Circumfixes in Indonesian
Konfiks
Overview
Circumfixes are paired affixes that attach simultaneously to the beginning and end of a root word. Indonesian has several productive circumfixes: ke-...-an creates abstract nouns and states, pe(N)-...-an creates process nouns, and per-...-an creates formal/institutional nouns. These are among the most sophisticated word-formation tools in Indonesian.
Understanding circumfixes is a major step toward advanced Indonesian. They allow you to form abstract concepts, describe processes, and name institutions — vocabulary that is essential for academic, professional, and literary contexts.

Common Mistakes
Confusing pe(N)-...-an with ke-...-an
- Wrong: Using them interchangeably
- Right: pe(N)-...-an for processes (pembangunan = development process); ke-...-an for states/qualities (kebahagiaan = happiness)
- Why: They create different types of nouns. The first is about actions/processes, the second about qualities/states.
Forgetting nasal assimilation in pe(N)-...-an
- Wrong: petulisan for "writing process"
- Right: penulisan (t drops, same as in me(N)-)
- Why: Pe(N)-...-an follows the same nasal rules as me(N)- and pe(N)-.
Treating circumfixed nouns as informal
- Wrong: Avoiding these words in casual speech
- Right: Many circumfixed nouns (kesehatan, pendidikan, pemerintahan) are used at all levels
- Why: While the formation is complex, many of these words are common everyday vocabulary.
Usage Notes
Circumfixed nouns are the standard way to express abstract concepts in Indonesian. Pendidikan (education), kesehatan (health), pemerintahan (government), and pembangunan (development) are among the most frequently used nouns in formal and semi-formal Indonesian. These words appear in news, academic writing, daily conversation, and government communications. Understanding their formation helps you parse unfamiliar circumfixed words and expand your vocabulary rapidly.
Practice Tips
- Take adjectives and create ke-...-an nouns: bahagia → kebahagiaan, cantik → kecantikan, bersih → kebersihan. This reveals how Indonesian creates abstract nouns.
- For verbs, create pe(N)-...-an nouns: belajar → pembelajaran, bangun → pembangunan, didik → pendidikan. Notice how the nasal assimilation works identically to me(N)-.
