Classifiers and Counting Objects in Persian

واحد شمارش

Overview

Persian uses classifier words (counters) between numbers and nouns, similar to languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Thai. At the A2 level, the most important classifier is تا (tā), the general-purpose counter used for almost any object. More specific classifiers like نفر (nafar, for people) and جلد (jeld, for books) add precision.

The pattern is: number + classifier + noun. Instead of saying سه کتاب (three books), colloquial Persian says سه تا کتاب (se tā ketāb, three-counter books). While the non-classifier form is grammatically correct, the classifier form is overwhelmingly preferred in speech.

How It Works

Classifier Usage Example
تا tā General (objects, things) سه تا کتاب (three books)
نفر nafar People پنج نفر (five people)
جلد jeld Books, volumes دو جلد کتاب (two volumes)
دانه dāne Small round objects سه دانه سیب (three apples)
لیوان livān Glasses (of liquid) یک لیوان آب (a glass of water)
فنجان fenjān Cups یک فنجان قهوه (a cup of coffee)
قاشق qāshoq Spoons دو قاشق شکر (two spoons of sugar)
بشقاب boshqāb Plates یک بشقاب برنج (a plate of rice)

Key rules:

  • تا is the default in speech — use it when unsure
  • The noun after the classifier stays singular: سه تا کتاب (not کتاب‌ها)
  • نفر is always used for counting people

Examples in Context

Persian English Note
سه تا کتاب خریدم. I bought three books. تا general
پنج نفر آمدند. Five people came. نفر for people
دو جلد کتاب two volumes of books جلد for volumes
یک لیوان آب a glass of water Container classifier
چند تا می‌خوای؟ How many do you want? Question
یک دانه هم نمانده. Not even one is left. Emphatic
ده تا تخم‌مرغ ten eggs تا general
سه نفر مهمان داریم. We have three guests. نفر for people
یک فنجان چای a cup of tea Container
چند نفر هستید؟ How many people are you? Restaurant question

Common Mistakes

Omitting تا in spoken Persian

  • Wrong: سه کتاب خریدم (sounds formal/written)
  • Right: سه تا کتاب خریدم (natural spoken form)
  • Why: In conversation, تا is expected with numbers. Omitting it sounds bookish.

Using تا for people

  • Wrong: سه تا آدم آمدند
  • Right: سه نفر آمدند
  • Why: People always use نفر, not تا.

Pluralizing nouns after classifier + number

  • Wrong: سه تا کتاب‌ها
  • Right: سه تا کتاب
  • Why: After a number (with or without classifier), the noun stays singular.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice ordering with classifiers: دو تا چای (two teas), سه تا نان (three breads), یک لیوان آب (one glass of water).
  2. Use نفر when counting people: چند نفرید? (how many are you?) — سه نفر (three people).
  3. When in doubt, use تا — it is correct for virtually everything except people.
