Basic Negation in Hungarian

Overview

Negation in Hungarian is built around the word nem (not), placed directly before the verb. The system is clean and regular at the basic level, but it introduces one concept that surprises English speakers: multiple negation is standard and required. While English treats double negatives as incorrect, Hungarian demands them — Senkit nem látok (Nobody I-don't see) is the only correct way to say "I don't see anyone."

At the CEFR A1 level, learners need to master nem placement, learn the essential negative words (senki, semmi, sehol, soha), and understand that Hungarian negation interacts with word order and verbal prefixes. This foundation supports all future grammar, as negation patterns carry through every tense and mood.

The negative form of van (to be) is nincs (singular) and nincsenek (plural), which are used for existence and location. These are distinct from nem van, which is not standard.

How It Works

Basic Negation with Nem

Place nem directly before the verb:

Nincs / Nincsenek (Negative of Van)

Multiple Negation Rule

Every negative word in the sentence requires nem before the verb:

• Soha senkit nem látok sehol. — I never see anyone anywhere.
• All three negative words (soha, senkit, sehol) coexist with nem.

Common Mistakes

Using nem van instead of nincs

• Wrong: Nem van idő.
• Right: Nincs idő.
• Why: The negative existential/possessive uses the special form nincs, not nem van. This is one of the few truly irregular negation patterns.

Dropping nem with negative words

• Wrong: Senkit látok. (intended: I see nobody)
• Right: Senkit nem látok.
• Why: Hungarian requires double (or multiple) negation. Every negative pronoun/adverb needs nem before the verb.

Misplacing nem

• Wrong: Látom nem. or Nem a könyvet látom. (when meaning "I don't see the book")
• Right: Nem látom a könyvet.
• Why: Nem goes directly before the verb. Placing it before a noun changes the meaning to contrastive focus ("it's NOT the book I see").

Confusing negation with verbal prefixes

• Wrong: Nem megeszem. (with prefix attached)
• Right: Nem eszem meg. (prefix separates)
• Why: When negated, verbal prefixes separate and move after the verb. This is covered in detail at higher levels.

Usage Notes

The multiple negation rule is not optional or colloquial — it is standard, formal Hungarian grammar. A sentence like Soha senkit nem látok sehol with four negative elements is perfectly grammatical and expected. Single negation (Senkit látok) is ungrammatical.

In questions, nem can appear at the end for tag questions: Szép, nem? (Beautiful, isn't it?)

Practice Tips

• Practice negating ten common sentences daily. Start with simple nem + verb, then add negative pronouns.
• Drill the nincs/nincsenek pattern with possession: Nincs pénzem, nincs időm, nincs autóm.
• Create sentences with increasing negative elements: Nem megyek. → Soha nem megyek. → Soha sehova nem megyek.
