Complex Sentence Structures in Indonesian

Overview

At the B2 level, you should be comfortable constructing multi-clause sentences that combine cause, condition, concession, and result. Indonesian formal writing relies heavily on these complex patterns: karena...maka (because...then), kalau...maka (if...then), and walaupun...tetapi (although...but).

These structures are the backbone of academic essays, formal letters, news articles, and persuasive writing. Mastering them will enable you to express sophisticated thoughts with precision and clarity.

How It Works

Common Multi-Clause Patterns

Pattern Example English
Karena + cause, maka + result Karena hujan, maka saya terlambat. Because it rained, I arrived late.
Kalau + condition, maka + result Kalau ada waktu, maka pergilah. If there is time, then go.
Walaupun + concession, tetapi + contrast Walaupun miskin, tetapi bahagia. Although poor, still happy.
Bukan hanya + A, tetapi juga + B Bukan hanya cantik, tetapi juga cerdas. Not only beautiful but also smart.

Common Mistakes

Overusing maka in casual speech

  • Wrong: Kalau lapar, maka makan saja.
  • Right: Kalau lapar, makan saja. — maka is optional and formal
  • Why: In casual speech, maka sounds stiff. Reserve it for formal writing.

Forgetting matching pairs

  • Wrong: Walaupun...dan... (although...and...)
  • Right: Walaupun...tetapi/namun... (although...but/however)
  • Why: Concessive patterns require contrasting connectors, not additive ones.

Creating run-on sentences

  • Wrong: Chaining five or more clauses without clear structure
  • Right: Limit complex sentences to two or three clauses for clarity
  • Why: Even in formal Indonesian, excessively long sentences lose clarity.

Usage Notes

Multi-clause sentences are characteristic of formal Indonesian writing. Academic papers, legal documents, and official letters frequently use patterns like berdasarkan...maka, mengingat...oleh karena itu, and sehubungan dengan...dengan ini. In spoken Indonesian, simpler two-clause structures are preferred. The ability to construct and parse these complex sentences is essential for reading Indonesian newspapers, academic texts, and official documents.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice combining simple sentences into complex ones: Hujan. Saya terlambat.Karena hujan, maka saya terlambat.
  2. Read Indonesian editorials or opinion pieces and analyze the sentence structures. Identify the connectors and how clauses relate to each other.
