Conjunctions in Indonesian

Konjungsi

Overview

At the B2 level, you will expand your repertoire of conjunctions beyond the basics, learning formal and nuanced connectors that enable sophisticated argumentation. Indonesian has a rich set of conjunctions for expressing contrast, addition, condition, and concession that are essential for academic writing, formal discussion, and complex narratives.

This article focuses on the more advanced connectors that build upon the basic conjunctions (dan, atau, tetapi, karena) you learned at the A1 level. These include namun (however), selain itu (besides), meskipun...tetap (although...still), and other formal linking words.

Common Mistakes

Mixing register levels

  • Wrong: Using namun in casual conversation
  • Right: Use tapi in speech, namun in formal writing
  • Why: Register consistency matters. Mixing casual and formal connectors sounds unnatural.

Overusing dan for everything

  • Wrong: Dan dia pintar dan dia rajin dan dia baik hati.
  • Right: Dia pintar, rajin, dan baik hati. or Dia bukan hanya pintar, tetapi juga rajin.
  • Why: Varying connectors makes writing more engaging and precise.

Using sebab and karena inconsistently

  • Wrong: Worrying about the difference between sebab and karena
  • Right: They are largely interchangeable; karena is more common, sebab is slightly more formal
  • Why: Both mean "because." Sebab appears more in formal/literary contexts.

Usage Notes

In formal Indonesian writing, varying your conjunctions is a sign of good style. Use namun and akan tetapi instead of always using tapi. Selain itu and di samping itu are essential transitional phrases in essays and reports. The pair bukan hanya...tetapi juga (not only...but also) is particularly useful for building sophisticated arguments.

Practice Tips

  1. Rewrite casual sentences using formal conjunctions: Tapi saya tidak mau → Namun, saya tidak menginginkan hal itu.
  2. Practice essay-style paragraphs using varied conjunctions: start with a point, add with selain itu, contrast with namun, and conclude with oleh karena itu.
