Formal Register in Catalan

Overview

Formal register in Catalan encompasses the language of academic writing, official correspondence, institutional communication, and public speeches. At the C1 level, you need to distinguish formal from informal Catalan and produce appropriately formal texts when the situation demands it.

Formal Catalan is characterized by specific grammatical choices: the impersonal pronoun hom (one), consistent use of the subjunctive, literary connectors like tanmateix (nevertheless) and nogensmenys (nonetheless), and formal correspondence conventions. It also avoids colloquialisms, Castilian borrowings, and overly casual constructions.

The Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) provides the normative framework for formal Catalan. Understanding this standard is important for anyone who writes professionally in Catalan — for work, academic, or official purposes.

Common Mistakes

Using "hom" in casual speech

  • Inappropriate: Hom no pot creure-s'ho (in a bar with friends)
  • Appropriate: Hom no pot ignorar les dades. (in an essay)
  • Why: "Hom" is exclusively formal/written. In speech, use "es" or "la gent."

Mixing registers

  • Wrong: Benvolgut senyor, bueno, li escric perquè... (formal salutation + informal filler)
  • Right: Benvolgut senyor, m'adreço a vostè per tal de...
  • Why: Consistency of register is crucial. Formal texts should be formal throughout.

Using Castilian calques in formal writing

  • Calque: Des de ja (from Spanish "desde ya")
  • Catalan: Des d'ara or de seguida
  • Why: Formal Catalan strives for genuine Catalan forms, avoiding unnecessary borrowings from Spanish.

Usage Notes

Formal Catalan serves a crucial sociolinguistic function. In the context of language normalization, using proper formal Catalan — rather than switching to Spanish for official contexts — reinforces the language's status in education, government, and business. The Direcció General de Política Lingüística promotes formal Catalan in all official domains across Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and Valencia.

Practice Tips

  1. Write a formal email in Catalan: use the proper salutation, formal connectors, and closing. Compare it with how you would write the same message informally.
  2. Read official documents from the Generalitat de Catalunya website to see formal Catalan in practice.
  3. Build a vocabulary list of formal/informal pairs: dir/manifestar, fer/realitzar, però/tanmateix, perquè/car.
