Formal and Academic Register in Greek

Επίσημος Γραπτός Λόγος

This article is part of the Greek grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Formal written Greek uses standard Modern Greek grammar, but organizes information differently from conversation. It tends to make logical relations explicit, qualify claims carefully, and use impersonal or passive wording, noun-based expressions, and established phrases such as σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα, η εν λόγω απόφαση, and εν κατακλείδι. Good formal writing is precise and coherent; it is not simply everyday Greek made longer or more archaic.

Overview

At C1, register becomes part of grammatical control. Register means the variety of language chosen for a particular setting and audience. A message to a friend, a newspaper analysis, a university essay, and an institutional report may describe the same event, but they do not normally use the same wording. Formal Greek is common in essays, reports, research writing, public announcements, serious journalism, and professional correspondence.

The main challenge is not learning one new verb tense. It is learning to combine familiar resources for a particular effect: connectors that show the structure of an argument, passive constructions that shift attention away from the person acting, and nominalization (turning an action or quality into a noun). Compare Οι ερευνητές ανέλυσαν τα δεδομένα (“The researchers analyzed the data”) with Πραγματοποιήθηκε ανάλυση των δεδομένων (“An analysis of the data was carried out”). The second version presents the procedure rather than the researchers as the center of attention.

English has similar academic habits, including passive verbs and phrases such as “according to” or “with regard to.” The forms do not map word for word, however. Greek often uses να plus a finite verb where English uses an infinitive, and its articles, adjectives, and participles must agree in gender, number, and case. A convincing Greek text therefore depends on Greek sentence patterns, not on replacing English words one at a time.

How It Works

1. State sources and scope explicitly

Formal claims normally show where information comes from and what part of the topic is under discussion.

  • σύμφωνα με + accusative: according to — σύμφωνα με την έκθεση
  • βάσει + genitive: on the basis of — βάσει των στοιχείων
  • όπως προκύπτει από + accusative: as emerges from — όπως προκύπτει από την έρευνα
  • όσον αφορά + accusative: as regards — όσον αφορά τη χρηματοδότηση
  • αναφορικά με / σχετικά με + accusative: concerning — σχετικά με το ζήτημα
  • στο πλαίσιο + genitive: in the context of — στο πλαίσιο της μελέτης

A case is the form a noun phrase takes according to its role. After με, Greek uses the accusative: με τη μέθοδο, not με της μεθόδου. In βάσει των δεδομένων, however, των δεδομένων is genitive because it depends on the established expression βάσει.

These opening frames also control the strength of a claim. Σύμφωνα με τη μελέτη attributes a statement to the study; it does not guarantee that the statement is universally true.

2. Connect the stages of an argument

Connectors tell the reader whether the next clause adds, contrasts, explains, results, or concludes. A clause is a group of words built around a verb.

Function Common formal expressions Typical meaning
Addition επιπλέον, παράλληλα, επίσης furthermore, at the same time, also
Contrast ωστόσο, εντούτοις, αντιθέτως however, nevertheless, by contrast
Cause επειδή, δεδομένου ότι, λόγω + genitive because, given that, because of
Result επομένως, συνεπώς, ως εκ τούτου therefore, consequently
Clarification ειδικότερα, συγκεκριμένα, με άλλα λόγια more specifically, in other words
Conclusion συμπερασματικά, εν κατακλείδι in conclusion

Punctuation and syntax still matter. Sentence adverbs such as ωστόσο and συνεπώς are often set off by a comma when they frame the following statement: Ωστόσο, τα διαθέσιμα στοιχεία δεν επαρκούν. Do not stack several connectors with the same job: Ωστόσο, παρ’ όλα αυτά... is usually redundant.

3. Use passive and impersonal constructions purposefully

The passive voice presents the subject as undergoing an action rather than performing it. In Τα αποτελέσματα αξιολογήθηκαν, the results were evaluated; the evaluator may be unknown, obvious, or unimportant. A person responsible for the action can be introduced with από: Η πρόταση εγκρίθηκε από την επιτροπή.

Formal Greek also uses impersonal constructions—patterns that do not name a personal subject:

  • κρίνεται σκόπιμο να... — it is deemed appropriate to...
  • θεωρείται αναγκαίο να... — it is considered necessary to...
  • διαπιστώνεται ότι... — it is found/observed that...
  • προκύπτει ότι... — it follows/emerges that...
  • εκτιμάται ότι... — it is estimated/considered that...
  • δύναται να... — it may/is able to...; highly formal

Greek normally follows these evaluative expressions with να plus a conjugated verb: Κρίνεται σκόπιμο να εξεταστούν οι εναλλακτικές. Here εξεταστούν is passive and plural because its subject is οι εναλλακτικές. This differs from English “to examine the alternatives,” which uses an infinitive.

Impersonal style is not automatically better. Αποφασίσαμε να αλλάξουμε τη μέθοδο is clearer when the writers genuinely made the decision and responsibility matters. Use αποφασίστηκε η αλλαγή της μεθόδου only when the decision or procedure, rather than the decision-makers, deserves focus.

4. Build noun-centered expressions

Formal prose often condenses an action into a noun:

  • αναλύουμε τα αποτελέσματαη ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων
  • εφαρμόζουμε το μέτροη εφαρμογή του μέτρου
  • αξιολογούμε την πρότασηη αξιολόγηση της πρότασης
  • μειώθηκε η κατανάλωσηη μείωση της κατανάλωσης

The dependent phrase commonly takes the genitive: των αποτελεσμάτων, του μέτρου, της πρότασης. This structure is useful after verbs such as απαιτείται, προτείνεται, and ολοκληρώθηκε: Απαιτείται περαιτέρω διερεύνηση του φαινομένου.

Nominalization creates density, but too many abstract nouns can hide the action. Η πραγματοποίηση της αξιολόγησης της εφαρμογής του προγράμματος is grammatically possible but hard to process. A clearer revision is Η επιτροπή αξιολόγησε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο εφαρμόστηκε το πρόγραμμα. Formal does not mean unreadable.

5. Qualify claims instead of overstating them

Academic writing distinguishes evidence, interpretation, probability, and limitation. Useful qualifying language includes:

  • φαίνεται να + verb — appears to...
  • ενδέχεται να + verb — may...
  • πιθανότατα — probably
  • σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις — in certain cases
  • σε σημαντικό βαθμό — to a significant extent
  • με βάση τα διαθέσιμα στοιχεία — based on the available data
  • δεν μπορεί να αποκλειστεί το ενδεχόμενο να... — the possibility that... cannot be excluded

Compare Η μέθοδος αποτυγχάνει (“The method fails”) with Τα ευρήματα υποδηλώνουν ότι η μέθοδος ενδέχεται να μην είναι αποτελεσματική σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις (“The findings suggest that the method may not be effective in every case”). The second does not merely sound more formal; it makes a more accurately limited claim.

6. Manage reference across a text

Formal texts repeatedly refer back to people, decisions, findings, or sections without conversational repetition.

  • ο/η/το εν λόγω + noun — the aforementioned/in-question...
  • ο προαναφερθείς / η προαναφερθείσα / το προαναφερθέν — the aforementioned...
  • τα ανωτέρω — the above points; formal and somewhat administrative
  • η παρούσα μελέτη — the present study
  • η συγκεκριμένη προσέγγιση — the particular approach

Εν λόγω is fixed and does not change form: η εν λόγω απόφαση, του εν λόγω φορέα, τα εν λόγω μέτρα. The article and noun carry the required gender, number, and case. By contrast, προαναφερθείς is an adjective-like participial form (a verb-derived form used here like an adjective), so it agrees with its noun.

Examples in Context

Greek English Note
Σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα, η ανεργία παρουσίασε μικρή μείωση. According to the data, unemployment showed a slight decrease. Attributes the information to a source.
Όπως προκύπτει από την ανάλυση, οι δύο ομάδες δεν διαφέρουν σημαντικά. As the analysis shows, the two groups do not differ significantly. Introduces an evidence-based finding.
Κρίνεται σκόπιμο να εξεταστούν και άλλες εναλλακτικές. It is deemed appropriate for other alternatives to be examined as well. Impersonal evaluation plus passive να-clause.
Η πρόταση εγκρίθηκε από την αρμόδια επιτροπή. The proposal was approved by the competent committee. Passive with an explicitly named agent.
Απαιτείται περαιτέρω διερεύνηση του ζητήματος. Further investigation of the issue is required. Impersonal verb plus nominalization.
Η εν λόγω απόφαση τέθηκε σε ισχύ τον Μάιο. The decision in question came into force in May. Fixed formal reference phrase.
Τα ευρήματα φαίνεται να επιβεβαιώνουν την αρχική υπόθεση. The findings appear to confirm the initial hypothesis. A carefully qualified interpretation.
Το δείγμα ήταν περιορισμένο· ως εκ τούτου, τα αποτελέσματα δεν μπορούν να γενικευθούν. The sample was limited; therefore, the results cannot be generalized. Explicit consequence.
Παρόλο που σημειώθηκε πρόοδος, εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν σημαντικές δυσκολίες. Although progress was made, significant difficulties remain. Concession before the main claim.
Όσον αφορά τη χρηματοδότηση, δεν έχουν ανακοινωθεί νέα μέτρα. As regards funding, no new measures have been announced. Establishes the topic and scope.
Η έρευνα πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος. The research was conducted within the framework of the program. Formal contextual phrase with genitive.
Δεν μπορεί να αποκλειστεί το ενδεχόμενο σφάλματος. The possibility of error cannot be excluded. Cautious statement of uncertainty.
Εν κατακλείδι, τα διαθέσιμα στοιχεία υποστηρίζουν την ανάγκη αναθεώρησης της πολιτικής. In conclusion, the available evidence supports the need to revise the policy. Signals a final synthesis.

Common Mistakes

Translating an English infinitive directly

  • Wrong: Κρίνεται σκόπιμο εξετάσει τις επιλογές.
  • Right: Κρίνεται σκόπιμο να εξεταστούν οι επιλογές.
  • Why: Modern Greek uses να plus a conjugated verb here. Since the options undergo the examination, the passive plural εξεταστούν is appropriate.

Using the wrong case after a formal phrase

  • Wrong: Σύμφωνα με των δεδομένων...
  • Right: Σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα...
  • Why: με requires the accusative. Do not copy the genitive used in English “according to the data” or in a different Greek construction such as βάσει των δεδομένων.

Treating εν λόγω as an adjective that changes ending

  • Wrong: της εν λόγης απόφασης
  • Right: της εν λόγω απόφασης
  • Why: εν λόγω is a fixed phrase. It remains unchanged while the surrounding article and noun decline.

Choosing a connector for tone rather than logic

  • Wrong: Τα αποτελέσματα ήταν ασαφή. Επομένως, απαιτείται μεγαλύτερο δείγμα. when the need for a larger sample has not actually been established by the preceding claim.
  • Right: Τα αποτελέσματα ήταν ασαφή, ενδεχομένως λόγω του μικρού δείγματος. Συνεπώς, απαιτείται έρευνα με μεγαλύτερο δείγμα.
  • Why: A result connector such as συνεπώς must express a genuine consequence. Supply the missing reasoning instead of using connectors as decoration.

Making every sentence passive

  • Awkward: Πραγματοποιήθηκε συλλογή των δεδομένων και κατόπιν έγινε ανάλυσή τους από τους ερευνητές.
  • Clearer: Οι ερευνητές συνέλεξαν και στη συνέχεια ανέλυσαν τα δεδομένα.
  • Why: When the agent is relevant and known, the active voice is often shorter and clearer. Passive wording is a tool for information focus, not a requirement of formality.

Overusing learned expressions

  • Awkward: Εν προκειμένω, ως εκ τούτου και εν κατακλείδι, η εν λόγω πρόταση...
  • Better: Συνεπώς, η πρόταση...
  • Why: Several learned phrases in one opening sound inflated and may blur the relation between ideas. Choose the one connector that performs the needed job.

Usage Notes

Formal Greek is a range, not a single uniform style. A newspaper analysis may use σύμφωνα με, passive verbs, and compact noun phrases while remaining accessible. A research paper usually defines terms more carefully, cites sources, and qualifies conclusions. Administrative and legal prose may go further, using formulaic or learned expressions that would sound excessive in an ordinary essay.

Some formal items are also normal outside academic writing. Ωστόσο, σύμφωνα με, and σχετικά με occur in educated speech and news broadcasts. Others, such as εν κατακλείδι, are strongly associated with organized written or prepared speech. Δύναται να is markedly formal; in many contexts, ordinary μπορεί να communicates the same meaning more naturally.

English-speaking learners sometimes assume that longer Greco-Latin-looking words create an academic tone, as they often can in English. In Greek, register depends just as much on collocation—the words that conventionally occur together—and on syntax. Learn whole frames such as προκύπτει από τα στοιχεία ότι... and η ανάγκη για περαιτέρω έρευνα, rather than isolated “formal synonyms.”

Writers also vary between first-person and impersonal presentation. Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζουμε... (“In this paper we examine...”) is fully compatible with modern academic style when authorial presence is acceptable. Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζεται... (“In this paper ... is examined”) creates more distance. Follow the conventions of the institution, publication, or genre rather than assuming that the first person is always informal.

Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use

Information structure matters more than surface form

The beginning of a Greek sentence often establishes the frame or topic, while later material carries the new point. Compare:

  • Η επιτροπή ενέκρινε την πρόταση χθες. — neutral emphasis on what the committee did
  • Η πρόταση εγκρίθηκε χθες από την επιτροπή. — the proposal is already the topic
  • Χθες εγκρίθηκε η πρόταση από την επιτροπή. — the timing is foregrounded

All three can be formal. Choosing among them depends on how the sentence connects to the surrounding paragraph. This leads toward marked syntax and rhetorical structures, where word order is manipulated more deliberately for emphasis.

Formal cohesion goes beyond connectors

A paragraph is not coherent merely because each sentence begins with ωστόσο, επιπλέον, or συνεπώς. Cohesion also comes from controlled repetition and reference:

Η μελέτη εξετάζει την πρόσβαση στις υπηρεσίες υγείας. Η συγκεκριμένη πρόσβαση επηρεάζεται από γεωγραφικούς και οικονομικούς παράγοντες. Οι παράγοντες αυτοί αναλύονται στις επόμενες ενότητες.

The chain την πρόσβαση → η συγκεκριμένη πρόσβαση → οι παράγοντες → οι παράγοντες αυτοί guides the reader through the information. Pronouns and demonstratives must still have an unmistakable referent—the word or idea they point back to.

Learned forms require restraint

Formal Modern Greek contains inherited learned forms and fixed combinations, including εν λόγω, εκ μέρους, εν μέρει, and εν κατακλείδι. They belong to the modern language as established expressions. That does not make freely invented archaic grammar appropriate. Use forms you have encountered as complete, reliable units, and check a current dictionary or a model text before extending an old-looking pattern to new words.

Academic precision also requires reporting verbs that match the evidence. Αποδεικνύω (“prove”) is much stronger than δείχνω (“show”), υποδηλώνω (“suggest/indicate”), or διαπιστώνω (“find/establish through observation”). Choose the verb according to what the source actually supports.

Practice Tips

  1. Rewrite one idea three ways. Start with an active sentence such as Η ομάδα αξιολόγησε το πρόγραμμα. Then make it passive (Το πρόγραμμα αξιολογήθηκε από την ομάδα) and noun-centered (Πραγματοποιήθηκε αξιολόγηση του προγράμματος). Ask what each version puts in focus.
  2. Build connector groups by function. Keep separate lists for contrast, cause, result, qualification, and conclusion. When reviewing a paragraph, label the logical relation before choosing the Greek expression.
  3. Mine complete frames from reliable texts. From a newspaper analysis, university publication, or institutional report, record phrases with their grammar: σύμφωνα με + accusative, βάσει + genitive, ενδέχεται να + verb. Then write a new sentence in the same frame without copying the original content.
