Archaïsch en Juridisch Taalgebruik in het Engels

Overzicht

Het Engels kent een rijke traditie van archaïsche (verouderd) taalgebruik dat tot op de dag van vandaag wordt bewaard in juridische documenten, religieuze teksten, formele ceremoniën en traditionele literatuur. Op C2-niveau is het essentieel om deze taal te herkennen en te begrijpen, ook al gebruik je het zelf zelden actief.

Archaïsch Engels duikt op in wetboeken, de Bijbel (King James Version), Shakespeare, formele proclamaties en traditionele spreuken. Juridisch Engels (legalese) is een bijzonder gespecialiseerd register met zijn eigen vocabulaire.

Veelgemaakte fouten

"Thee" en "thou" verkeerd gebruiken

• Opmerking: "Thou" is het onderwerp, "thee" het object: I love thee. Thou art beautiful.
• In modern Engels is dit archaïsch maar je tegenkomt het in citaten.

"Wherefore" interpreteren als "where"

• Fout: "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" interpreteren als "Where are you, Romeo?"
• Correct: "Wherefore" = "waarom". Juliet vraagt: "Waarom ben je Romeo?" (= waarom heet je Romeo, van die vervloekte familie?)

• Lees juridische documenten: Lees een huurcontract of arbeidsovereenkomst in het Engels en onderstreep de juridische termen. Zoek de betekenis op.
• Bijbelse teksten lezen: Lees een passage uit de King James Bible en identificeer de archaïsche werkwoordsvormen.
• Vergelijk versies: Zoek een modern vertaalde Bijbelpassage en vergelijk met de King James Version.
