Complex Sentence Structures in Russian

Сложные предложения

Overview

At the B2 level, moving beyond simple subordination to advanced correlative and multi-clause structures is essential for expressing sophisticated ideas, making arguments, and engaging with formal or literary Russian. These constructions allow you to express proportional relationships, alternatives, exclusions, and parallel contrasts within a single sentence.

Russian has several distinctive complex patterns that differ from English. The correlative чем...тем (the more...the more) uses comparative forms in both clauses. The alternating то...то (now...now) describes shifting states. The emphatic не только...но и (not only...but also) strengthens assertions. These structures are common in journalism, academic writing, and educated speech.

Mastering these patterns significantly elevates the sophistication of your Russian and enables you to follow complex arguments in texts and discussions that would otherwise be opaque.

How It Works

Correlative Constructions

Pattern Meaning Example
Чем + comp, тем + comp The more...the more Чем больше, тем лучше.
Тем + comp, что All the more because Тем лучше, что он пришёл.

Alternating Constructions

Pattern Meaning Example
То...то Now...now То дождь, то снег.
Ни...ни Neither...nor Ни рыба ни мясо.

Emphatic/Additive

Pattern Meaning Example
Не только...но и Not only...but also Не только он, но и она.
Не то что...а Not that...but Не то что помочь, он даже не пришёл.
Как...так и Both...and Как студенты, так и преподаватели.

Common Mistakes

Wrong word order in чем...тем

  • Wrong: Больше чем, лучше тем.
  • Right: Чем больше, тем лучше.
  • Why: Чем precedes the first comparative, тем precedes the second. This order is fixed.

Confusing то...то with то ли...то ли

  • Wrong: Using them interchangeably
  • Right: То...то = alternating states (now this, now that). То ли...то ли = uncertainty (either this or that, not sure).
  • Why: The presence of ли adds doubt/uncertainty to the construction.

Missing но и after не только

  • Wrong: Не только он, и она пришла.
  • Right: Не только он, но и она пришла.
  • Why: The full construction requires но и (but also), not just и.

Practice Tips

  • Practice чем...тем with different comparatives: Чем больше/раньше/лучше, тем лучше/быстрее/интереснее.
  • Read opinion articles and identify complex sentence patterns -- they are very common in argumentative writing.
