Media and Journalistic Catalan

Català dels Mitjans de Comunicació

This article is part of the Catalan grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

In Brief

Catalan news language compresses information in headlines, then restores detail and attribution in the article or broadcast: El govern anuncia noves mesures, followed by who said what, when, and with what degree of certainty. It favors clear active clauses and impersonal constructions, uses nominalizations more often than conversation does, and distinguishes carefully between facts, claims, and allegations.

Overview

Media Catalan is not a separate grammar. It is a set of choices made under journalistic constraints: a headline must be short, a lead must identify the main event quickly, and a radio sentence must be understood the first time it is heard. You will encounter this register in digital newspapers, news alerts, television captions, live radio, interviews, and sports or weather reports.

At C2, the challenge is less about recognizing individual verb forms and more about controlling register—choosing language that fits a public, informative context. You need to understand why a headline uses the present tense for a completed event, why a report hides an unknown agent, and why segons fonts properes al cas limits the writer's responsibility for a claim. You also need to notice when compressed language becomes vague, bureaucratic, or misleading.

Catalan outlets, including 3Cat and other broadcasters, maintain their own house styles. Their detailed preferences can differ, but the broad principles are stable: standard Catalan, economy, intelligibility, accurate attribution, and vocabulary suited to the subject. A news report may be formal without sounding like an administrative document.

How It Works

Headlines compress, leads clarify

A written report often moves from maximum compression to fuller syntax:

Part Main function Typical Catalan form
Titular Name the central event El Parlament aprova la reforma
Subtítol Add a consequence or key detail La norma entrarà en vigor al setembre
Entradeta Give essential context and attribution La cambra ha aprovat el text aquest dimarts per una àmplia majoria.
Cos de la notícia Develop evidence, reactions, and background Full sentences, quotations, figures, and chronology

A headline may omit words that readers can recover, especially articles and a form of haver or ser: Tres detinguts en una operació contra el frau. This is an elliptical clause (a clause with recoverable words left out): in full prose it could become Tres persones han estat detingudes en una operació contra el frau. Ellipsis is useful in a headline, but a long chain of nouns can become difficult to parse.

The present tense makes news feel immediate even when the event has just happened:

  • Headline: El govern anuncia noves mesures.
  • Report: El govern ha anunciat noves mesures aquest matí.
  • Background: L'executiu ja havia plantejat una reforma semblant l'any passat.

English headlines also use a “historical present,” so the effect is familiar. The important difference is not to copy English headline syntax word for word. Catalan still needs natural Catalan prepositions, articles, agreement, and word order.

Choose the clause according to the focus

News writing has several ways to place the event before the person responsible for it. The agent is the person or body that performs an action.

Structure Pattern Best use Example
Active agent + verb + affected element The agent matters and is known Els bombers han evacuat l'edifici.
Pronominal impersonal/passive es + third-person verb The action or result matters more S'han suspès les classes.
Event with produir-se produir-se + event A neutral event is reported S'ha produït un accident a la C-31.
Periphrastic passive ser + participle + optional per The affected element is the topic La proposta va ser rebutjada pel ple.
Result with estar estar + participle/adjective The resulting state matters La carretera està tallada.

A participle is the verb form used in combinations such as ha aprovat or ha estat aprovada. In a passive with ser, it agrees with the affected noun: La proposta ha estat aprovada; Els pressupostos han estat aprovats. In s'ha aprovat la proposta, the finite verb is singular because la proposta is singular; in s'han aprovat les propostes, it is plural.

The pronominal construction is often lighter than a full passive, but it should not erase a known, relevant agent. S'han comès errors avoids saying who made them; El departament ha comès errors assigns responsibility clearly. Journalistic neutrality does not require systematic vagueness.

Attribute information and mark certainty

Attribution tells the audience where information comes from. It is especially important when a statement is disputed, preliminary, anonymous, or not independently verified.

Common frames include:

  • Segons el Departament de Salut, ... — identifies a source without endorsing every detail.
  • D'acord amb l'informe, ... — points to a document.
  • Fonts properes al cas asseguren que ... — reports an anonymous source's claim.
  • La portaveu ha explicat que ... — uses indirect speech.
  • En declaracions a Catalunya Ràdio, ... — identifies where the words were given.
  • L'acusat nega haver participat en els fets. — assigns the denial to the accused.

Choose the reporting verb precisely. Dir is neutral; explicar suggests elaboration; afirmar or assegurar presents a strong claim; admetre implies acceptance of something previously resisted; denunciar may mean publicly report or formally complain. Do not use a stronger verb merely for variety.

Quotation marks distinguish exact words from the journalist's summary. With indirect speech, preserve the source's level of certainty rather than quietly turning an estimate into a fact. The journalistic conditional—El ministre dimitiria demà—can indicate unconfirmed information, but it may also look like an ordinary future-in-the-past or hypothetical conditional. Clear attribution is usually safer: Segons dos membres del partit, el ministre preveu dimitir demà.

Nominal style: compact but potentially heavy

A nominalization is a noun formed from, or used instead of, an action or quality: afectar becomes afectació, and augmentar becomes augment. It lets a report package an event as a topic:

  • Verbal: Les obres han afectat poc el trànsit.
  • Nominal: L'afectació de les obres sobre el trànsit ha estat mínima.

Nominalizations are useful in headlines, captions, and summaries because they can connect several facts compactly: l'aprovació de la llei, la reducció de les emissions, el tancament de la línia. Too many produce administrative prose: la realització de l'avaluació de l'afectació. A direct verb is clearer: els tècnics avaluaran com ha afectat...

English also packs information into nouns, often by placing several nouns before another noun. Catalan more often unfolds the relationship with articles and prepositions: English “government budget approval” is naturally l'aprovació dels pressupostos del govern, or better, when the agent matters, el Parlament aprova els pressupostos del govern.

Broadcast language must work in one hearing

Radio and television cannot assume that listeners will reread a sentence. Broadcast Catalan therefore tends to use shorter information units, explicit references, and a logical order. A pronoun such as aquest or això is risky if two possible referents have just been mentioned. Repeating la proposta may be better than elegant ambiguity.

Figures also need oral framing. A dense written figure such as 47,8% is usually read as un quaranta-set coma vuit per cent; when exact precision is not essential, the script may first give the scale: gairebé la meitat. Dates, initials, foreign names, and place names should be prepared for pronunciation rather than treated as purely visual material.

In live reporting, signposting helps: A aquesta hora, Pel que fa a la mobilitat, Mentrestant and En resum. These expressions guide the listener, but repeated filler such as en aquest sentit can weaken the report if it does not express a real relationship.

Common Mistakes

Copying an English noun stack

  • Wrong: el govern pressupost acord
  • Right: l'acord del govern sobre els pressupostos / el govern acorda els pressupostos
  • Why: Catalan normally shows noun relationships with articles and prepositions, or turns the central action back into a verb.

Making every sentence passive

  • Wrong: Una nova línia d'ajuts ha estat anunciada pel govern i serà gestionada pel departament.
  • Better: El govern ha anunciat una nova línia d'ajuts, que gestionarà el departament.
  • Why: The full ser + participle passive is correct, but repeated passives make prose heavy. Use the active voice when the agent is relevant.

Losing agreement in a pronominal passive

  • Wrong: S'ha aprovat tres mocions.
  • Right: S'han aprovat tres mocions.
  • Why: In this passive reading, tres mocions controls plural agreement. Compare singular S'ha aprovat una moció.

Presenting an allegation as an established fact

  • Wrong: L'empresari va cometre frau. (when proceedings are still open)
  • Right: La fiscalia acusa l'empresari d'un presumpte frau.
  • Why: The correction identifies the source and preserves the person's legal status. Detingut, investigat, acusat and condemnat describe different stages and are not interchangeable.

Using a vague source formula when a source can be named

  • Weak: Segons fonts, hi haurà canvis.
  • Better: Segons fonts del Departament d'Educació, hi haurà canvis en el calendari.
  • Why: Fonts alone gives the audience little basis for assessing the claim. Identify the institution or relationship as specifically as source protection allows.

Letting nominalizations hide the event

  • Heavy: S'ha procedit a la realització del tancament de l'accés.
  • Clear: La policia ha tancat l'accés.
  • Why: Procedir a la realització de adds length without useful information. A direct verb also reveals who acted.

Usage Notes

Written and spoken news are not identical

Digital headlines reward brevity and searchable key words. Radio rewards immediate comprehension, and television must share attention with images and captions. A compact phrase such as l'afectació ferroviària derivada de l'avaria may fit a written summary, but l'avaria afecta la circulació dels trens is easier to process aloud.

Formal does not mean archaic

News Catalan can use formal connectors such as tanmateix, but common transparent options—però, en canvi, tot i això—often communicate more directly. Hom is grammatical and formal, yet impersonal es, cal, or a concrete subject is usually more natural in general news. The choice depends on outlet, genre, and audience.

Precision comes before dramatic effect

Media vocabulary often distinguishes close concepts: incendi is a fire, conat d'incendi an incipient fire; ferit means injured, while il·lès means unharmed; escorcollar is to search premises or a person in a police context, whereas investigar is broader. Avoid upgrading pluja intensa to diluvi or desacord to crisi without evidence.

Be equally careful with quantities. Una trentena de persones is an approximation, not an exact synonym for trenta persones. Fins a 200 gives a maximum, while almenys 200 gives a minimum. Such small grammatical choices change the reported fact.

Geographic and institutional variation

Catalan media serve audiences across several territories and legitimate standard varieties. Forms and pronunciation may reflect the outlet's region. Do not treat every Valencian or Balearic standard form as an error merely because a Barcelona-based outlet uses another form. At the same time, a single report should follow a coherent house style unless a quotation or proper name requires otherwise.

Beyond the Basics: Framing, Information Structure, and Voice

At an advanced level, ask not only whether a sentence is grammatical, but what it places in the foreground. Compare:

  • La protesta ha col·lapsat el centre. — makes the protest the cause and grammatical subject.
  • El centre ha quedat col·lapsat per la protesta. — foregrounds the affected place and resulting state.
  • Hi ha hagut afectacions al centre durant la protesta. — foregrounds effects while weakening direct causation.

All three can describe related circumstances, but they do not assign agency and certainty in the same way. Information structure means how a sentence arranges familiar material and new, important material. Catalan commonly places the established topic early and the newsworthy element later, but a headline may reverse that expectation to foreground an outcome.

Reported speech creates another layer of framing. A sequence such as El conseller admet..., L'oposició denuncia..., Els experts alerten... does more than avoid repeating dir: each verb interprets the speech act. Advanced readers should separate the source's proposition from the journalist's choice of verb. Advanced writers should choose that verb because it is accurate, not because it is colorful.

The same critical reading applies to agency. Institutional reports often use es va decidir, es van detectar irregularitats, or nouns such as la retirada without naming who decided, detected, or withdrew something. Sometimes the agent is unknown or irrelevant; sometimes the grammar protects an institution from scrutiny. A C2 reader should be able to recover the missing question: Qui ho va decidir?

Finally, quotations can legitimately preserve colloquial, regional, or nonstandard speech, but the surrounding narration normally follows the outlet's standard. Editing a quotation for grammar may distort the speaker's words; reproducing every hesitation may distract or unfairly characterize the speaker. This is an editorial and ethical judgment as well as a grammatical one.

Practice Tips

  1. Rebuild a news item in layers. Take one Catalan report and write a short titular, a one-sentence entradeta, and a three-sentence broadcast version. Notice what you omit and what you must restore for clarity.
  2. Track source and certainty. Underline every attribution phrase and reporting verb in an article. Label each statement as confirmed fact, source claim, estimate, allegation, or prediction.
  3. Convert nouns back into verbs. Collect phrases such as l'aprovació de la proposta and rewrite them as clauses: el ple ha aprovat la proposta. Compare which version is clearer and whether the rewrite reveals an agent.
