative habitual, which drops it).
Usage Notes
The present continuous is very common in everyday conversation, particularly when describing current activities, reporting live events, or asking what someone is doing. It is also used to describe temporary situations and actions in progress.
In spoken Urdu, this tense is sometimes used for near-future planned actions: میں کل جا رہا ہوں (I am going tomorrow), similar to English usage.
Practice Tips
- Describe what you see around you right now using the present continuous: the person sitting, the wind blowing, the clock ticking.
- Practice switching between habitual and continuous for the same verb to feel the difference.
- Role-play phone conversations where you ask and answer "What are you doing?"
