Present Continuous Tense in Turkish
Şimdiki Zaman
This article is part of the Turkish grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
The present continuous tense (şimdiki zaman) is the first verb tense most Turkish learners master, and for good reason — it is the most versatile and frequently used tense in everyday conversation. It describes actions happening right now, habitual actions, and even near-future plans. If you can only learn one Turkish tense, this should be it.
The present continuous is formed with the suffix -iyor, which is unique among Turkish suffixes because its vowels do not change for vowel harmony. The "i" and "o" in -iyor stay fixed regardless of the word they attach to. However, the personal endings that follow -iyor do follow standard patterns.
At the A1 level, this tense lets you describe what you are doing, ask what others are doing, and talk about your daily routines — the building blocks of basic conversation.
How It Works
Formation
The structure is: verb stem + -iyor + personal ending
To find the verb stem, remove the -mek/-mak infinitive ending:
- gelmek (to come) → gel-
- yapmak (to do) → yap-
Conjugation Table
| Person | Ending | Example (gelmek) | Example (yapmak) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ben | -iyorum | geliyorum | yapıyorum |
| Sen | -iyorsun | geliyorsun | yapıyorsun |
| O | -iyor | geliyor | yapıyor |
| Biz | -iyoruz | geliyoruz | yapıyoruz |
| Siz | -iyorsunuz | geliyorsunuz | yapıyorsunuz |
| Onlar | -iyorlar | geliyorlar | yapıyorlar |
Vowel Adjustment Before -iyor
When the verb stem ends in a vowel, that vowel is dropped and replaced by the "i" (or its harmonic variant) of -iyor:
| Verb | Stem | Before -iyor | Conjugated |
|---|---|---|---|
| beklemek (to wait) | bekle- | bekliyor | bekliyorum |
| okumak (to read) | oku- | okuyor | okuyorum |
| yemek (to eat) | ye- | yiyor | yiyorum |
| söylemek (to say) | söyle- | söylüyor | söylüyorum |
The buffer vowel before -yor follows four-way vowel harmony:
- After e, i → i (bekliyorum)
- After a, ı → ı (yapıyorum)
- After o, u → u (okuyorum)
- After ö, ü → ü (söylüyorum)
Negative Form
Insert -m before -iyor (the -me/-ma suffix drops its vowel):
| Person | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Ben | geliyorum | gelmiyorum |
| Sen | geliyorsun | gelmiyorsun |
| O | geliyor | gelmiyor |
| Biz | geliyoruz | gelmiyoruz |
| Siz | geliyorsunuz | gelmiyorsunuz |
| Onlar | geliyorlar | gelmiyorlar |
Question Form
Add the question particle mu/mü after -iyor (before the personal ending):
- Geliyor musun? (Are you coming?)
- Anlıyor musunuz? (Do you understand?)
- Çalışıyor mu? (Is he/she working?)
Examples in Context
| Turkish | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ne yapıyorsun? | What are you doing? | Most common question |
| Türkçe öğreniyorum. | I am learning Turkish. | Describing current activity |
| Yağmur yağıyor. | It is raining. | Weather |
| Nereye gidiyorsun? | Where are you going? | Direction question |
| Televizyon izliyorum. | I am watching television. | izle- → izliyor |
| Anlamıyorum. | I don't understand. | Negative — very useful! |
| Kahvaltı yapıyoruz. | We are having breakfast. | Daily routine |
| Bu akşam sinemaya gidiyoruz. | We are going to the cinema tonight. | Near future plan |
| Çocuklar parkta oynuyor. | The children are playing in the park. | Third person plural (also: oynuyorlar) |
| Beni duyuyor musun? | Can you hear me? | Question form |
Common Mistakes
Forgetting to Drop the Stem Vowel
- Wrong: okuyuyorum
- Right: okuyorum
- Why: When the stem ends in a vowel (oku-), the stem vowel merges with -iyor. You do not add an extra syllable.
Using Vowel Harmony on -iyor
- Wrong: gelüyor or gelıyor
- Right: geliyor
- Why: The -yor part of the suffix never changes. Only the buffer vowel before -yor follows harmony.
Wrong Negative Formation
- Wrong: geliyormuyorum or gelmeyiyorum
- Right: gelmiyorum
- Why: The negative -me/-ma loses its vowel before -iyor, becoming just -m-.
Mixing Up Question Particle Placement
- Wrong: Geliyor musunuz mu?
- Right: Geliyor musunuz?
- Why: The question particle is inserted once, between -iyor and the personal ending.
Practice Tips
Narrate your day. As you go through your daily routine, describe what you are doing in Turkish: "Kahve içiyorum" (I am drinking coffee), "Yürüyorum" (I am walking), "Çalışıyorum" (I am working).
Practice the negative early. "Anlamıyorum" (I don't understand) and "Bilmiyorum" (I don't know) are two of the most useful sentences for a beginner. Master these immediately.
Watch for the stem vowel rule. Collect verbs whose stems end in vowels (yemek, okumak, beklemek, söylemek) and practice their -iyor forms. This is where most mistakes happen.
