De Subjonctief in het Engels

Overzicht

De subjonctief (subjunctive mood) is een werkwoordsvorm die twijfel, wens, eis, aanbeveling of hypothetische situaties uitdrukt. In modern Engels is hij minder frequent dan in het Frans of Spaans, maar hij komt wel voor in specifieke formele contexten.

Er zijn twee hoofdvormen: de tegenwoordige subjonctief (basisvorm van het werkwoord, ook bij "he/she/it") en de verleden subjonctief (were voor alle personen, bekend van "If I were you").

De subjonctief is verplicht in formele schrijftaal na bepaalde werkwoorden en uitdrukkingen, en geeft je taal een formeel, precies karakter.

Hoe het werkt

Tegenwoordige subjonctief: basisvorm (geen -s!)

Na werkwoorden van aanbeveling, eis en voorstel: suggest, recommend, insist, demand, request, require, propose

I suggest (that) he leave immediately. (niet: "leaves") The committee demands (that) she be present. (niet: "is") It is important that everyone arrive on time. (niet: "arrives")

Verleden subjonctief: "were" voor alle personen

In hypothetische zinnen en na "wish": If I were you, I would apologize. (niet: "was" in formeel) I wish I were taller. She acts as if she were the boss.

Veelgemaakte fouten

-s toevoegen bij derde persoon tegenwoordige subjonctief

• Fout: I suggest that he leaves immediately.
• Correct: I suggest that he leave immediately.
• Waarom: De tegenwoordige subjonctief heeft nooit een -s — het is de basisvorm voor alle personen.

"Was" in formele hypothetische zinnen

• Fout: If I was you, I would be worried. (in formele context)
• Correct: If I were you, I would be worried.
• Waarom: In formeel Engels gebruik je "were" voor alle personen in hypothetische zinnen.

Oefentips

• Formele aanbevelingen schrijven: "I recommend that the committee consider... It is essential that all participants be..."
• Herken subjonctief in teksten: Markeer subjonctief in formele documenten, nieuwsartikelen en academische teksten.
