Participles and Verbal Nouns in Persian
وجه وصفی و اسم مصدر
Overview
Participles and verbal nouns bridge the gap between verbs and nouns/adjectives in Persian. At the C1 level, understanding these forms unlocks a deeper appreciation of how Persian builds its vocabulary and creates elegant, compact expressions. These forms appear constantly in both literary and everyday Persian.
The present participle (present stem + نده -ande) creates agent nouns: نویسنده (nevisande, writer), خواننده (khānande, reader/singer). The past participle (past stem + ه -e) functions as an adjective: شکسته (shekaste, broken), نوشته (neveshte, written). The verbal noun (masdar/infinitive) is the dictionary form ending in -ن: رفتن (raftan, going/to go). Agent nouns also form with the suffix -گر (-gar): کارگر (kārgar, worker).
These forms are highly productive and appear in compound words, technical vocabulary, and literary expressions. Mastering them gives you the ability to understand unfamiliar words by analyzing their parts.

Common Mistakes
Confusing present and past participles
- Wrong: Using شکسته (broken) when meaning "one who breaks"
- Right: شکننده = one who breaks (present participle); شکسته = broken (past participle)
- Why: Present participles (-نده) describe the agent or ongoing quality. Past participles (-ه) describe the result or completed state.
Missing the agent noun pattern in unfamiliar words
- Wrong: Not recognizing the -نده ending as a present participle
- Right: Always check if a word ending in -نده is an agent noun from a verb
- Why: Recognizing morphological patterns helps you guess the meaning of new words.
Treating infinitives only as verb forms
- Wrong: Not recognizing رفتن as a noun meaning "going"
- Right: Infinitives function as verbal nouns: رفتن و آمدن (going and coming), قبل از رفتن (before going)
- Why: Persian infinitives serve double duty as verbs and nouns.
Usage Notes
Present participles and agent nouns are highly productive in modern Persian for creating job titles and technical terms: برنامهنویس (programmer, from برنامه + نویس), طراح (designer, from Arabic pattern), بازیگر (actor, from بازی + گر). Understanding these patterns is essential for professional vocabulary.
Practice Tips
- For every verb you know, form both the present participle (-نده) and past participle (-ه). Check if the present participle is a standard word.
- Create agent noun collections by suffix: list all -نده words you know, all -گر words, all -چی words. This reveals productive patterns.
- Practice using past participles as adjectives in noun phrases: آب جوشیده (boiled water), نان بریده (sliced bread), در باز (open door).
