Personal Article and Special Articles in Catalan
Overview
At the C1 level, you encounter article forms that go beyond the standard el/la/els/les. Catalan has a personal article (en/na) used before proper names, a neuter article for abstract references, and the distinctive salat article (es/sa) of Balearic Catalan. Understanding these forms deepens your grasp of Catalan's unique linguistic identity.
The personal article (en for men, na for women) is placed before first names in informal and colloquial contexts: en Pere, na Maria. This feature has no equivalent in Spanish and is one of the most characteristically Catalan grammatical elements. It is standard in Central and Balearic Catalan, though less common in formal registers.
The neuter article uses el or allò to refer to abstract qualities or whole ideas: el bo d'això (the good thing about this), allò que dius (what you say). The salat article (es/sa/ets/ses) replaces the standard article in Balearic dialects and is a key dialectal marker.
How It Works
Personal Article
| Gender | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | en | en Joan, en Pere, en Miquel |
| Feminine | na | na Maria, na Laia, na Carme |
When used:
- Colloquial and informal speech (standard in Central and Balearic)
- Not used with surnames alone: el senyor Garcia (not en Garcia)
- Not used in formal registers or with titles
- Some regions (Valencia) do not use it
Neuter Article
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| el + adjective | Abstract quality | El bo d'això és que... (The good thing about this is...) |
| allò + que clause | Abstract reference | Allò que em vas dir. (What you told me.) |
| el que | What/that which | El que importa és la salut. (What matters is health.) |
Salat Article (Balearic)
| Standard | Balearic | English |
|---|---|---|
| el | es | the (m.sg.) |
| la | sa | the (f.sg.) |
| els | ets | the (m.pl.) |
| les | ses | the (f.pl.) |
| Example (Standard) | Example (Balearic) | English |
|---|---|---|
| el gos | es ca | the dog |
| la casa | sa casa | the house |
| els nens | ets al·lots | the children |

Common Mistakes
Using the personal article in formal contexts
- Formal: Joan Garcia ha estat nomenat director.
- Informal: En Joan ha estat nomenat director.
- Why: The personal article is informal/colloquial. Drop it in formal writing, titles, and official contexts.
Confusing neuter "el" with masculine "el"
- Masculine: El llibre és bo. (The book is good.)
- Neuter: El bo és que funciona. (The good thing is that it works.)
- Why: When "el" precedes an adjective without a noun, it functions as a neuter article referring to an abstract concept.
Treating Balearic salat articles as errors
- Not wrong: Es ca is perfectly correct in Balearic Catalan
- Why: The salat article is a legitimate dialectal feature with its own historical development. It is not substandard.
Usage Notes
The personal article is one of the features that most clearly marks Catalan as distinct from Spanish. Its use varies regionally: strong in Central and Balearic Catalan, less common in Northwestern, and mostly absent in Valencian. In writing, it appears in informal texts, dialogue, and literature depicting everyday speech. In media (TV3, Catalunya Ràdio), it is used naturally by presenters.
Practice Tips
- Practice using the personal article with names you know: "en Marc, na Laura, en David, na Mònica." Say them naturally in sentences.
- Practice neuter articles with abstract expressions: "El millor de viure aquí és el temps. El pitjor és el soroll. Allò que més m'agrada és la gent."
- If you travel to Mallorca, listen for the salat articles and try to follow conversations using es/sa instead of el/la.
