Wishes and Hopes in Indonesian
Harapan dan Keinginan
Overview
Indonesian has several ways to express wishes, hopes, and desires, ranging from realistic hopes to impossible fantasies. Semoga (hope/may) and mudah-mudahan (hopefully) express realistic hopes. Andai/andaikan (if only) and seandainya (suppose/if only) express counterfactual wishes — things you wish were true but are not.
These expressions are important in daily Indonesian, from wishing someone well (Semoga sehat selalu — May you always be healthy) to expressing regret about the past (Seandainya saya tahu — If only I had known).

Common Mistakes
Confusing semoga and seandainya
- Wrong: Using semoga for impossible wishes
- Right: Semoga for real hopes; seandainya for counterfactual wishes
- Why: Semoga expresses genuine hope for something possible. Seandainya expresses a wish about something that is not real.
Forgetting that Indonesian does not change verb forms for wishes
- Wrong: Looking for subjunctive verb forms
- Right: Use regular verbs with wish words: Andai saya punya uang. (not a special verb form)
- Why: Indonesian does not have a subjunctive mood. The wish/hope word itself carries the hypothetical meaning.
Using semoga too casually
- Wrong: Overusing semoga in casual situations
- Right: In casual speech, mudah-mudahan or moga-moga (informal shortening) is often more natural
- Why: Semoga has a slightly formal or prayerful tone. Mudah-mudahan is more conversational.
Usage Notes
Semoga is deeply embedded in Indonesian culture and is used in formal blessings, prayers, and greetings. It often appears in text messages and social media as a well-wish. Mudah-mudahan is its more conversational equivalent. Both are positive — they express hope for good outcomes. For expressing regret or impossible wishes, seandainya and andai are the go-to words, and they carry an emotional tone of longing or wistfulness.
Practice Tips
- Practice well-wishing: Semoga sehat, semoga sukses, semoga bahagia. These are phrases you will use frequently in Indonesian social interactions.
- Express regrets using seandainya: Seandainya saya belajar lebih keras. Seandainya saya datang lebih awal.
