Concessive Clauses in Russian

Overview

Concessive clauses express "although," "despite," or "no matter how" -- situations where a result occurs contrary to an expected obstacle. At the B2 level, mastering concessive constructions is important for argumentation, storytelling, and expressing nuanced relationships between ideas.

Russian offers several concessive constructions of increasing formality: хотя (although) is the most basic and versatile, несмотря на то что (despite the fact that) is more formal, and как ни / сколько ни (no matter how/how much) express emphatic concession. Each has its own structure and register.

The как ни and сколько ни patterns are particularly distinctive to Russian: they combine a question word with ни and require не before the main verb. This creates emphatic concessive meaning that English can only approximate with "no matter how."

How It Works

Хотя (Although)

The most common and versatile concessive conjunction:

  • Хотя он устал, он продолжал работать. (Although he was tired, he continued working.)
  • Хотя and can appear in either clause position.

Несмотря на + Accusative (Despite)

With a noun: Несмотря на дождь, мы пошли гулять. (Despite the rain, we went for a walk.) With a clause: Несмотря на то что шёл дождь, мы пошли гулять.

Как ни / Сколько ни (No matter how)

Pattern Example Meaning
Как ни + verb Как ни старался, не смог. No matter how hard I tried...
Сколько ни + verb Сколько ни звонил, никто не отвечал. No matter how much I called...
Что ни + verb Что ни делай, всё бесполезно. Whatever you do, it's useless.
Куда ни + verb Куда ни посмотришь, везде красиво. Wherever you look, it's beautiful.

Common Mistakes

Confusing хотя and хотя бы

  • Wrong: Using хотя for "at least" or хотя бы for "although"
  • Right: Хотя = although. Хотя бы = at least. Different meanings entirely.
  • Why: These are distinct constructions despite sharing the same root word.

Missing не in как ни clauses

  • Wrong: Как ни старался, смог.
  • Right: Как ни старался, не смог.
  • Why: The main clause in как ни/сколько ни constructions typically contains negation (the action was unsuccessful despite effort).

Using несмотря на with wrong case

  • Wrong: Несмотря на дождя (genitive)
  • Right: Несмотря на дождь (accusative)
  • Why: Несмотря на takes the accusative case, not genitive.

Practice Tips

  • Practice converting simple sentences with "but" into concessive constructions: Он устал, но работал → Хотя он устал, он работал.
  • Use как ни to describe situations where effort didn't help: Как ни пытался, как ни старался, сколько ни работал...
