Advanced Subordination in Catalan

Overview

At the C1 level, you command the full range of subordinate clause types in Catalan: concessive, purpose, result, cause, and their various conjunctions. Each type has specific conjunctions and may require the subjunctive or indicative depending on meaning and register. Mastering these patterns is essential for sophisticated written and spoken Catalan.

Advanced subordination involves choosing the right conjunction for the logical relationship you want to express and selecting the correct mood (indicative or subjunctive). Many of these conjunctions are register-sensitive, with more formal variants for written contexts and simpler ones for everyday speech.

This topic synthesizes several earlier grammar points — the subjunctive, tense agreement, and discourse structure — into a unified system of complex sentence construction.

How It Works

Examples in Context

Atès que no hi havia temps, es va ajornar. Given there was no time, it was postponed. Formal cause

Per bé que ho intentés, no ho va aconseguir. Although he tried, he didn't manage. Literary concessive
Com que és tard, hauríem de marxar. Since it's late, we should leave. Cause (sentence-initial)
Marxa abans que sigui massa tard. Leave before it's too late. Temporal + subjunctive

Common Mistakes

Using indicative after purpose conjunctions

  • Wrong: Ho va fer perquè tots ho entenen.
  • Right: Ho va fer perquè tots ho entenguessin.
  • Why: Purpose clauses (with perquè meaning "so that") require the subjunctive. Only causal perquè ("because") takes the indicative.

Confusing "perquè" (because) with "perquè" (so that)

  • Cause (indicative): No vinc perquè estic malalt. (I'm not coming because I'm sick.)
  • Purpose (subjunctive): Ho faig perquè ho entenguis. (I do it so that you understand.)
  • Why: The same word "perquè" serves both functions. The mood of the subordinate verb tells you which meaning is intended.

Using overly formal conjunctions in casual speech

  • Formal: Atès que no disposem de temps suficient...
  • Casual: Com que no tenim temps...
  • Why: Match the conjunction to the register. Reserve atès que, vist que, per bé que for formal contexts.

Usage Notes

Catalan subordination closely parallels French and Italian patterns, with the subjunctive triggered by purpose, concession, and temporal anteriority. Spanish speakers transitioning to Catalan will find the subjunctive triggers familiar but the conjunction inventory different. The richness of Catalan subordinating conjunctions is a feature of the language's literary tradition.

Practice Tips

  1. Write five sentences for each subordinate type (concessive, purpose, result, cause). Vary the conjunctions.
  2. Practice the subjunctive/indicative distinction with "perquè": create pairs where one means "because" and the other means "so that."
  3. Read opinion articles in Catalan newspapers and identify the subordinate clause types used. Note which conjunctions the author chooses.
