มี (to have/there is) in Thai

คำว่า มี

This article is part of the Thai grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The word มี (mii) is one of the most versatile and frequently used words in Thai. It serves double duty as both "to have" (possession) and "there is/there are" (existence). This dual function makes it an essential building block at the CEFR A1 level, appearing in countless everyday expressions.

Unlike English, which uses different constructions for "I have a car" and "there is a car," Thai uses มี for both. The distinction is made through context and word order: when a subject precedes มี, it expresses possession; when มี begins the clause, it expresses existence.

มี does not conjugate. Like all Thai verbs, it remains unchanged regardless of tense, person, or number. Negation is straightforward with ไม่มี (mai mii, "don't have" or "there isn't").

How It Works

Possession: Subject + มี + Object

  • ผมมีรถ (phom mii rot) — I have a car.
  • เขามีลูกสองคน (khao mii luuk song khon) — He/She has two children.

Existence: มี + Noun (+ location)

  • มีคนอยู่ไหม (mii khon yuu mai) — Is anyone there?
  • มีร้านอาหารใกล้ๆ (mii raan aahaan klai klai) — There is a restaurant nearby.

Negation

Positive Negative Meaning
มี ไม่มี don't have / there isn't
มีเงิน ไม่มีเงิน have money / don't have money
มีปัญหา ไม่มีปัญหา there is a problem / no problem

Question Forms

  • มี...ไหม (mii...mai) — Is there...? / Do you have...?
  • มีอะไร (mii arai) — What is there? / What do you have?
  • มีเท่าไหร่ (mii thao rai) — How much/many is there?

Common Mistakes

Using มี for "there is" with the wrong word order

  • Wrong: คนมี in an existential sense
  • Right: มีคน (There is a person)
  • Why: For existence, มี comes first. Subject + มี expresses possession, not existence.

Forgetting ไม่มี as a complete response

  • Wrong: Using just ไม่ to answer "มีไหม"
  • Right: ไม่มี (don't have / there isn't)
  • Why: ไม่มี is the standard negative response to มี-questions. Just ไม่ sounds incomplete.

Confusing มี with เป็น for abstract states

  • Wrong: ผมเป็นความสุข (I am happiness)
  • Right: ผมมีความสุข (I have happiness / I am happy)
  • Why: Thai expresses many states as "having" an abstract noun rather than "being" something.

Usage Notes

มี is used identically across all registers. The expression ไม่มีปัญหา (no problem) is one of the most common phrases in Thai. In formal or written Thai, มี is sometimes combined with more elaborate noun phrases but the structure remains the same. At A1-A2 level, mastering มี opens the door to expressing possession, existence, and many idiomatic phrases.

Practice Tips

  • Practice both functions separately. Make five possession sentences and five existence sentences to cement the difference in word order.
  • Learn common มี expressions as chunks. Phrases like ไม่มีปัญหา, มีความสุข, and ไม่มีเวลา are so frequent that memorizing them as fixed phrases accelerates fluency.
  • Use มี...ไหม for daily questions. Practice asking "Is there...?" questions about your surroundings to build the habit naturally.
