Passive Voice in Ukrainian

Пасивний Стан

Overview

Ukrainian has several ways to express passive meaning, and understanding them at the CEFR B1 level is important for reading formal texts, understanding news, and recognizing constructions that are common in written Ukrainian. The two main passive constructions are бути + passive participle (-ний/-тий) and the impersonal passive with -но/-то.

The impersonal passive (-но/-то) is a distinctly Ukrainian construction that has no direct parallel in English or Russian. It uses a special adverbial form of the passive participle with an unspecified agent: "Зроблено" (It was done / It has been done). This form is extremely common in official, journalistic, and everyday Ukrainian.

Active voice is generally preferred in spoken Ukrainian, but passive constructions are important in formal writing, news reporting, and bureaucratic language.

How It Works

Passive with бути + Participle

Tense Structure Example
Past був/була + -ний/-тий Лист був написаний. (The letter was written.)
Present -- (rare) Будинок будується. (reflexive passive)
Future буде + -ний/-тий Робота буде зроблена. (The work will be done.)

Impersonal Passive (-но/-то)

Participle -но/-то Form Example
написаний написано Це написано вчора.
зроблений зроблено Зроблено! (Done!)
відкритий відкрито Магазин відкрито.
побудований побудовано Місто побудовано давно.

Reflexive Passive (-ся)

Some passive meanings are expressed with reflexive verbs:

  • Будинок будується. (The building is being built.)
  • Тут говорять українською. (Ukrainian is spoken here. -- impersonal active)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Лист був написаний. The letter was written. Бути + participle
Будинок будується. The house is being built. Reflexive passive
Це зроблено вчора. This was done yesterday. -но form
Тут говорять українською. Ukrainian is spoken here. Impersonal active
Магазин відкрито. The store is open. -но form, state
Робота буде завершена. The work will be completed. Future passive
Проблему вирішено. The problem has been solved. -но, completed
Книга була написана у 2020. The book was written in 2020. Full passive
Закон прийнято. The law has been passed. -но, official
Двері зачинені. The doors are closed. Participle as adjective

Common Mistakes

Agreeing -но/-то with the subject

  • Wrong: Книга написана вчора. (when using -но form)
  • Right: Книгу написано вчора. (object in accusative, -но is impersonal)
  • Why: The -но/-то construction is impersonal -- the logical object stays in accusative, and the verb form does not agree.

Overusing passive in speech

  • Wrong: Constant passive constructions in conversation.
  • Right: Use active voice in speech; reserve passive for writing and formal contexts.
  • Why: Excessive passive voice sounds unnatural in spoken Ukrainian.

Confusing participle and -но form

  • Wrong: Проблема вирішена. when meaning the action just happened.
  • Right: Проблему вирішено. (action focus) or Проблема вирішена. (state focus)
  • Why: -но/-то emphasizes the completed action; the participle as adjective emphasizes the resulting state.

Usage Notes

The -но/-то form is one of the most distinctive features of Ukrainian grammar. It is preferred in news headlines, official announcements, and concise statements: "Прийнято рішення" (A decision has been made), "Підписано угоду" (An agreement has been signed).

Unlike Russian, which heavily uses reflexive passives, Ukrainian strongly favors the -но/-то construction for impersonal passive meaning.

Practice Tips

  1. News headline reading: Read Ukrainian news headlines and identify -но/-то constructions.

  2. Active-to-passive conversion: Transform active sentences into both participle passive and -но/-то passive.

  3. State vs action: Practice distinguishing "Двері відчинені" (state: doors are open) from "Двері відчинено" (action: doors have been opened).
