Prefix pe(N)- (Nouns) in Indonesian

Awalan pe(N)-

Overview

The prefix pe(N)- is the noun-forming counterpart of the verb prefix me(N)-. It creates agent nouns (the person who does the action) and sometimes instrument nouns. Just as me(N)- follows nasal assimilation rules, pe(N)- follows the same patterns: penulis (writer, from tulis), pembaca (reader, from baca), pengemudi (driver, from kemudi).

This prefix is extremely productive in Indonesian. Once you know the me(N)- nasal rules, you automatically know the pe(N)- rules, because they use the same consonant changes. Understanding pe(N)- unlocks a vast number of Indonesian nouns.

How It Works

Nasal Assimilation (same as me(N)-)

Root starts with Prefix becomes Example
p pem- (p drops) pukul → pemukul (striker/bat)
b pem- baca → pembaca (reader)
t pen- (t drops) tulis → penulis (writer)
d pen- dengar → pendengar (listener)
c pen- cari → pencari (seeker)
k peng- (k drops) kemudi → pengemudi (driver)
g peng- gali → penggali (digger)
vowel peng- ajar → pengajar (teacher)
s peny- (s drops) siram → penyiram (waterer/sprinkler)
l, m, n, r pe- layan → pelayan (servant)

Common Mistakes

Using me(N)- rules but forgetting they apply to pe(N)- too

  • Wrong: petulis for "writer"
  • Right: penulis (t drops, just like in men- → menulis)
  • Why: Pe(N)- follows exactly the same nasal assimilation as me(N)-.

Confusing pe(N)- agent nouns with me(N)- verbs

  • Wrong: Thinking pembaca is a verb
  • Right: pembaca is a noun (reader). The verb is membaca (to read).
  • Why: Pe(N)- creates nouns; me(N)- creates verbs. The nasal patterns are the same but the prefixes differ.

Creating pe(N)- nouns from ber- verbs

  • Wrong: pebicara for "speaker"
  • Right: pembicara (from bicara, the root)
  • Why: Pe(N)- attaches to the root, not to the prefixed verb form.

Usage Notes

Pe(N)- nouns are used across all registers of Indonesian. They are the standard way to refer to people by their occupation or role. In formal Indonesian, these nouns are preferred over informal descriptions. For example, penulis (writer) is more formal and precise than orang yang menulis (person who writes).

Practice Tips

  1. For every me(N)- verb you know, create the corresponding pe(N)- noun: membaca → pembaca, menulis → penulis, mengajar → pengajar. This reinforces both the verb and noun forms.
  2. Describe people's occupations using pe(N)- nouns: Dia seorang penyanyi. Ibu saya seorang pengajar. Kakak saya seorang pengemudi.
