Basic Prepositions in Thai

คำบุพบท

Overview

Prepositions are essential for expressing location, direction, and spatial relationships in Thai. Known as คำบุพบท [kham bùppabòt] in Thai, these words let you describe where things are, where you are going, and how objects relate to each other in space. This is a foundational topic at the CEFR A1 (beginner) level.

The most common Thai prepositions include ที่ (at/in), บน (on), ใน (in), ใต้ (under), ข้าง (beside), หน้า (in front of), and หลัง (behind). Unlike English, Thai prepositions are relatively straightforward -- each one maps fairly closely to a single spatial meaning, and there are fewer idiomatic preposition uses to memorize.

One important difference from English is that Thai location expressions often use the verb อยู่ (to be located) together with a preposition: อยู่ที่บ้าน (am at home), อยู่บนโต๊ะ (is on the table). Learning to pair อยู่ with prepositions is key to natural-sounding location statements.

How It Works

Core Prepositions

Thai Romanization Meaning Example
ที่ thîi at, in, on (general location) อยู่ที่บ้าน (at home)
บน bon on, on top of บนโต๊ะ (on the table)
ใน nai in, inside ในห้อง (in the room)
ใต้ tâi under, below ใต้โต๊ะ (under the table)
ข้าง khâang beside, next to ข้างบ้าน (next to the house)
หน้า nâa in front of หน้าร้าน (in front of the shop)
หลัง lǎng behind หลังบ้าน (behind the house)

Location Pattern

Pattern Usage Example
อยู่ + preposition + place Stating location อยู่บนโต๊ะ (is on the table)
ไป + preposition + place Going to ไปที่ตลาด (go to the market)
มา + preposition + place Coming from มาจากบ้าน (come from home)

Examples in Context

Thai English Note
อยู่ที่บ้าน at home
บนโต๊ะ on the table
ในห้อง in the room
หน้าร้าน in front of the shop
แมวอยู่ใต้เตียง The cat is under the bed. ใต้ = under
เขานั่งข้างผม He/she sits beside me. ข้าง = beside
ร้านอยู่หลังธนาคาร The shop is behind the bank. หลัง = behind
กุญแจอยู่บนโต๊ะ The keys are on the table. บน = on

Common Mistakes

Confusing ที่ and ใน

  • Wrong: ผมอยู่ในกรุงเทพ (when meaning general location)
  • Right: ผมอยู่ที่กรุงเทพ
  • Why: ที่ is the general location marker. ใน (in/inside) implies being enclosed within something. For cities and general locations, use ที่.

Omitting อยู่ in location statements

  • Wrong: แมวบนโต๊ะ (the cat on the table)
  • Right: แมวอยู่บนโต๊ะ (the cat is on the table)
  • Why: Thai uses the verb อยู่ (to be located) to connect the subject with its location. Without it, the phrase sounds incomplete.

Using English preposition logic

  • Wrong: ผมอยู่ที่ในห้อง (doubling prepositions)
  • Right: ผมอยู่ในห้อง
  • Why: Thai prepositions do not stack the way English sometimes does. Choose the most specific preposition for your meaning.

Usage Notes

At the beginner level, focus on using basic prepositions patterns in their standard polite form. Thai speakers will appreciate your effort to use correct grammar, even if your pronunciation is not perfect. In casual settings among friends, you may hear shortened or simplified versions of these patterns, but as a learner it is best to stick with the complete forms until you develop a strong intuitive feel for when shortcuts are appropriate.

Practice Tips

  1. Start with the most common patterns. Focus on the examples marked as core patterns above. These cover the majority of everyday situations where you need basic prepositions.
  2. Practice in real contexts. Use these patterns when ordering food, giving directions, or describing your daily routine. Real-world practice builds lasting memory.
  3. Listen for these patterns in Thai media. Watch Thai dramas or listen to Thai podcasts and try to catch instances of basic prepositions being used naturally.
