Real and Unreal Conditionals in Russian

Overview

At the B2 level, distinguishing between real and unreal conditional sentences is essential for expressing hypotheses, giving advice, discussing alternative scenarios, and engaging in abstract reasoning. Russian has a clear structural distinction between conditionals that describe possible situations and those that describe counterfactual ones.

Real conditionals use если + present/future tense and describe situations that may actually happen. Unreal conditionals use если бы + past tense and describe situations that are contrary to fact -- either in the present or the past. Unlike English, which uses different forms for present and past counterfactuals, Russian uses the same structure (если бы + past) for both.

This simplicity of form means that context determines the time reference. "Если бы я знал" can mean either "If I knew (now)" or "If I had known (then)" depending on the surrounding context. Additional time markers (сейчас, тогда) can disambiguate when needed.

How It Works

Real Conditionals

Если + present/future, ... future/present

Structure Example
если + future, future Если будет время, я приду.
если + present, imperative Если хочешь, приходи.
если + future, future Если он позвонит, скажи ему.

Unreal Conditionals

Если бы + past, ... бы + past

Type Example Meaning
Present unreal Если бы я знал, я бы сказал. If I knew (now), I would say.
Past unreal Если бы я тогда знал, я бы сказал. If I had known (then), I would have said.

Formal/Literary Variant

Будь (imperative of быть) can replace если бы:

  • Будь я богат, я бы путешествовал. (Were I rich, I would travel.)
  • Знай я это раньше... (Had I known this earlier...)

Mixed Conditionals

Past condition → present result:

  • Если бы я выучил русский тогда, я бы сейчас говорил свободно. (If I had learned Russian then, I would speak freely now.)

Examples in Context

Russian English Note
Если будет время, я приду. If there's time, I'll come. Real, future
Если бы я знал, я бы сказал. If I knew, I would say. Present unreal
Если бы я тогда знал... If I had known then... Past unreal
Будь я богат, я бы путешествовал. Were I rich, I would travel. Formal unreal
Если хочешь, приходи. If you want, come. Real, present
Если бы не дождь, мы бы пошли. If not for the rain, we would go. Present unreal
Если он позвонит, я скажу. If he calls, I'll tell him. Real, future
Если бы я мог, я бы помог. If I could, I would help. Present unreal
Знай я это раньше... Had I known this earlier... Literary variant
Что бы ты сделал на моём месте? What would you do in my place? Unreal question

Common Mistakes

Using бы with present/future tense verbs

  • Wrong: Если бы я знаю...
  • Right: Если бы я знал...
  • Why: Бы always combines with past tense forms, never with present or future.

Forgetting бы in the result clause

  • Wrong: Если бы я знал, я сказал.
  • Right: Если бы я знал, я бы сказал.
  • Why: Both clauses of an unreal conditional typically need бы.

Not distinguishing real from unreal

  • Wrong: Если бы он придёт... (mixing real and unreal)
  • Right: Если он придёт... (real) or Если бы он пришёл... (unreal)
  • Why: Real conditionals use present/future tense without бы; unreal conditionals use past tense with бы.

Practice Tips

  • Create pairs of real and unreal conditionals about the same topic: Если я поеду в Россию, я буду говорить по-русски (real) / Если бы я поехал в Россию, я бы говорил по-русски (unreal).
  • Practice the formal будь variant for key situations: Будь я на твоём месте..., Знай я об этом раньше...
