Negation with nicht/kein in German

Overview

Saying "no" and "not" in German is slightly more complex than in English because German uses two different words for negation: nicht and kein. Understanding when to use which is a fundamental A1 skill that you will apply in virtually every conversation.

The basic rule is straightforward: use kein to negate nouns that would have an indefinite article (ein/eine) or no article, and use nicht for everything else — verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns with definite articles. Think of kein as the negative version of ein: where English says "not a dog," German says kein Hund.

Getting the placement of nicht in a sentence is the trickier part, as it does not always go in the same position. But at the A1 level, a few clear guidelines will cover most situations.

Common Mistakes

Using "nicht" where "kein" is needed

• Wrong: Ich habe nicht ein Auto.
• Right: Ich habe kein Auto.
• Why: When negating a noun with an indefinite article (or no article), you must use kein, not nicht ein.

Placing "nicht" in the wrong position

• Wrong: Ich nicht komme morgen.
• Right: Ich komme morgen nicht.
• Why: In a main clause, the verb stays in second position. nicht typically goes at the end of the clause or before the specific element being negated.

Forgetting to decline "kein"

• Wrong: Ich habe kein Tasche.
• Right: Ich habe keine Tasche.
• Why: kein must agree with the noun in gender, number, and case — just like ein. Tasche is feminine, so it needs keine.

Practice Tips

1. The kein/nicht decision tree: For every negation, ask: "Am I negating a noun with ein or no article?" If yes, use kein. If no, use nicht. Practice this decision with ten sentences daily.
2. Transform positive to negative: Take any positive sentence and make it negative. This forces you to choose between kein and nicht and find the right position for nicht.
